What is the future of it? With Lennox Lewis being the only active (just) fighter who has headlined a PPV event in the UK (actually there's Tyson as well I suppose) I can't see where the next one is coming from.

You see this is my only hope for Calzaghe and Hatton one day being matched with a real top fighter, PPV generates a lot of cash and boxing promoters do like the green, don't we all.

My theory is that they see Hatton-Witter is being possible PPV and will be looking at that for next summer. However they need to get Witter a title to make it a kind of unification clash or get Hatton an easier WBC shot and let Witter pick up the WBU belt.

Anyway I'm digressing, I didn't really want the thread to be about the tired old subject that is Hatton-Witter, just wondering from where the next PPV show will come, especially one not featuring Lennox or Tyson.

Yeah, when Hatton and Calzaghe get their big fights they will be PPV.

Remember when Setanta had Hopkins-Hakkar and RJJ-Ruiz earlier in the year, they charged about 15 quid i think. Dont think it did that well cos they haven't done it since.

the thing is with ppv sky relies on people who arent boxing fans to buy it as well, like lennox naz and tyson even thou people arent boxing fans they still bought the fights, quiet a few people i knew did this,

For me the only way Hatton & Calzaghe will be PPV is if they appear on a bill together against very high risk opponents. Neither can generate Naz-like interest on their own IMO.

We don't get such a bad deal over here to be fair especially since BBC have started showing foreign bouts, remember too Mosley-DLH is on Sky Sports on September 13th for free from 12.00am. Hopkins V Joppy MAY be shown on Setanta Sports when it happens as may Jones Jnr V Tarver because Setanta have a contract with Don King and "Kingvision" and Jones Jnr and Hopkins are both king promoted hense Jones Jnr-Ruiz and Hopkins-Hakkar being shown. Other than that only Tyson and Lewis bouts will be shown IMO because as Kilburn mentioned no one else can draw the crowds. If Calzaghe fought say Ottke and Hatton fought Corley or Witter on the same bill then it would possibly make PPV. Otherwise it's doubtful, at the moment however we are getting the big ones for free anycase, Toney-Jirov (BBC), Mayweather-Sosa (SKY), Vargas-Vanderpool (SKY) and Latin Fury cards not to mention Harrison, Hatton, Calzaghe on SKY and Eastman and co on BBC. HBO charged fifty dollars for DLH-Campas, Sky showed it free.

In my opinion, the only way a British fighter (Lewis excluded) will make PPV if their fight inconjuction with a decent bill in the USA.

I think the only 2 who might generate that would be Hatton or Calzaghe.

Remeber "War of the Worlds" we had a jointly owned PPV DLH vs Quartey/Calzaghe vs Reid - none of these fighters have headlined a PPV since, so I don't see how that has changed.

Incidently, alot of the UK PPV fights - in the good times when we'd have a craking bill over here followed by a Big US fight involved Rob Reid. Was he being groomed for PPV before Malinga beat him? (again that was on PPV).

There's a few chances depending if the fights ever happened, or and who had the deal.

A British fighter against a huge world star will always get a PPV over here, even if neither have been PPV main eventers themselves. I think Jones vs Woods would have made PPV status had sky shown it.

I believe Paul Ingle was been groomed for PPV status as a main eventer, as was Oliver - two of the most talented fighters we had in the 90's.

Hatton vs Tszyu is a sure fire PPV

As is Brodie/Harrison vs Barrera/Morales.

Calzaghe might be harder because of the way Sky (Piper especially) has downgraded Calzaghe's best possible opponents (Hopkins and Ottke). Piper has already stated numerous times that the fights are forgone conclusions - so who would want to see them.

Robin Reid was a great fighter and the loss to Malinga came at a very bad time, anyone who has read my posts on the main forum knows my contempt for the scoring in Reid-Calzaghe fight which i had Reid winning even with the 1 point deduction. Calzaghe simply didn't do enough in the final rounds while Reid found the target with right hands all night long, similar to how Eubank and Woodhall did which puts me in doubt as to whether Calzaghe could beat a top technician like Hopkins with his vulnerability to take the right hand.

I doubt Ingle would have made a case for a PPV showing alone, he was exciting granted but would he have generated the cash? I am unsure, his career was put paid anyway by a classy showing from South African Mbulelo Botile who in turn lost to Frankie Toledo so i doubt Ingle could have aspired to the level of demanding a lone PPV event.
