Rocky Marciano vs Floyd Patterson, primes...

Have never thought much about this one, but my first thought is that Rocky surely takes him.
Anybody give Floyd any real chance against Rocky, or thinks he wins? On cuts, maybe?

Agreed.
I just thought there might be someone willing to make some sort of case for Floyd.

I'll leave the door ajar on cuts.
That may sound trite & a cop-out, but I think it may be possible. Many appear to see Marciano winning in one or two, & I don't envision that. Patterson couldn't take his punch, plainly, & he was not as elusive on his feet as even an old Walcott (who, to be fair, found some vintage form against Marciano first-time out), but I can see Patterson's blurred combinations & under-rated power confusing Marciano for a short time in this fight. Marciano doesn't have the attributes of Liston, & I don't believe he disposes of Patterson in similar fashion.
Marciano in six, & that, an almost certainty. Most will probably imagine Patterson gets to the showers long before that, but, if he can produce a cut early with those swift pair of hands of his, & stay on offense enough to make Marciano think even a little about defense, a fluke victory is flickering in the darkness.

Agree that Marciano is not likely to blast out Patterson like Sonny did. Six rounds sounds about right to me.
Like you say, Patterson's hand speed advantage is what made me think of some sort of possibilities for him.
Always admired Floyd's peek a boo, on his toes, probing for a lightning quick attack, style. What a tremendous cruiserweight he would have been.

I think Patterson has a good chance at beating Marciano.
But then again I could see Marciano stopping Floyd, which
I shall admit is the most likely of scenarios. However it could
also go the other wya pretty easily.
I think this would be an exciting and edge of your seat of your
seat fight.

Well, that is definitely going to be the most optimistic posting for Patterson's chances in this thread. Maybe any thread I've ever seen, as a matter of fact.

A smaller guy with chin issues isn't beating Marciano. Floyd would land some eye opening stuff and I think his speed wins some early rds. But Marciano would hammer him down by 7 or 8.

Patterson with his amazing speed could have been the man to upset an aging Rocky, then again a disaster could have struck at any moment.
Prime for prime Marciano could be too strong. Perhaps the older, more cagey version of Floyd could have lasted some rounds as he did against Bonavena and Chuvalo.

I am so gutted that this fight never happened. This is not a pie in the skye fight there primes were only a year or so apart.
Marciano retired after the Moore win yet another win in which he struggled against a great but past his prime fighter. Marciano was outboxed again and even knocked down by Moore.
Just over a year later floyd patterson destroyed Archie Moore with great speed and one great knock out punch. i give floyd a chance against rocky. he had the boxing ability and the punch. he was 21 years old not 37 or 44. Floyd was a great boxer and gave the likes of Ali over 10 years later. He beat himself against Liston which is the man everyone seems to define pattersons whole career by. He was petrified of the man and shouldn't have fought him.
also another point is that liston would have also destroyed marciano.

I think they're talking more along the lines of pitting the Marciano of around 1951-53 against the 1960 Patterson.
Obviously, it could've happened in real life, but I give the 21-year-old Patterson an even slimmer chance against a seasoned, winding-down Marciano than I do the peak version.

How did he beat himself against Liston? Twice?
I agree that Sonny would mutilate Rock but I fail to see how Sonny wasn't the one doing the beating on Patterson.

I can see Patterson stunning Rocky ,with some of his rapid combinations. However once Rocky became accustomed to the speed and power of Floyd's punches, the fight starts to take turn.
Rocky, as we know, gets stronger as the fight warms up and as said, Floyd doesnt posses the foot speed to move away with any real success.
Rocky would really start to hammer away at Floyd, who never lacked heart. He just would not posses the physical strength to keep Rocky at bay. I'd say about 8 rounds.
A cuts victory for Floyd is a genuine point, although probably not much more than that.

patterson, the most mentally complex and fragile heavyweight champ of all time against the most mentally composed and focussed of all time. the one who habitually thought of imminent defeat against even the weakest of opponents versus the other who never even dreamt of losing and would fancy his chances against a rampaging rhino.
lets just say tickets sales would be poor

I think that take on Patterson is more than a bit pessimistic, don't you? I mean, I know it makes a great contrast to write it that way, but that's not the true image of the man.

well, i think my juxtaposition regarding their psychological set up - are you questioning my reading of floyds? - makes this a shut out for the rock...early.
dont get me wrong floyd patterson is, all things weighed up, my favourite heavy of them all, but he is just too mentally complex and fragile (thats why i love him) to last long.
