Smith most ardent supporters always point to the fact he is a nice guy and loves boxing.
I've never heard anyone accuse him of being good at his job!

i have never seen an issue with him...the 'adam smith is crap' argument is the biggest overreaction in boxing.

Maybe so, but his voice is bleedin irritating, and he shouts all the time, even when there's nothing happening. You'd think the fighters touching gloves was the second coming of the messiah the amount of gravitas his booming gravelley voice lends the incident.
I mean, we all like a bit of drama added, but not when there's nothinig actually worth dramatising.

That, perfectly, sums up my own thoughts on Smith. I would love to see Sky appoint John Rawling full-time - he is the best British commentator in the business.

Darke should have got this gig and Smith the Hatton-Ndou fight. I see Darke as the far better commentator. As mentioned, Smith is far too animated. But at the same time commentating to me looks like a job that is a lot harder than it looks - the commentators probably get a little too much Flak on here. And I suppose its also down to personal preference; a lot of people seem to think Jim Watt is poor but overall I think he's up there with the best in the business.

He is a nice guy and does love his boxing, is he the best boxing commentator around, of course not but he ain't that bad guys, he has improved a shade as well, he gets excited because he is commentating on a sport he loves, believe me it ain't easy to stay calm when you commentate on something you have a passion for.
I had a brief spell (3 days) commentating on horse racing for a tv outlet once, after doing my first 6 races, i came back into the office to find all my mates smiling and looking at me, how did it go lads, whaddya think and such like flew from my mouth.
Well have a listen they said and proceeded to play back what I thought was going to be the dogs bollocks of commentaries, I had picked up all the fallers and done my homework on how many days since someone rode a winner type crap etc etc.
Lo and behold I sounded like a wailing banshee, at one point a horse fell at the second fence in a novice chase and it sounded like the final furlong of the grand national, i was absolutely hyper and even the going down to post talk through which should be calm and informative was still way over the top and \I was clearly not in control of what was coming out of my mouth.
The point I am making is I and indeed most of you guys have probably always believed we could do a better job with our knowledge and love for the game, its not that easy as I have found to my cost, my career lasted three days before I was moved to "put my knowledge to greater use" which basically meant I was crap.
Still think Smith is ok at what he does and his knowledge is better than a lot give him credit for, would I have had him over Darke for a fight like this, the honest answer is no but I tell you he will give it all he has got and then some and it will be ok for me as the fight is sure to be a belter as long as it lasts.

And well put again, I can imagine it's very hard to get it right, really hard, he'll get better no doubt.
I saw him in my local gym the other day, thankfully he didn't start commentating on my rowing machine skills, though he'd probably have made it sound quite exciting.

Smith isnt a great commontator but he does try his best and he loves the sport, Rawling is a good commontator as is the Eurosport guys Bob Mee and Steve Holdsworth they see it how they see it. The whole SKY team are bad every home fighter gets a good review but I do like Jim Watt

Bob Mee is excellent, really knows his stuff and one of the best around, pity he's on eurosport though, he should be on the sky team, far more to offer than Nelson and Piper. He should still be writing for BN too. Holdsworth is too jaded though.
WHAT a job Adam Smith has, being paid to fly first class to the Pac fight, staying in fight hotel as well I guess, amazing job.
