Thanks Terap,
As his record indicates Bernardo was a World Class guy who
had a Great Career. I wish he and his family, all the best.

I remember watching his fight with Shavers on ABC Wide World of Sports...It was a pretty exciting fight ...
Mercado got off the floor after taking one of those trademark Shavers right cross to flatten Shavers in the seventh
(IMO the Shavers right is hardest single punch in heavyweight history)
and come back to win Is a terrific accomplishment for Benardo Mercado
Tyson?

Wasn't there talk of a Bernardo Mercardo v Mike Tyson fight at one point?

Yes thats a very good result as Berbick had an iron chin... I regard Tysons ko over Berbick as his best performance.
Mercadoe had great fights with Leon Spinks and Earnie Shavers, both of which I have, ...he also had a great fight with Tex Cobb that I'd sell my wife to get my hands on!... 8)

I read in a old newspaer article about him, that Bernardo Mercado
had knocked out Teofilo Stevenson in the Pan-American games?
Could someone confirm this?

Another intersting bit of info.
Did you know that Trevor Berbick and Bernardo Mercado
fought in the amateurs.
In the Sixth Central American and Caribbean Boxing championships
in Guatemala in August 1975.
The two fought for the gold medal.
Bernardo Mercado won the first two rounds on points but Trevor Berbick knocked him out in the 3rd round to win the Gold medal.

One fight I've been looking for for years is Mercadoes fight with Tex Cobb... I read about it at the time and it was a real brawl... if anyone has this fight or can get it I'd definately be interested in buying it or swapping for it....

I'm pretty sure he didn't. He did fight at the 1974 Central American & Caribbean Games as a light heavy. He was stopped in the semi-final by Venezuela.

It wasnt broadcast. ABC broadcast Holmes v Snipes & Dokes v Chaplin. The Young/Franco Thomas fight was broadcast in 'review format' a few weeks later, all of which i have. I have some footage of the Mercado/Cobb fight, i think HLs.
Cobb said the hardest punch he ever felt was from Shavers. The other 100 came from Bernardo Mercado.
Like a lot of these great missing undercard fights, someone somewhere will have a master copy, so keep searching!

I also read in a old newspaer article from 1975,the year he turned professional, that Bernardo Mercado competed in the 1972 Olmpics.
Isnt there a database somewhere of all of Teofilo Stevenson's amateur fights?

Yes I, too, remember watching Mercado-Shavers on Wide World Of Sports and that it was an exciting fight. Seems to me Shavers decked Mercado in about the third round and had him cut and bleeding, but then Earnie pulled one of his usual fades -- similar to what Foreman did to himself in Zaire -- and was out of gas by the 7th round.
Don't recall Mercado knocking Earnie down. I think he just had him hurt and Earnie was covering up on the ropes and not defending himself while Mercado was peppering away with these little quick shots, and the ref finally stepped in and stopped it.
I've always thought one of the reasons Shavers failed to finish in some of his biggest fights in which he had guys down (i.e. Mercado, Holmes, Lyle) is because he didn't just hit 'em with ANY SHOT when the ref would waive him back in. He always would try to land another bomb, like just landing ANY SHOT wouldn't be good enough, and, in failing to do so, his opponents had just enough time to get their faculties back and manage to survive the round.
Mercado vrs Shavers

Reportly Shavers had cut his glove on Mercado's teeth when he
knocked him down with a uppercut.
The referree did not notice the tear until the fourth round.
According to Shaver's autobiography,he cooled down while they were fixing the glove.
But then why didnt Shaver's finish him off in round three?

Thats true, the ref indeed noticed the tear and the fight was stopped for about 1-2 minutes giving Mercado precious time to recover.
Shavers had Mercado badly hurt with a left-to the body and right on top which floored him in the 3rd, than Mercado simply ran away with Shavers winging shots and most did miss which faded him out.
It was the 7th round where Mercado floored Shavers with pitty-pat punches but Earnie fell down from more than exhaustion or anything, than more quick punches from Mercado and the ref stopped the fight.
