Murray: 'I'm beyond European level'

The man Dooley elicits a statement from Murray reminiscent of a certain Mr Khan just before he agreed to fight Michael Gomez. The British lightweight champ also reflects on Thaxton and says he wants Katsidis. Seems like the quiet man has found a voice.

He's done nothing yet to prove he's worthy of anything like a world title shot. Needs to get at least a couple of decent scalps before he can start talking like that.

well, the euro title is held up by mezaache and mcallister - the latter of whom murray broke in half with a massive body shot.
so it's no wonder murray wants to get some momentum and move up in class. thaxton was definitely euro class, and if mcallister beats mezaache, he will be also. does murray really need the euro scene, which (romanov aside) is no better than the domestic scene?
if he's willing to go for it, i say good luck to him. i do think he could do with another fight to nudge him in that direction.
i agree with terry dooley's article on BS re the WBO rankings. i think murray vs "former world champ" rees is a great idea. rees is a handful, very aggressive, very fit; it should/could move murray up and it'd be a great preparation for some of the aggressive world class/fringe world class, fighters. (obviously, it'd also get murray the lonsdale belt for keeps if successful.)

I would like to see Murray fight Meezache then we will see if he's good enough for world level. If he beats Meezache I would like to see him fight Yuri Romanov that would be a stern test for him

Murray would benefit from winning the European belt, he may well be able to get a fight for a World title for his next fight but that may take a while. Winning the Euro belt in the mean time would increase his World ranking with all the bodies and also would ensure he is guranteed defences against decent European opposition.

Yep, the likes of Romanov and Rees would be good tests at this stage. I'd view the Romanov fight as the perfect gauge of his aspirations as I'd slightly lean towards Romanov at this juncture but would love to be proven wrong.

Hennessy won't be able to deliver a world title shot for Murray until he gets into a mandatory position, so he should start looking at who's ahead of him in the rankings of the different sanctioning bodies and target those guy's. Katsidis isn't going to come to Britain, he's gone to America and proven himself.

he should get the european belt first and a couple of defenses that would land him a manadatory and keep him busy against a good level of opposition

Terry D wrote:It is worth pointing out that Murray made the call for Katsidis prior to the fight and did it exclusively to BN online in his re-fight interview, then it got picked up second-hand by a fair few people.
He's a good talker and the Euro thing is a sign of his sheer belief that he can take anyone in a one-on-one fight.
under each article you should write "remember you heard it here first" - boxingtalk style

Is Meezache really a gatekeeper to see if Murray is good enough at World level? I think not. Meezache is a limited fighter.
The only way to find out if Murray is ready for world level fights is to match him at world level and see how he gets on. Win or lose, he will gain valuable experience from a fight a world level.
It is time for Murray to step up. If we are talking about a gatekeeper to world level, what about bringing Barrerra back over to Manchester?

i'm glad to hear that they want to move up. i don't think british level helps all that much for world title aspirations. unless you are getting a safe belt, vacant belt, getting protected etc. not that many good stylists at euro level though i really rate romanov and a lot could be learned in that fight. not sure anyone would fight romanov for no title (though earl did).
with mezaache hogging the EBU title - lucky bastard - and mcallister getting in the way, i think it's time for some kind of international opponent. perhaps like jamie moore did with lujan. but i would say not someone who has been battered or had his ear nearly knocked off, as lujan had and went on to give a quite negative performance v mooresy....i would perhaps rule out someone like pitalua, whom valero destroyed. but someone at that level nonetheless.

I`d like to see a murray v reese match-up if he can`t get a European shot. Reese would be a good name on his record - and more importantly - it would make for a great little war as long as it lasted.
Yuri Romanov is a potential banana skin for most at or nearing world title level.
