Last night -- Erik Morales vs Manny Pacquiao I
Weird because it is both El Terrible's Last Hurrah & his best night. Fantastic, fantastic fight. Showed A) the way to beat Manny (stay away from him at all costs, don't go looking for him unless you're completely sure you can hit him without being done yourself, when he misses he throws himself off-balance a little & then you can close with him & score when he almost doesn't expect it, fvcking glue that right glove to the side of your jaw, jab him really flipping hard 'cos it breaks up his rhythm) & B) that to beat him you have to literally go through Hell.
Great great fight all around really - skill, punching power, guts, swings of fortune. If I was Erik I'd have retired after that & gone back to eating burritos & smoking those fat cohibas (never forget the shot of him ringside at Corrales-Castillo I). But I'm not Erik.

Two nights ago --- Vazquez-Marquez II. Excellent, enthralling stoush, & worthy of its Fight Of The Year mantle for 2007. Still, the end bothers me. I thought it was premature then, I think it was premature now.

Jack Johnson - Jim flyn
Flyn constantly fouls and the ref doesnt care - johnson gives him a beat down and wins

Last night I watched Victor Rabanales-Joe Tatsuyoshi I-II, pretty decent fights, Rabanales reminds me a lot of Bazooka Limon and he outworks and stops the brave Japanese fighter in the first fight. I didn't watch the second one to closely because I was occupied with a plate of leftovers but it seemed to me from what I saw it looked like Rabanales was contolling the majority of the fight on the inside with angles and volume. But then again I tuned out for large chunks of the fight so I probably missed quite a bit.
Today I think I am going to watch Fenech-Nelson I if I have the time.

Prince Charles Williams vs Merqui "My Nickname Should've Been Waters" Sosa I.
Absolutely fecking incredible phone-booth slugfest. Almost too vicious to watch; Alan Sugar (on the apparent advice of the ring doctor & Larry Hazzard) stops it after seven because they're both taking too much punishment, so it's a Technical Draw. Sosa's face is deformed (right eye/cheekbone a solid mass of swelling, swollen left eye, busted nose, cut over & under both eyes), Williams has a two-inch gash above his left eye. Sosa was pounding Williams with huge crude bombs to head & body in the seventh, but the ref had been to his corner several times & I think after the sixth told them both "One more round."
No complaints as to the stoppage from me, because that fight was something else. The kind of fight where both guys go at it like they've been told they'll be disqualified if they jab (or block a punch).

Frank Bruno v Jumbo Cummings, v Witherspoon and v Lewis.
Never liked Bruno as a fighter, never had a good thing to say about him. But I will give him his due, having rewatched these and with the benefit of hindsight, he was a bloody good fighter while his tank was full. Just seemed to literally run into a brick wall at a certain point.
His performance against Lewis looks very good now (good performance pre-fight too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKyuVd2JoAo - no way Lewis was going to get under Frank's skin!). Maybe if he came in lighter....................................................................... he would have hit the wall later in the fight!

Leonard vs Hearns 2 I had it even it was a very close fight, with the great Reg Gutteridge commentating comparing hitting Leonard to watching Bambi's mum dying

Ali Vs Liston I - Came away thinking Liston was vastly overrated...and had no heart whatsoever. The fight was stopped after the 6th round and Liston had a small cut and was busted up slightly (at the most). Ali landed hardly anything of note in the final 6th round to make someone quit.

You'd probably draw the same conclusion if you just watched Duran's effort against Leonard.
A career is a long thing, & funny things can happen on any given night. Liston had some real heart in several of his bouts. For whatever reason (let's not get into it, folkes), he quit that night. Doesn't mean he was a quitter by definition.

6 rounds of getting bashed up by a younger, faster, more motivated fighter will do that to many guys.
Liston was an excellent fighter. No need to run the guy down. He belongs up there in the pantheon of champions.
(Jeez, I hope i used that word pantheon correctly or that pudendum Carlos The Jackass will rip me a new arsehole!)
