Enzo Maccarenellis career looks in ruins now after being knocked out or stopped in 3 of his last 4 fights.

The fight that really damaged him and began the downward slide was the March 2008 showdown at the 02 arena London, England against David Haye.

The fight was announced.

WBC & WBA Champion - David Haye.

WBO Champion - Enzo Maccarenelli.

Billed as the "two best crusierweights in the world"

Haye seemed clam and relaxed in the build up.

Enzo seemed confident and stated how he had waited for this fight for so long and that he was going to punch a hole in Hayes head.

However

On fight night

Enzo ran to the ring in fear.

Fought on the back foot.

Shipped heavy right hands.

Was mauled with a barrage of punches and floored.

Stumbled across the ring and told the ref "I'm alright"

Then made a feeble attempt to get his hands up at the referees request.

Was he put of his depth do you feel?

I picked Enzo to win the fight.

But in hindsight he was probaly only British / European level fighter.

At best he had two fringe world class wins against former WBC Crusierweight Champions in

Dominguez and Braitwaite - but they were both faded fighters when Enzo fought them.

Maybe Enzo found his level the night he had a great scrap with British / Commonwealth Champion Mark Hobson.

But since then he had joined Camp Calzaghe and seemed to make great improvement.

However the hype was maybe too much.

He had bad flaws like jerking his chin up in the air, etc - which Haye took advatnage of.

The main issue is

DO you feel that Maccarenellis - confidence and career was ruined - by throwing him in too deep against David Haye.

Should he have been better proctected by allegedly.

Bobby Gunn fights are a joke.

But I think David Haye was a leap too far.

If he had been better protected he could have continued to defend his WBO belt and maybe fought for the European title, etc.

I just feel his career was ruined by throwing him in too deep against Haye.

This is a refelction on his career now it appears to be in ruins and looks over.

The lesson learnt is maybe not throwing fighters in too deep

Because a loss like that seemed to ruin the rest of his career

In a simliar way - but maybe not so bad - I feel Fernardo Vargas career was heavily damaged by throwing him in too soon against Felix Trinidad.

Haye isn't all that by a long chalk. He's a massive hitter though, bigger than Enzo. I was on Enzo to win over 12. I like Haye's approach to fighting the best but I don't think he's owt special. Gets hit too easily for a start.

I thought it was Showtime, not HBO?

It was a big mistake throwing him in against Haye, whether it was overconfidence from training with Enzo Calzaghe or the false impression that Haye would be too weight drained.

If they had avoided that fight he could have had a decent career defending that WBO belt against soft opponents. The Enzo Calzaghe / Warren fallout doesn't seem to have helped though, so maybe he would have always been struggling to get good fights after that.

If you dont think he isn't owt special then there is something up with you mentally, he is a very talented boxer and world-class fighter. Flint go back to the rock you crawled from under and stop this obsession with Enzo.

no he made a reference to a mistake in the week of the fight - but has never revealed what it was

and also he said he made a mistake in the ring by dropping his hands and putting his chin up in the air and Haye nailed him

I said Haye outclassed Enzo

And asked if people agree with me that the Haye loss ruined Enzo's confidence and ruined the rest of his career

This is a real question................

In hindsight over the course of time its become clear that Enzo was just not in Hayes class...................

How was fighting Haye a mistake?

Maccarenelli wanted to be the best at his chosen sport. In his weight division. He would have been ranked #1 cruiserweight if he beat Haye.

The guy tried to become the best cruiserweight in the world, but he failed. Why go into any sport and not try to become the best you can be?

Enzo wasn't good enough. He wont be remembered in 100 years time. All respect where it's due. The guy tried and it didn't work out for him. Maybe he can become a great trainer? Something he couldn't do as a boxer.

Enzo deserves the respect of being a raw fighter who was willing to step in the ring with the Hayemaker

He got guts and heart

Its just in hindsight it looks like that fight ruined him - at least mentally

He took the chance - but he was found he was not on that level - but he was unable to bounce back

That means the fight damaged him long term - rather than be a learning experience

What people forget was that he was cruising against Afolabi, until he ran of of steam and then was easily picked off by a bomb.
