With another six pages torn from the calendar, it is time again to reassess the progress boxers of the Emerald Isle have been making. Over the last six months Irish boxing has certainly been subjected to the high highs and low lows that our beloved pugilistic arts can deliver. We gained two new European champions in Matthew Macklin and Paul McCloskey but lost the world title belonging to Bernard Dunne and, more significantly, there was the tragic passing of Darren Sutherland.

1. Bernard Dunne - 28-2 (15 KO) Super bantamweight

2. Paul McCloskey - 20-0 (10 KO) Light welterweight
European light welterweight champion

3. Matthew Macklin - 25-2 (18 KO) Middleweight
European middleweight champion

4. Martin Lindsay - 15-0 (6 KO) Featherweight
British featherweight champion

5. Andy Lee - 20-1 (14 KO) Super middleweight
Irish super middleweight champion

6. John Duddy - 27-1 (17 KO) Middleweight

7. Andrew Murray - 16-0 (8 KO) Lightweight
European Union and Irish lightweight champion

8. Brian Magee - 32-3-1 (22 KO) Super middleweight

9. John O'Donnell - 22-1 (10 KO) Welterweight

That top 10 shows that Irish boxing is going through a good patch Thats quite a strong 10.

a lot of that came from Barry McGuigan who just happens to be his manager. He was a very good amateur but I think hes too young and its too early in his pro career to be calling him a top prospect! Another 7/8 fights and we will know alot more..

Im surprised Eddie Hyland isn't higher than 17 and even more surprised that he is below his brother Paulie on the list, Eddie has fought and beaten higher calibre opponents than Paulie. I don't know how Magee has gone up 2 places without fighting in over a year but apart from its a good list

Yes very true sadly, guess if we did do a Welsh one it would be something like.

1) Clev
2) Rees
3) Enzo Mac
4) Pryce.
5) Buckland.
6) Samuels
7) Matthew Edmunds.
8) Barrie Jones.
9) Geraint Harvey
10) Tony Doherty.

I've probably missed a few out, (well Damien Owen, Taz Jones, Nathan King) - but its amazing to think about 2 years ago it could be argued that we should have 3 in the top 5 (certainly top 10) of the British P4P lists, and possibly a further 2 in top 20.

Things can happen very quick in the sport. 2 years ago Welsh boxing was considered the "hot bed" of talent. Now look. Only really 1 from that list is going places at the moment. I do hope Rees and Pryce can comeback to the level they once were at.

At least ye have probably the best prospect between Britian and Ireland in Cleverly. Its funny how the success of one boxer can lead to others coming through. Wales is only going through a rebuilding phase as they say, like Ireland was before Collins and McCullough came along in the 90's

Apollo - do you reckon Rogan should be higher or lower - not sure what the "hmmm" means mate.

Frampton was a quality am and is looking good so far in the pros. But we shouldnt be hyping or putting pressure on him. We had the same issue with the Dazzler, RIP hombre!, obviously he has more promise and talent than others on the list but they have to prove it in the ring first.

Eddie v Paulie. Eddie has beat Sweet Pea and Fagan, his win over Kirkorov looks decent but in reality Kirkorov hasnt beaten anyone with a positive record in over ten years. Paulie win over Marc Callaghan and Heagney equate to Sweet Pea and Fagan but the really reason is the manner of Eddies defeat to Stephen Mullin - he was truely awful and that memory lingers in my mind.

Magee. A bit hypocritical but I just think I had him too low last time and used the excuse that he has a Euro title fight coming up to bring him up to where I think he should be.

I never seen Eddie vs Mullin so I cant comment on it but it was over 3 and a bit years ago and maybe needs to be forgotten about as a bad night. Paulie was beaten last year although if he had of had 2 more rounds he prob would have nicked that but... In my opinion I think Eddies win over Fagan was a better achievement than Paulie beating Heagney. I say that because I think Fagans two SD defeats to Kimbrough and the still unbeaten Spadafora have to stand for something or do they?

Without wanting to go into a major political debate, this is just a question.... Is Peter McDonagh not eligable? What about Jamie Moore?

I use these two criteria for inclusion. A. Born on the island of Ireland, or B. consider themselve primarily Irish.

McDonagh would qualify - just not good enough.

Moore wouldnt qualify - whilst being proud of his Irish roots and being an Irish champion he would consider himself primarily English.

Thats my take!

Okay, I think McDonagh would warrant a place in the top 20 ahead of some of the prospects.

The fact that Moore holds an Irish title - and went out of his way to box for it - means, for me, that he should definitely be included on the list. Just my point of view.

Frampton's the real deal.

Agreed when someone like John O'Donnell is 9th that says a lot he is a very talented boxer, good time for Irish boxing

Draft already "Dunne" - plenty of movement as a result!

Usual boxing season for Paddy's is March with guys getting drafted over to the US to feed their insatiable mid-March thirst so it will be out on the 1st of May!
