Some news from the Irish Squad at the worlds Championship.

Earlier today, Cavan bantamweight John Joe Nevin recorded a classy 19-4 preliminary round victory over Ramir Najafou of Azerbaijan.
Nevin, who forced Najafov into a standing count in the third, was in cruise control from the opening bell up and will meet Serbian, Nikola Magovac on Saturday

O'Neill, who boxes out of the Paulstown club in Kilkenny, was 21-0 up when the third man in the ring called a halt to proceedings 34 seconds into the frame.
It was a comprehensive victory for the 23 year old European Union champion and ex Kilkenny youth hurler, who forced Shilpakar into two standing counts in the first round.

Eric Donovan sealed Ireland's third win in a row at the AIBA World Senior Championships at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan tonight following a controlled 13-4 victory over Dakhodir Karimov of Tajikistan.
The St Michael's Athy lightweight advanced to meet India's Jai Bhagwan - in a repeat of this summers Ahmet Cup clash in Istanbul, Turkey which Donovan won 5-2 - following this evenings verdict.

Some news on the English Squad :

At 54kg Luke Campbellbeat Rey Vargas of Mexico. Luke was cruising to victory in the first round, leading 8-2 on points. In the second, however, the Hull boxer conceded 4 points after two warnings, and the Mexican managed to close the gap to 14-10, but the current European Champion kept his cool and ended the bout 17-13 up.



Also at 54kg, Welsh boxer Andrew Selby was due to box Berlin Arthur Mbenga of the Central African Federation at midday. A no-show by his opponent led to a wakover for Andrew, who will now box either Viet Quoc Tran (VIE) or Detelin Dalakliev, the Bulgarian silver medallist from last year's European Championships in Liverpool.



60kg Liverpudlian Tom Stalker boxes Joegin Ladon of the Philippines. Tom will then face either Vilasack Khuandy (LAO) or Carlos David Arce (ISV) in Friday. Tom boxes tonight at around 9.45pm

Think he looked a bit nervous and tentative but a win is a win. Hopefully he can settle next fight and throw the jab more.

looks like if Stalker wins today he will fight the world number 2 Armenian Harachik Javakyhan next

Will be a tough one then, fingers crossed.

The scoring staggers me. Just watched two light-welters, a Moroccan against a Serb; missed the first round which the Moroccan won 2-0, but watched the second and third rounds were the Serb did all the work and countless times he snapped the head back of the Moroccan. Low and behold, the Moroccan won 10-2...

Yesterday Irish boxers Results :

David Oliver Joyce recorded an emphatic 28 -3 victory over Thai featherweight Wuttichai Masuk at the 15th AIBA World Senior Championships in Milan this afternoon..
Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy club, was on top from the start and forced Masuk into standing counts in the second and third rounds.
Joyce, the reigning European Union champion, will now meet Mexico's Oscar Valdez in the last 32 next Sunday morning.

Earlier today, Donegal welterweight Willie McLaughlin recorded Ireland's fourth win in a row at the Mediolanum Forum after earning an inside the distance victory over Come Ndyishmiye of Burundi.
McLaughlin was 6-0 up when the ref halted the contest in the first round after Ndyishmiye took his second standing count.
McLaughlin will face Vedic Velibor of Bosnia & Herzegovina on Sunday.

Nine Irish boxers are now through to the last 32 phase.

Irish flyweight Declan Geraghty became the first Irish boxer to advance to the last 16 of the AIBA World Championshipsfollowing an 11-9 win over Macedonian, Mumin Veli this morning.
But Irish captain Eric Donovan bowed out after he was beaten 11-6 by Indian lightweight Jai Bhagwan despite winning the first round by a three point margin.

Nineteen year old Geraghty, the youngest member of the Irish squad, was involved in a see-saw 51Kg battle with Veli at the Mediolanum Forum.
The Dublin Docklands club-man was 3-0 up at the end of the first round and appeared to be cruising.
But Veli turned things around in the second to edge the frame 8-7 - despite conceding two points after receiving a public warning for dropping his head,
However, Geraghty pulled out all the stops in the third and final round, scoring fours points en route to victory.

Meanwhile, Donovan, from the St Michael's Athy club, was 4-1 up at the end of the first round and 5-3 ahead at the end of the second.
But Bhagwan tightened up his defense considerably in the final stanza and also managed to score eight points - most of the scores arriving in the final 40 seconds.

There are no more Irish boxers in action today.
Beijing Olympians Paddy Barnes and John Joe Nevin and European Union champion Darren O'Neill will be in action tomorrow.

England's battle for glory in Milan commenced this week, in the preliminaries of the AIBA World Boxing Championships.

Today's (Friday's) boxing

Khalid Yafai's Turkish opponent Erdal Inanli might have scored the first point of the bout, but it was the Birmingham boxer who dominated this preliminary contest from start to finish. The bout ended 13-3 in Yafai's favour.



At 60kg a controlled and stylish Tom Stalker showed his class against Vilasack Khuandy of Laos, winning 13-3


Yesterday's results

Scotland's heavyweight Stephen Simmons continued the team's good fortune with a 13-3 win over Kenyan Elly Ajowi. After a good first round the Kenyan took two standing counts. Stephen, perhaps looking for a killer blow in the next two, couldn't find it. Still this a was a comfortable win for the Scotsman who will now face Australian Mostyn Niemann.

He'll be facing the Brazilian Everton Lopes in the last 16. He beat the Armenien 11:1.

Pretty good draw for the English team.

Luke Campbell just got eliminated 11-9 by a Mongolian. He was boxing well and used his height and speed to outbox his stocky opponent for the most part. He was up by three in the last round but committed some type of foul so the Mongolian got two points added to his score, which obviously made a difference. Then the Mongolian got aggressive and caught Campbell with two more shots to get up 10-9 and in the last ten seconds he danced away, and then landed another blow as Campbell was rushing him with seconds remaining. Disappointing loss because I thought he boxed the better fight overall.

John Nevin easily beat a Serbian 14-3. The Serbian was coming forward not throwing much in the first two rounds and Nevin used greater speed and mobility to potshot him. In round 3 the Serbian got desperate and started to open up more, allowing Nevin to score with several counters in what was his best round of the fight.
