Former NY Golden Gloves champion stabbed trying to save kids

Simon Somerville, 1989 New York Golden Gloves novice 132lbs champion was critically injured trying to save the lives of youngsters from a gang attack.

Somerville is from London, and won his title in the same NYGG tournament that Adrian Dodson picked up the 147lbs open title (1989). Are they the only Englishmen to win it ever?
Hopefully Simon will make a full recovery.

Lets hope he recovers and the scum who did it get sent down for a long time.
There has been two other English NY GG champions in Michael Bentt and Manchester
born Tunde Foster - there might even be more but I don't know who they are..

I may be wrong but Junior Neequaye from Nigeria may have been based over here for a bit boxing out of the All-Stars gym in Paddington before relocating to NYC and winning in 1990 & 1992. There's a mention of him on the wall in the Harrow Road gym.

Top bloke by the sounds of it, here's a quote from him on the kids who stabbed him 14 times.
"I don't feel animosity," he said. "They need help, and I'd work with them. Sometimes when you're young you get caught up in things. And when you end up inside a jail cell, who's going to help you then? Once I get better I want to get out there and take helping young people to a new level.
"I want to take something positive out of this."
