Jones stops Lacy in 10 rounds
BILOXI, Miss. - Roy Jones Jr. toyed with Jeff Lacy for the first four rounds and then punished him for six more before Lacy's corner mercifully stopped the bout after the 10th round Saturday night. Jones scored a TKO victory in the light-heavyweight match before a sparse crowd at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Lacy (25-3, 17 KOs) didn't provide enough of a challenge to test Jones, so how much mileage the 40-year-old former undisputed 175-pound champion actually will get from the match is questionable. For Lacy, a former super middleweight champion, this was probably the end of the road.
"I kept telling you that all I needed was a tuneup," Jones said. "I'm still the man."
There was a long delay before Jones and Lacy stepped into the ring because Lacy didn't want to wear the brand of gloves that both fighters had agreed on the day before. The stalling tactic did nothing to throw Jones off his game. He said Lacy could wear whatever brand he wanted as long as he went through with the fight.
Once they were in the thick of the fight, it hardly mattered what type of gloves they were wearing. You could barely see Jones' hands, which are just as blazing fast as they were a decade ago. And Lacy spent much of the first couple of rounds with his head buried in Jones' chest and his fist desperately trying to dig into Jones body. Jones seemed content to fight with his back on the ropes, firing off when it seemed convenient.
Jones (54-5, 40 KOs) opened a small cut underneath Lacy's right eye in the third round. But it didn't appear to be problematic. The bigger problem for Lacy was how to slow Jones down long enough to land his shots. It seemed a futile effort as Jones mugged to the crowd, pointed at his friends in the audience, wiggled his hips and clowned in front of Lacy, all the while landing potshots at will.
Jones was just showing off when he twice landed a triple left hook to Lacy's chin and followed it up near the end of the round with a 12-punch combination. Lacy had no answers for that kind of speed. At times it looked like nothing more than a glorified sparring session for Jones.
By the ninth round, both of Lacy's eyes were badly swollen from the number of punches that Jones had landed, most of them in rapid succession. Lacy's left eye was just a slit in the 10th round and his corner didn't even have an endswell to help reduce the swelling.
"I came here and I fought my heart out," Lacy said. "I'm a warrior. He was the better man tonight."
On the undercard, Aussie Danny Green (27-3, 24 KOs) stopped Julio Cesar Dominguez at 2:53 of the fifth round to take the IBO cruiserweight title. Green blasted Dominguez, knocking him down three times in the fight, twice in the fifth round. The last one forced referee Freddie Steinwinder III to call a halt to it. Green was hoping to lure Jones to Australia for a fight in November. Cruiserweight contender B.J. Flores (24-0-1, 15 KOs) dominated an overmatched Epifanio Mendoza (29-8-1, 25 KOs), stopping him by TKO at 1:19 of the fourth round. Mendoza appeared to injure his left shoulder early in the round before his corner stepped into the ring to stop it.

Lacy retired... Jones didnt KO him.
I've seen him far more bust up than that, so obviously he realises nowadays that if your pay cheque is safe in the locker room... why hang about when your losing?

Calzaghe wrecked Lacy - You don't recover from beat downs like that, and his form post Calzaghe proves it.

No, Lacy was always shite. Before the Calzaghe fight he scraped a 115-113 win over Omar Shieka. If he had fought Roy back then, he would have gotten treated the same way. He is just not that good, overhyped to the extreme.

Lacy has barely won a round against Taylor, Calzaghe and now Jones.
He has always fell short of being world class.
People like Sakio Bika have achieved way more in the sport than Lacy.. and he's just a brawler too.

He has wins against the likes of Robin Reid, Vanderpool etc?

But thats all just hype
His next fight after Lacy - Sakio Bika - was a much tougher fighter - who gave him a much tougher fight.

Some of you guys here should stop stating the obvious about how bad LACY was!
So what.....that was a GREAT PERFORMANCE...you could even say Poetic...watching RJJ do his thing even at probably only 50% or less of his former is still better than pretty much any Boxer out there!
Loved every minute of that Fight...No one Fights with his Style, Swagger, Technique, Skill and Comedy.
Ok maybe he should stay away from A level Light Heavy Fighters like Chad Dawson and maybe Jean Pascal but i'm pretty sure he still has enough to beat Clinton Woods, Zolt Erdei and Gabriel Campillo and hey i'd even love RJJ vs BHOPS 2 next Year :)

I rate Jean Pascal as a real soild fighter - I was a fan after his fight with Froch.
I would love to see Roy fight him.
I agree - its great to see Roy fight with his swagger and style.
He hasnt got that youthful edge anymore - but he is still a brilliant fighter.

I remeber back in about 2007 Enzo Maccarenelli said he wanted to fight Roy Jones down the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.
However even today a good couple of years on - Roy would have too much class for Enzo.

I can't believe that some people were actually picking Lacy to KO Jones in this one

I think this just shows how good Joe was because he beat both of these easy.
After the Jones Jnr fight people were and still are saying that Jones Jnr's career was finished, well he's still beating the crap out of good or highly rated fighters and then when you think of Hopkins being classed as one of the best pound 4 pound oh and Joe beat him to, funny that.
It's just funny that people how much people bang on about Joe not being as good as people think.
One answer is that Joe beat everone he had to and in doing that beat some all time greats. This makes Joe the best British boxer over the last 10 years and in the top 10 boxers in the world in the last 10 years. People don't like that but the facts are there and I'm not even Welsh!

I don't think he beat Jones that easily, also he didn't beat everyone he had to beat (Sven Ottke, RJJ, BHop before they got old) I'd make Lennox lewis best boxer of the last 10 years.
This win sounds good (does anyone have a stream) but I still worry that he shouldn't be taking many more hits to the head because he could end up getting hurt. Particularly someone who has given us such good nights in the past.

Lacy was never that good from the start. Losing to Calzaghe didn't suddenly make him a bad fighter, he was always bad. As I said, 115-113 against Shieka... he barely got by Omar Shieka for christs sakes.

Pacal would have too much for Jones at this stage of their careers. I can't see Roy taking that fight to be honest. Pascal was strong at SMW but appears even stronger at LHW! I can't see Pascal boxing at 168lbs again!
If Froch fought Pascal at LHW I think its a 50-50 fight!
In respect of Jones, I'd like to see Hopkins-Jones 2, but again, I can't see Roy having it! Despite yesterday's solid showing & the surprising ease with which Jones won, I still maintain Hopkins would be too good for Jones now!
Credit to Roy though. He has suffered some bad defeats but insisted on boxing on!

id love to see a rematch, and now jones cannot call the shots financially perhaps it can actually be made.

Even today? Two years on?
Thats an odd comment, given Maccarinelli's plummet.
Two years ago it was a maybe, now .... never.

OK, I admit it, Lacy was a great fighter and one of the best in the sport. Calzaghe showed his greatness by beating a really great fighter in Lacy. Taylor and Roy and lucky Calzaghe beat Lacy because Lacy would have been the next Mike Tyson if Calzaghe didn't. Lacy would have beaten everyone and went up to heavyweight and beaten both Klitschkos.
It doesn't matter that he struggled to a 115-113 win over Omar Shieka, he was still great.

He was good but no way was he great.
He was hyped to hell by the yanks though, I remember a couple of US marines telling me how Lacy would smash Calzaghe, Hopkins and Tarver.
They laughed when I said Joe would win a wide decision.

Lacy was alright but barely had 20 fights. That's crazy to think he was one of Calzaghes toughest opponents! The Lacy fight was arguably his best performance but you have to bear in mind Lacy's lack of experience and limitations. Although Kessler is still somewhat unproven at the highest level that was a good victory.
Eubank and Hopkins were his standout wins for me.
