I red it in the sun last week in the little article that fwank waren does.. it said matthew hall looks set to retire after a devastating stoppage defeat to anthony small! hall is only 24 and should bounce back from that defeat. I hope he doesn't retire he is an exciting fighter to watch but has been stopped twice now..should he retire?

There is no way he should retire, NO WAY. He wont have many opportunities where he comes from unless someone can give him a descent job. He is a good fighter but i feel he will end up getting into deep trouble without the descipline of boxing. The type of wanna be hard men he hangs about with like the Joyces and that kind are really no good for the lad. Keep boxing, you can come again.

He shouldnt retire

He should drop down a weight, find a trainer that can develop his jab and some straight punches and he will be fine

Hooking all the time can only work against certain opponents

he needs to learn a 'plan b' when hooking does not work for him.

Good news if he has moved trainers, he is very limited and though that can also reflect on the fighter, a good trainer would have drilled him into having at least some form of plan B.

Main thing for me though is he needs to drop a weight, he is so short and stocky, the more weight he can lose whilst retaining a good % of his core strength the better. I don't see why a guy who's what 5'3 or something with little stubby arms isnt fighting down at light-welter tbh.

Ive just looked on boxrec and it says 5'7 1/2. He looks much shorter than that, is that some sort of blag?!

5'7 is tiny for a light middleweight.

But Small is listed as 5'9 and looked tall compared to Small. I think Hall is defo more like 5'5, are all the heights on boxrec externally verified by the board or anything?

Hall, to me, looks about 5'7 or 5'8, but hey, that's just my opinion.

My mum has said for a number of years, she has a theory that all small men are '5 foot 7' when they get asked. It's like a 'can't be debated' middle ground for little men to quote as their height lol.

Hall looked really small. Should defo drop down weights.

Hall at best will have to aim for British when Small vacates. I think he'll struggle against anyone with a decent dig and right gameplan, his chin does like a hammering.

hall is always gonna be a good honest domestic level fighter.

he shouldn't pack it in.

all that talk of world titles after what he did to bradley pryce was way off base mind.

He'd fit in well in the Paras - would win his milling bout on P Company no probs at all!

Hall will carry on. A change of trainer but he will carry on for sure. Still has a big future in my eyes.

I am just re-reading Bob Lonkhurst's book about Tommy Farr - which is well worth buying by the way - and if he had quit after a couple of defeats, he would never have gone on to become one of this country's best ever heavyweights. He gave a prime Joe Louis one of his hardest nights. By that time, Boxrec shows he had lost seven and drawn three. But he also lost many others as a young lad fighting for small change in the little halls up in the valleys, and he was beaten while fighting in Joe Gells' travelling booth on several occasions. I know times have changed, but not so much that a lad cannot come back from a loss and become a better fighter. What surprised me against Small was the Matthew appeared to lose heart. Look what Bradley Pryce did to Small, but Small regrouped and thought it out, had a change of trainers and demonstrably came back as a harder and tougher man.
Matthew will know if he really wants to go on. But my advice would be to take the defeat and the harsh words of your supposed friends, who probably melted away as soon as Small's arm was raised, and use it as motivation to fight on and improve. If he is reading this, I hope he can see that there is no shame in defeat, and that it is more about how you cope with it.

It wouldn't be a great surprise to see Hall box on under another promotor.

As a ticket seller, I'm sure there will be work for him.
