As far as I know they have only previously shown Box office in HD. The schedule seems to suggest even regular FFN will be HD in future.

What IS the score with all this High Definition malarky

I've never quite understood it, I've got a Sony Bravia HD tv, but do I need an extra box to get the high definition?? Because the HD channels I have on VirginMedia look the same as all the other bog-standard ones

No Stu, FFN has never been broadcast in HD. It is shown on the HD channels but this is because they show everything shown on the ‘normal’ channels, but only selected programmes (ie live footy, rugby, cricket) are actually in HD. To use industry jargon normal Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD1 are ‘simulcast’ together.

To make things even more confusing, even watching standard definition on the HD channel will be clearer than ‘normal’ because the HD channel will ‘upscale’ the pictures. This will be nowhere near as sharp as HD though.

Thepatrriot, yes even though you have a ‘HR ready’ TV (as nearly everyone probably does these days), it won’t show HD pictures unless it is using a HD source, like Sky + HD. I can’t stand Sky as a company but the HD output on Sky Sports is stunning.

Re Virgin Media, they only have a few HD channels, and most of them will not be broadcasting in HD most of the time (ie they are simulcast too). If you have ESPN watch tonight’s game on the ESPN HD channel and you will notice a big difference.

It isn’t surprising that there is so much confusion around HD as for a long time it has suited a lot of parties (eg TV manufacturers, elec retailers, even Sky and Virgin themselves). It is only now that Sky has much more HD content (and a genuine competitor in Virgin) that they are trying to clarify things with their recent HD ad campaign.

I think there is an element of the Emporers new clothes about it but it does look very very clear. It's more important for football as there are so many little characters moving around the screen.

For boxing it is good for spotting strange things in the crowd, like for example Barerra's reaction to Floyd Ko'ing Hatton.

Forget about the format - get the bloody fights right as the priority.
Who care whether some of the crap served up on Fridays is in HD or whatever.

Georgie Thompson always says - "watch Munroe vs Martinez 2 on Sky Sports 1 and HD 1".

So I assumed it was in HD.... but does isn't this all the weblink is saying... it will be on HD 1 and HD2, but doesn't say it will be on HD.

Your right it's not 1080p - its 1080i

Basically 'p' stands for progressively, in laymen terms the rows of pixels update at the same time.

Wheras 'i' you have 540 rows of pixels running from the top to the bottom of the screen, with the odd fields displayed first and the even fields displayed second (540 odd 540 even = 1080 pixels).

When it is done progressively, the picture does not suffer jagged edges, flutter or motion artefacts.

On higher end TVs, the technology in them actually takes a standard HD transmission and improves it to 'p'.

Nowadays most high-end tv's are 1080p/60 which means the same frame repeated twice every 30th of a second, making the picture extremely smooth.

Trust me, when you see a 32" panasonic HD for £500 and then another 32" panasonic for £800 your basically paying for the video processing technology.

A lot of folk set their TV-setup to 720p50 as it has twice the temporal resolution of 1080i50 and can handle sport / fast action better.

It gets really techy the more you go into it. I'd just not even think about it - if it looks alright, it looks alright.

As far as HD goes I will sign up for it once it is available at the same price as the standard transmition.

As someone else said it has a feel of Emperor's new clothes for me, esp where boxing broadcasts are concerned. I have watched football in HD and downloaded some fights in HD and whilst it is impressive enough it just ins't worth the associated costs IMO at the moment.

No it is definitely indicating that it will be broadcast in HD, otherwise (as with last 'season') it would just refer to SS1. You get used to these subtle and painful differences when you start looking out for HD content!

Cool.... perhaps you can answer me this question. If you record a HD programe (on DVD) with a HD ready DVD recorder.... but you play the DVD back on non HD equipment (DVD player or TV) - whats the pic like? Can you actually watch it.

I love me HD (Hard Drive)/DVD recorder.... but recently found out it will not record in High Definition, will be gutted when it is surplus to requirements... but I won't be going HD for a while.

HD suck my prat. It's drip fed bollox that they probably had ready six years ago and sold you 3 different products in the mean time.

I would rather have watched Muhammad Ali in black and white on a 12 inch screen with no sound that Klit vs. Haye on a 70 inch chav TV HD BMX load of bollox,

and for that reason.....I'm out.

The difference is huge, I find. Especially with sport and nature docs.

Still not enough of a reason to resubscribe to sky sports though, a pig in silk is a pig nonetheless.

Anyone wantying to see what boxing is like in HD. Go to you tube typw in castillo corrales HD - round 9 of their fight is on there in HD. 99% of home PCs / laptops will play HD, and I think you'll see the difference in picture quality compared to your normal boxing / TV.

Seriously, during Froch v Taylor i could read Rob McCracken's pass hanging round his neck whilst he was bollocking Froch.

These are heavily compressed screenshots, yet some could pass for photo's.

When Haye lifted his titles, you could see the fingerprints on it.

HD is far far superior to normal tv, watch the football on sky sports 1 then switch to sky sports 1 HD and you can see a clear difference.

However i had virgin media before and most of the channels are really poor quality and the HD ones just look like the normal channels on freeview or sky on a 40 inch tv.

watch an old film in HD and you can distinguish the make up the actor's wearing from the skin tones. sometimes you can see too much.
