Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
Everything that I have heard is that it will be held every other year, I think at the Ringside Tournament like 2008 and 2006.

Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
can u be 19 at the time of the tourn?
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
No. The rule is either you can't be 19 till after the Under 19 World Tourney or it is you can't be 19 till Jan 1 the next year. So the boxers boxing in 2010 will all have to be turning 19 in 2011 or later from what I believe.big ed wrote:can u be 19 at the time of the tourn?
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
my kid wont be 19 until oct of this year, so i guess he cant compete?
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
Under-19 tournment includes boxers from age 16 (depending on the tournament entry date) up to age 18. It does not include 19 year olds.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
You can compete in Youth tournaments in 2009 if you were born in 1991 or 1992,in 2010 it becomes 1992 and 1993,
For junior tournaments in 2009 it is 1993 and 1994.next year it is 1994 and 1995.

Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
USA Boxing would send a team to the '10 World Youth Championships and try and qualify boxers for the Olympic Youth Games which is a new concept of basically having a U-19 Olympics for all Olympic sports but on a smaller scale I believe.Hasim Rahman Jr wrote:Is America participating in any of these events..?mike222 wrote:I know of these

Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
how will they determine the rankings this year then
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
From what I have heard, the boxers will have to be 19 to compete in the regular Olympics. If not, then they can not compete in them but can in the Olympic Youth Games. I have not seen any official notice about this, but I have heard it from several reputable sources.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
I have been notified that the US did not get permission to have men's boxing represented in the Youth Olympics. I am trying to get more clarification on why that is.Dennis wrote:From what I have heard, the boxers will have to be 19 to compete in the regular Olympics. Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
It was definitely cost cutting. They started in 2006 with combining the U-19 with the Ringside Tourney. USAB didn't have the money to host the tourney so John Brown suggested they have it in conjunction with his Ringside Tourney. USAB really didn't have any other options and did it. It saved USAB lots of money and they have done it that way since. USAB also decided to only host it when there was a World U-19 tourney (every other year).
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
The U-19 has been the step child of USAB for many years. Until the World tournament was organized, the U-19 really had no relevance - its champions didn't go any where and the tournament isn't part of the rankings. For many years various USAB members tried to have it made part of the JO National Championships rather than separate.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
They could just add it to the list of tournaments that will compete together - USA Senior Men's, USA Senior Women's, USA J.O.'s - boys and girls, and USA U-19. The only problem would be that boxers 17-18 would have to decide whether to compete in the U-19 or in the Senior's unless AIBA is changing the rule and requiring boxers to be 19 to compete in the Worlds and Olympics. The USA would not have won their one and only medal this year as it was 17 year-old Frankie Gomex who won it at the World's.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
If this were to be the case, my best guess is that the U-19 would die. The U-19 is NOT a ranking tournament nor does it lead to much other than the World championships when they are held. If AIBA decided to include the 19 years olds, it would no longer by "U-19."The only problem would be that boxers 17-18 would have to decide whether to compete in the U-19 or in the Senior's
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
Mel - they aren't talking about including 19 year olds in the U-19. The story I heard has AIBA requiring boxers to be at least 19 to compete in the Worlds and Olympics. That would make the U-19 class more legit since those boxers wouldn't have a choice. As far as I know it is still a rumor, but I have heard it from a number of different people.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
Dennis - I was answering anothers speculation, not saying that 19 year olds would be included in the U-19.
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
I don't think that the U-19 tourney, or lack thereof, has anything to do with it. The 17-18 year old boxers usually have competed in both tournaments. The reason for the youth at the Olympic Trials has more to do with boxers turning pro or leaving our sport too young. We don't have enough boxers who stick around until their mid 20's. Too many people think that boxers have to be pro by the time they are 21 or 22. Are they nuts? Many boxers aren't mature enough yet to handle it. I hope that some success by older boxers turning pro such as some of the recent Cubans and Eastern Europeans will show that a 25 year old can turn pro and do great (and even 27-28 year olds).
Re: Is there U-19 tournament this year?
The U-19 championships has been the step-child of USAB for years. It was thought, at inception, that the event would be a bridge between the JOs and the open division. It has never been attended well as entrants have to pay their own way and, until AIBA started the U-19 Worlds, there was no real incentive in becoming a U-19 champion. During the 90s, there were several attempts made to include that age group in with the JOs or eliminate the tournament completely. The tournament stayed part of USAB events until the lack of monies almost caused its demise. That's when John Brown stepped in and included the tournament in the Ringside annual event. The "increased number of 17-18 year olds" had nothing to do with the elimination of the U-19. The decreased funds of USAB did. At this point it appears to be nothing more than the selection process for a U-19 Worlds team every other year.i sure dont & it doesnt seem to be a stretch to conclude that the increased number of 17-18 year-olds in "open' (all ages) national competitions has at least something to do with the elimination of national U-19 championships that year...
