That would be an awesome fight.

i would have to side with ray on this 1 as jones didnt start to become the superman he became until super middle. at middle he was too young to fight off leonard who had many years of fighst behind him at the time he went to middle and was arguably more skillfull due to his more orthadox style

personally i'd love to see roy win this as hes 1 of my all time fave but at middle id have to favour leonard

Ray v PBF would be a nice fight too.

I think a prime SRL is an even bet to beat any man his size in any era.

a welter SRR was untouchable no1 would beat him at that weight its just hes mostly known for his middleweight exploits which were great

from what ive seen of robinson at welter (only 6 fights) he moved around liek a dream they didnt come close to him in the title bouts i saw. at middle and light middle id say people would of come close to him and did beat him i just think at welter he could of achieved more but he wasnt there long enough

Agreed.

Leonard was a WW and even though I don't think that MW was RJJ's best weight, he would still have been too much for the smaller Leonard at 160.

i know what you mean leonard could hang up there with SRR and gavilan would of done a good job same with mayweather i suspect

Incidentally, I don't think Jones has the body of work at Middleweight to win this. He was still fairly green. However...

At Super-Middle, this would've been a dramatically different story. Jones, inside the distance, there. The Middleweight fight would be competitive, but still a clear Leonard decision. Too much experience in the hip pocket for that Jones.

Leonard was forty one years old and coming off a six year layoff and the second time he fought professionally in the last eight years. It was the first time Leonard was stopped in his career.

I am aware of this.

Roy Jones Jr will win this fight and big. It would be a wide margin. The great Sugar Ray Leonard never showed that he had what it takes from 154lbs on up. At welterweight though, Sugar Ray was at his very best.

Roy would be too fast, too strong for Ray at 160. Better chance for Ray would be at 154lbs, and I don't think he would even win that one at that weight. .

In my view, SRL had two careers. In the first career he was a fighter that deserved the name "Sugar Ray". He was a warrior and tried to dominate the other fighter. In his second career, when I lost all respect for him, he used his "star" power to set conditions up in his favor (ring size, etc), did a few shoeshine flurries, fought the last 30 seconds of the round, played to the audience and judges......

In my opinion, RJJ was never a warrior. He was however the most physically talented fighter I have ever seen - speed, reflexes, movement.

While I don't like SRL because of his second career, I would be a fan of the SRL of his first career in a fight against RJJ.

However, SRL's most important attributes were his speed and reflexes. RJJ is the one fighter who I can think of who had superior speed and reflexes.

So, I can't see SRL beating RJJ. But, I think it would be a fairly boring fight with RJJ winning a close unanimous decision.

Even at Jr. Middle? I don't believe it. I know it wasn't Leonard's most successful venture, but I still wanna know what Jones proved there which would make him favourite.

these two sparred before in '88 i believe. there's footage somewhere of it but not on youtube. at 160 this is a close fight. jones would make this a boring fight and use speed and size advantage to stay outside. imo jones would win a decision unless ray brings his judges from the second hearns fight.

anyone who thinks this is a great fight is only fooling themselves. This is a total mismatch, even worse than Norris-leonard or Camacho-leonard

No matter how green Roy was, experience would not be a factor (Terry Norris overwhemlingly proved it) and would mercilessly slice and dice Sugar with blindingly fast combinations. Ray Leonard was never in the same class as Roy, much less as a middleweight, abandoning his title at the first sign of a live contender.

Ray just cannot handle this kind of speed, not on this level. It would be too much. A roy Jones body shot drops him over in the 4th with Roy following up with 50 unanswered shots to the head. Roy is well ahead at the time of the stoppage
