I only realised he died when I saw his obituary in the paper this morning. Where has this news been? I recently read his ‘Ringside’ anthology. It is absolutely superb. What a writer, and what a life he lived.

I can't believe I missed this. I read and watch a lot of media too which makes it worse.

RIP Budd.

Me too. I find the lack of comment and tribute in the boxing press in particular very strange.

Wrote one of my favourite books, "what makes Sammy run" as well of course as the screenplay for on the waterfront.

no doubt the superlatives will pour in. a lot of ppl would criticise his part in informing on commies during the mccarthy witch hunt hysteria, especially with him being a former communist party member. no doubt a lot of pressure was put on him, etc. also, his screenplay for on the waterfront potrayed unions as corrupt and criminal. maybe he had a point, maybe he was deliberately making anti-left propaganda, maybe he took this approach due to pressure exerted on him.

ON THE WATERFRONT is great. his dialogue and brando's wonderfully inarticulate performance go together well. obviously schulberg wrote the film, and had nothing to do with casting, directing or anything like that.

I prefer 'The Harder they fall' . but both books/films are excellent.
