‘The Man' wants Joy
By GABRIEL SINGH
Thursday, July 30, 2009
RUGBY league star turned world boxing champion Anthony "The Man" Mundine wants to defend his International Boxing organisation middleweight title against Joy "The Jet" Ali here.
Mundine's trainer, George Reno, the man who brought knockout king Daniel Baff here, is keen to have two world title fights in Fiji.
Mundine, 34, born in the inner Sydney suburb of Newtown, first earned recognition in rugby league with the Dragons and then the Broncos.
He won a grand final with the Brisbane side in 1997 and played for the Blues in the 1999 State of Origin series.
But a year a later, he quit the sport in a cloud of controversy, claiming racism hampered his career to follow his father, Tony Senior, one of the biggest names of Australasia in the 1970s, into boxing.
The brash, outspoken young Mundine, today known in the ring as 'The Man', went for his first world title in 2001 after only 10 professional fights but was knocked cold in the tenth by IBF supermiddleweight champion Sven Ottke.
But since then he has risen to the top of the world, outpointing Daniel Geale in May last year to take the crown he now wants to defend against Fiji's top drawcard, Ali, in Suva.
That mouth-watering showdown is being lined-up for October, with a second world title possibility in December.
Details of the programs will be lodged for approval with the Fiji Boxing Commission this week, truly putting Fiji back on the world boxing map once more.

Especially as Ali's last opponents had a total of 9 fights between them at the time. Ali only last 6 rounds against Crazy Kim, who put Mundine down on his Khyber.
An easy money fight for Mundine if it ever eventuates.

Let's not be so harsh on the Man here boys and girls. This Ali is #1 in Fiji. Mundine is #1 in Australia. He's fighting the right level of competition, Ali must be good if he's #1 in his home country. See, the Man is improving and fighting higher calibre of opponents. in fact, there's a good chance Mundine could lose this fight, it's going to be tough.
Let's not forget Pavlik is ducking him.

what so he should fight the number 1 in laos? or the number 1 in kazakhstan?
your reasoning is bs...pavlik wont fight him coz mundine is too hard to do business with. he wants everything his way all the time.

I'd say there was a tongue firmly planted in the cheek when the post was made
p.s. Mundine would have been beaten by former Fijian #1 Sakaria Ve had their paths crossed in their primes

Do they have middleweights in Laos? The Kazakh may be a tough match.
The no 1 Kazakhstani middleweight is 27 year old Gennady Golovkin, rated 12 in the world by Boxrec. A silver medalist at the Athens Olympics, based in Hamburg, Germany he is 17-0 with 14 KOs. Unfortunately there are no active Laotian pro-boxers listed at any weight.

This Ali character would be a good matchup for one of our up and comers, I'm thinking Bolling.

F!@#!ing hell noooooooooooooooo
FIJI’S Joy ‘The Jet’ Ali has accepted the challenge to fight former two-time World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight champion and current International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Middleweight champion Anthony Mundine in Fiji.
The indigenous Australian boxer is prepared to put on line his title against Ali.
The fight is expected to take place sometime in December this year.
Top promoter Abdul Feroz said they were ready to host Mundine in Fiji.
Feroz said they were awaiting more details from the Mundine camp.
When contacted yesterday, Ali said it had been his dream to feature in a world title fight since taking boxing seriously
He said he had been training hard from the beginning of the season and was hoping for such an offer to come forward.
“If this programme really eventuates, then it will be good for me and Fiji,” the undefeated champion local boxer said.
“This will be the first ever world title fight in Fiji and with Mundine fighting here there will be lots of media coverage promoting our country to the world.”
Ali had fought Argentinean Javier Alberto Mamani for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin title in 2007.
“We have the Fedelatin and then the major one is the world title. We are all hoping the deal gets through and the Joy-Mundine fight takes place here,” said Feroz.
“The Mundine camp will be visiting us in two weeks time where we will hold further talks. At the moment we are corresponding through email.”
Meanwhile, the Fiji Boxing Commission has called for an urgent meeting at 10am today in Korotogo, Sigatoka.
According to close sources, all promoters and boxers have been required to attend

How is this guy a role model for aboriginals, I mean it's great that you don't smoke and drink, but what about being a compulsive liar and ripping hard working Australians off.

He is as genuine as a professional wrestler. In fact not quite as genuine.
The funny thing is, he takes offence at things that are written against him. Calling critics haters and not being able to see how great he is. It is sad really.

More #1 MW's that will give Mundine the competition he wants:
Algeria - Amar Amari 14-12-1
Brazil - John Anderson Carvalho 19-4-1
(Aussie favourite) - Argentina - Claudio Ariel Abalos 20-10-3
China - Li Jia Jun 3-0-0
Nigeria - Inka Laleye 3-1-2
Romania - Mihai Macovei 7-5-0
Syria - Baker Barakat 5-5-3
Mexico - David Lopez 38-12-0
Latvia - Olegs Fedotovs 10-6-0
I'm deadly serious about this too adam.

Mouth-watering? In the sense that a really sour fruit can get the saliva ducts working, maybe.
Anyway, I don't see this happening. Just a bit of newspaper filler from a smaller country. These things are quite common in regional journalism. Like a local rag I once worked for once had the front page "POSH AND BECKS TO HOLIDAY IN N. WALES?". Note the question mark - it was purely speculation, and of course they didn't.
