The WBA has ordered its junior welterweight champion, Amir Khan, to defend his title against Dmitriy Salita in his first title defense. Khan (21-1), won the WBA's 140-pound title from Andreas Kotelnik back in July. He has slightly less than two weeks to negotiate a deal with Salita (30-0-1). If no deal is consummated, the WBA will then hold a purse bid. Given Khan's massive popularity in the UK, the fight is likely headed to England. Both Salita and his manager, Kurt Emhoff are thrilled with the WBA's ruling, because of the uncertainty caused by the WBA's creation of an interim title in the division, which is now held by Marcos Maidana. Emhoff told Boxingtalk, "it's been a long road to get Dmitriy to a world title fight and I'm extremely happy that we now have a mandate from the WBA to make it happen. Khan is an exciting young champion and we have a formidible challenge ahead of us. But I have faith that Dmitriy has the experience and the skills to be a world champion and I'm just really excited that he's finally getting the opportunity." In 2003, Emhoff simultaneously represented two champions (Cory Spinks and Travis Simms) and he hopes to repeat the feat this year with Salita and Giovanni Lorenzo, who competes for the vacant IBF middleweight title next week.
Pretty winnable fight for Khan if you ask me, if it actually gets made.

Khan may as well fight Salita next in December and get his mandatory out the way leaving 2010 for him(warren) to make some bigger fights especially Hatton, Bradley-Peterson, Urango or Diaz.

I think I read Khan has to then fight Maidana within 30 days there after .. thats a far more interesting match up. One I feel is very much 50/50.
Maidana being crude and easy to hit .. Khan being very very fragile about the whiskers.

Salita is no better than a decent journeyman; he's just got the right contacts. The WBA didn't need to order this; Frrank Warren wanted to make this fight before Khan even fought Kotelnik.
What I like about this fight is that Khan should be able to stand his ground and let his hands go, so it should be much more entertaining than the Kotelnik display.

The Maidana fight would be a very interesting clash, but it's one of them annoying 'BIG risk for little reward' fights, so I'd be surprised to see it happen.

In this day of small tv coverage - Khan really needs the belt. So if he wants to keep it, then he`ll have to fight maidana .. providing he beats Salita

The belt means fcuk all IMO when you've Khans drawing power. Amir won't go short of BIG fights because he brings the £$£$£$£$£'s

Has he really still got the drawing power? judging by the empty seats for his last fight .. which just so happened to be his most important .. I`d guess not

Can someone explain to me how purse bids etc work please ?
Apologies in advance for the dumb question.

I don't see where Khan can go without a world title, his whole career has been about winning a world title "I want to be the youngest British world champ" etc, so he wins it and then gives it up...where does he go from there? Fight another light-welter belt holder? Don't think so as they'd all give him trouble, there's no way he'd move back down to lightweight again given the dangerous division that is in terms of world champs, Khan needs the belt.

Well consdiering Kotelnik has never been knocked down, let alone stopped, i thought Khan did a good job

interesting to see if this goes to purse bids or not.
love to see hatton promotions come in and try and win it.
stick it right up frank.
knowing frank he'll get khan to ditch the belt if he don't win purse bids.

I didn't write anything to detract from Khan's win.

Slightly different rules depending on which alphabet but basically there will be short period (in this case 2 weeks) where both parties have the chance to agree purse arrangements without a purse bid. So, for example if allegedly promotions offers x and Team Salita is happy then there will be no purse bids.
If this period passes without agreement then the alphabet will open purse bids where any promotor registered with said sanctioning body (which, by the way costs an annual $5k) can bid for the fight, subject to a minimum (depending on weight, but around $US30k).
That purse is split I think 75/25 in favour of the champ.
If it is an interim v 'full' champ then I understand the purse split is 55/45 in favour of the full champ.

That didn't work out so well for Frank when Woods went and won and ruined any chance of Calzaghe v Johnson.

Khan will beat both comfortably enough. Infact, I am possibly a little more worried about Salita. Salita is not a bad boxer, its all very well having one punch KO power like Maidana - but if your two slow and crude to land it - doesn't mean a thing - plus he can get hurt. Maidana showed good bravery and power against Ortiz, but Ortiz fought like a crab that night.... Now that was a fighter exposed - what a bully.
Bredis Prescott might not have the quickest feet, but he has quick hands and he didn't look crude against Khan - nice jabbing etc, setting up the bombs methodically. Maidana is open, can get hurt and is crude.

I imagine the attendance was still decent enough, plus Khan brings a fair bit of PPV wonga with him
