How did he get up?

Any fights you recall where you wondered how a fighter managed to get up from a punch and beat the 10 count?
For me, I always wondered how Jimmy Ellis got up from the 2nd knockdown against Frazier.

I'll be the first to mention one of the more memorable...Holmes against Shavers.
What'd everyone think of these? I was impressed these guys arose before ten...
Frazier (Knockdown six, sent airborne) vs. Foreman, 1973.
Katsidis (third knockdown, start of round ten) vs. Casamayor, 2008.
Ribalta (that uppercut in the tenth) vs. Tyson, 1986.

He held onto the ropes as he was going down so that helped him get up. He never did get his legs back though.

- By all rights and 99.99% of previously established precedents, Ali was down for a 1000 count in the 15th of Frazier 1. He went down as hard and fast as most any in history, but somehow popped up to finish.
Best example of beating the biggest HomeRun shot heard round the world was Jones/Tarver rematch. People forget that in spite of being blasted several feet onto the ring apron, Roy actually managed to beat the count. Ref had to stop the bout. Never ever heard such a sonically thunderous punch in my life, like bomb going off in a silent film reel.
Roy may not have the best chin, but it's actually pretty solid since it took 50 right hands and 20 left hooks by Johnson in a very poor defensive effort by Roy to put him down for his only full count. Well, that was like 100 counts wrapped into one, but the shots he took were inhuman.

Do you think maybe the length of the left hook that Frazier hit Ali with in the 15th and Ellis in the 4th looks spectacular but in reality dissipates the energy of the punch? Granted, Frazier was an attrition puncher and not a concussive puncher, but had the timing been right a shorter punch would would have been more devastating, imo. Of course, the punch that Rocky hit Walcott with comes to mind.

- You must've forgot the cantelope attached to the side of Ali's face in the post fight interviews.
Frazier had a crook in his forearm that made his left hook particularly vicious. It was the perfect length with his full body weight and timing behind it. Not even a broken jaw from Norton with an additional 10 rds attached distorted Ali's features like that single Frazier punch.

Ruddock getting up from a full force Morrison left hook was surprising.

Frazier's fatigue coming into the fifteenth would've, if anything, taken the most away from his left hook which floored Ali. Still, it was a monster shot, perfectly weighted & executed. Ali arose in startling fashion. Not just a pretty face (actually, not even that after the bout

)

The first knockdown in Moore-Durelle was really heavy, Ol' Archie looked like he was out cold but he got up and made his famous comeback.

Good shout.
It still staggers me that Ali got up, let alone got up so quickly, so late in the fight & whilst he was so tired.
Like him or not, Ali had balls!!!

That's why I had to laugh when someone said in the other thread Frazier faced, "the rusty, 50% version" of Ali in 1971. What a sad joke.
If that were 50% of the Ali of the late-60's in there with Frazier that night, 0% of the ex-champion gets up from Frazier's left hook --- if he even made it to the fifteenth. A true slap in the face to Frazier's achievement.

Holmes took one absolutely flush from Ernie Shavers, a monster puncher, and was able to rise and eventually stop Shavers a couple of rounds later. In various interviews, Holmes has said that Shavers caught him he was out cold and banging his head on the canvas is what brought him around.

and lets not forget holmes getting dropped soooo hard by renaldo snipes. somehow pops-up and dives head 1st into the corner turnbuckle. absolutely amazing recovery.

Snipes was a fairly light puncher. All the more surprising. Holmes had the benefit of facing an opponent who didn't have the power to follow through with his good fortune.
Still, he had to get it together quickly, &, fair play, he did.

Another vote for Holmes getting up from the Shavers right hand. Awesome punch and awesome power of recovery.

Lyle getting up from a Shavers bomb to eventually win their fight. Lyle was completely out of it and the fight should probably have been stopped but he did beat the count.

That last post reminds me --- Foreman looked life a man who'd literally just woken up when he went down, second time around, against Lyle. Of course, he had the benefit of an instant break, but, even so, he perhaps should not have gotten up. That boy was sick.

Gatti against Ward in the first fight. You're not supposed to get up from that, it violates the rules of nature.
I would say Ali against Shavers, who hit Ali as hard as he did Holmes, except for the obvious fact that Ali never actually went down.

good call I.F.F. gatti-ward I. gatti's pained expession lasts well into the count. it's not that he's buzzed....he's in the throes of agonizing pain. obvious pain. even breathing is excruciating. the physical and mental toughness to overcome that suffering is pretty rare i believe.

I was surprised that Vargas finished the 1st rd, let alone almost finish the fight, against Trinidad after the 2nd knockdown in the 1st round.
Corrales against Castillo, even with the mouth piece dropping and the breaks because of them.
Judah against Tszyu :P

I seem to remember thinking Morrison was finished when he was hugging The Truth's shoes.
It wasn't a knockdown, but the left hook that barkley spun Duran's head around with in the 8th was insane.

Holmes against Tyson, the first knock-down!
A terrific one-two by Tyson & only Holmes could have got up from that combo!

The third knockdown Bowe suffered against Golota in their rematch. Saad's mentioning of Morrison hugging Williams' shoes jogged my memory. Bowe was doing the same thing, & in dire straits.

Lewis Vs Grant. The right hand that dropped Grant for the 3rd time, in the first round, was a beast... All credit to Grant for beating the count from that shot and for making it out of the first round.
