The majority of the program was based around Marcus Trescothick, in all honesty cricket has to be one of the least stressful professional sports out there, look at how serious the rest of the England team take it.

i've turned out at cricket a bit last year for a friend. Mainly for the tan, and it beats the crap out of moping indoors with a hangover. I landed a 6 actually it went smack bang right up this fat woman's crack that was lying down playing with her kids, bet it left a right whelk.....mind you she got a warning a minute earlier. Right hander you see, couldn't help it.

that's all it is tho'....a GAME, for anyone. As a sport, I don't take cricket seriously WHATSOEVER. It's just a posh boys' jolly and it's pretty sad the amount of coverage it gets.

The difference between playing for fun and representing your country, doing it for a job putting food on the table of course is pressure.
That pressure is the difficult thing to deal with and should not be taken lightly. Even in boxing I find the emotional duress of a fight takes much more out of you than the physical

most kids play football. Most kids do not play cricket. I agree about the boxing though.

Absolutley spot on Hagler

In boxing - you have a one minute rests between rounds - In cricket - you have 'tea' and 'rain stops play'

I remember reading an article as a kid about when the players stop for Lunch/Tea what they have in the Somerset
players room (This is when Somerset were one of the best sides in the world with Viv Richards, Ian Botham etc) big
fruit cakes, trifles and sausage rolls made by old dears with lashings of tea! No wonder we never beat Australia.

Why does cricket get an obsence amount of coverage - because the toffs who run the BBC think sport is golf, tennis and cricket
and they think they should spend our money funding the crappy sports they enjoy instead of the sports we (the public) enjoy.

Depression is an illness, wether your playing cricket or working in the local supermarket.

There is still a stigma attached to any sportsman connected with depression, everyone says 'what do they have to be depressed about' .

I think we are all aware of your first point. I have suffered from it as I am sure a fair few people on here have.

However, I am pretty sure Marcus Trescothicks depression is not brought on/ or related to cricket - as you say - it can strike down anyone
at any time.

I'm no fan of cricket (despite being from Somerset), but I've just finished reading Trescothick's book and it's a genuinely heart-breaking read. I'd defy anyone to read it and not be deeply moved by his predicament. Oh, and it's not related to cricket, it's far more complicated than that.

Without knowing Trescothicks case specifically, all we have done is read the news reports etc. My impression is that his depression is not brought on by Cricket.

Cricket's a Gentlemans game, it's no wonder you lot don't like it. You're not quite as refined as myself

It appears your post was trying to belittle Trescothicks depression because he plays cricket? If thats the case then thats a narrowminded 'backwards' view from yourself. But yeah thanks for the reply. c o c k.

Er no, I was implying that I found it hard to believe his illness was caused by cricket

hence why I asked for clarification on what your point was! It could easily have been contrived that way without being backward or an 8 year old!

But in anycase there never has to be any reason, and trying to find or justify one is often where the stigma is born.

It's frustrating to hear some of the ignorant views people have about depression. Having said that it's true what was said on the programme, you can't really expect somebody to understand it unless it happens to them. Likewise I understand people thinking it could never happen to them, but it can happen to anybody, not just 'weak' people. I don't hear many people saying Winston Churchill was weak.

I do hope that the programme will help people to think a little more before judging people that suffer with it. After all, people wouldn't kill themselves if they could just count their blessings and snap out of it would they?

Leaving aside the flippancy of how one professional sport is somehow less stressful than another, you're very wrong about Cricket. The suicide rate amongst cricketers is shockingly high when compared to the average person.
