You know boxing is a tough game - and a short career.

You dont want to be hanging around in the ring in your 40's or risk serious health damage.

Most fighters know the score - make your money - achieve a good legacy - then get out.

Unfortunaelty alot of fighters are uneducated about money , etc and end up blowing the lot and being skint, etc.

And then they have to fight on well past their prime to pay the bills - or just stay retired and go back to living in poverty.

Ken Bucahenen - talked about fighting again recently as he was so desperate for money - how is old is that bloke now - got to be in his 60's. A once great fighter - now living in a deseperate circumstances.

Mike Tyson earned over $250 million in his career - but he was a uneducated fool - with money hungry leeches all round - had was forced to get beaten up in the ring by Lennox Lewis to pay a tax bill.

Kirkland Langs talents should have brought him richs and a luxury life - now he is a drunken -sleeping on a park bench.

So many fighters end up losing it all.

But who are the fighters - who away from Boxing - have invested their money wisely - and become successful - and what have they done with their money - away from boxing ?

Terry Downes made a fortune as a bookie as he got in on the game just when it was getting, umm, deregulated in the 1960s.

I believe Jim Watt invested a lot of his ring earnings in property which, together with his commentating career, has made him very comfortable. Reg Gutteridge wrote in his autobiography that Watt would have made a good Chancellor of the Exchequer as he was so shrewd financially.

Gary Lockett runs his own Personal Fitness Training Clientelle and has a growing property portfolio

He was only in the ring with Pavlik for money - and just wanted out as quick as he could - and fly home with the cheque.

Calzaghe also has a expanding property portfolio.

Surely Foreman, Ali in merchandise etc must be making a mint, Sugar Ray earned a good coin as a manager soon after he retired (Johnny Tapia) and I'm sure the Contender made him some cash.

Wasn't Billy Schwer doing okay also.

Max Schmelling was some kind of CEO for Coco Cola in Germany, I know he was certainly not lacking financially.

I also read that Michael Olajide is doing pretty well as a fitness trainer in New York.

Don't know about the car business, Stu, but I'm pretty sure I read in BN that Schwer is a successful motivational speaker - something Jon Thaxton also does, I believe.
