Duddy fighting on 10/10, Rules out Lee fight?

It was confirmed today that John Duddy will fight against a TBA on October the 10th at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of Juanma Lopez's WBO Super Bantanweight defense. The announcement of this fight rules out the possibility of Duddy vs Lee this year. It will be interesting to see who Duddy fghts and whether it will be at Middleweight or Light-Middleweight. Would be good to see him fighting a Top 20 Ranked Fighter although knowing Duddy it will be a journeyman again although now that he has lost his perfect record maybe there is pressure off him to keep it and now he can let loose on a few decent middleweights!!

He needs to step the level up I think a fight with Craig McEwan would be good McEwan is a good boxer and Duddy is tough I think McEwen would outpoint him at the highest level Duddy comes up wanting but he can be a decent British level and Euro fighter imo

i think Manfredo is a great shout, he is well respected in boxing, in the top 20 and has been in with a few decent ones-Calzaghe, Lacy, Mora etc. It would be a cracker of a fight but I have to say I would slightly fancy Duddy to nick it on points.

I dont think he would fight for an British or Commonwealth fight.

I agree with Horse - he should avenge the defeat to Billy Lyell. Something inside me always like to see defeats avenged before a fighter progresses. But I heard that Lyell signed up to fight a decent profile fighter on the back of his win - however, I can see anything on BoxRec.

You're right Sligo, somehow I can't see "Irish" John Duddy fighting for the British or Commonwealth title.I don't think that would go please his legion of Irish-American fans

exactly my point - thankfully most Irish based fans (and fighters) are sophisticated enough to understand that sometimes a fighter needs to fight for a Commonwealth or British title in order to advance their career and open opportunities regards of political, ethnic or religious .

However, I think many of those in "Irish America" are still pretty polarised and have a more simplistic view and it would stick in their throat if he did - after all many of those St Patricks Day cards were like a mini Provofest.

Anyway, I'm off to find me shillelagh!

Yea it was his uncle also called John Duddy who was killed on Bloody Sunday. He will never fight for the British/Commonwealth title. Dont think he has even fought for the Irish title either!

I've said it before and I still believe that Duddy needs to fight some people with a bit of substance. If he doesn't want to fight for British and Commonwealth titles then I respect his decision but just because he has chosen to avoid those belts it doesn't mean he is necessarily above that level. Are Lyell, Vanda, Smichet etc. Anything majorly above domestic level? I wouldn't think so.

Similarly with the European title. Having been based predominently in America then he would surely have to relocate to the European zone and get a couple of ranked wins under his belt before he could fight the European title, rather than just walking into a straight crack based on his exciting style and crowd pulling power.

A fair assessment there Steve.

I hear that he is to fought Michi Munoz in the 10th - this is a guy that the New York commision knocked back last time the two were to be paired in February 2008.

Finally, congratulations to John who is gettin married in Derry this weekend.
I would

these guys never seem to fight anyone interesting.

same with dunne until the cordoba fight.

makes you wish there was someone like steve collins around today - collins, who fought reggie johnson, mike mccallum, sumbu kalambay, before he won his title and took on the likes of Eubank and Benn.

I suggest that Dunne's level of opposition has consisted of sterner tests than Duddy's. He did beat Pickering for the Euro and fought Martinez...okay we all know what happened there. When he came back he met Machado who was a has-been but at least he had been decent at some point.

Faccio had been in with Hesegawa and was a replacement for the dangerous Garica who pulled out with a cut.

What I am saying it that while Dunne's opposition was not exactly stellar it was better than Duddy's has been so far.

Munoz looks like a Duddy opponent anyway. Boxrec ranks him 226 in the world but at least he is Mexicos 17th best ranked middleweight, only fighter of any substance hes fought is Martiroysan where he got knocked out cold inside 3!! Come on Duddy sort it out fella.
