This might have been on before but I just seen a repeat of the fight on ITV4.
What does anyone think was in the mystery bottle.

His trainer panama lewis was a crook, in another fight he removed the padding from a pair of gloves for his fighter. His fighter smashed his opponents face to pieces. The oppponent was an irish fighter I think, he committed suicide some time later!

Billy Collins was the fighter that went to drink after the fight.

Arguello was always going to get a rematch, bottle incident or not - such a fight needed a 2nd one.

I cannot help but think Pryor's possibly enhanced performance also influenced the result of the rematch as Arguello took a battering at the end of their first fight.

Given that sport science knowledge wasn't anywhere near what it is now I doubt that they had anything that would have significantly improved his performance. Whatever it was could actually have hindered his performance (if memory serves I 'm pretty sure that some energy drinks for example cause a 'spiking' in blood sugar that causes the body to compensate by depressing the effect and actually depleting performance in the short term).

Spot on, this is just another 1 of boxings myths and excuses, who knows maybe there was something in the bottle but there wasnt really anything around them that was boosting his performance and it could have hindered his performance. Pryor was fighting the same fight all the way through, I think he turned up the pace when he saw Arguello hurt and went for broke like you're supposed to. It was an accumulation breakdown, Pryor used better movement, angles, defense and worked at a much faster pace. Pryor had the better speed/workrate and defense throughout the fight. In the rematch Pryor fought at a slower pace and didn't fight as defensively but put more into his shots scoring those early KDs, I think he just figured out he could take Arguello's shots so he was going to walk him down second time round.

Never bought into the bottle story. Pryor was, for me, one of the all-time great fighters. He's in my top 10. And at that stage of his career, at that weight, he's beating Arguello even if he's drinking MCDonald's milk shakes between rounds. The result of the rematch should be proof enough. Arguello fought his heart out in both fights but Pryor was the devil at 140. The greatest LW of them all.

Such a shame that Duran and Pryor missed each other by just a matter of about 3/4 years (or Duran and Arguello for that matter).
As good as the Hawk was, the prime Duran of 78/79 would have beaten him at LW, but what a war it would have been.

Pryor cried when Boom Boom lost to Bramble. He wanted the superfights and didn't get enough. Yes, there was the rematch with Arguello but Alexis was broken going into that one and other light-welters were pitiful (Mamby, Haley, Curry...), Leonard retired in 1982, Duran was up to light-middleweight, Hearns was up to light-middleweight, Benitez was up to light-middleweight...
Pryor made do with a clubfighter like Nicky Furlano and plenty of Robbie Fowler.
