Brodie vs Jorrin... Was it really a robbery?

by The REAL McCoy
McCoy was on his holidays in sunny Spain when this fight took place, he was in the pub getting pissed & singing Bob Marley hits in the style of the great Tom Jones & also throwing peanuts in the air & catching them in his singing mouth 8)

Anyway, SKY news was on in the background, & McCoy being the huge boxing fan that he is stopped singing, when he seen the result of the Brodie & Jorrin fight

The newsreader then said that Brodie was robbed in a fight that everyone thought he won

When McCoy arrived back to Glasgow with cheap Vodka(he drank so much of it he started to speak Russian) & a sunburned nose, he got in touch with his old friend who had recorded the fight for him

So he eventually sat down(sober by now) & watched the fight, scoring it round by round, fully expecting to come to the same conclusion as almost everyone else, that Brodie was robbed

Here's the sting in the tail though, McCoy actually had Jorrin winning the fight, by 1 round

In many of the rounds nothing much actually happened, but SKY & Jack Trickett would have you believing otherwise, with Trickett even having the audacity to say midway through the fight "My boy is beating the shit out of him"

SKY analyst Barry McGuigan & Jim Watt annoyed McCoy even more than Jack 'Daniels' Trickett with their screaming how Brodie was robbed

They seem to forget that Jorrin actually floored Brodie, in what was an intruiging but hardly mouth-watering fight, with a lot of rounds that could have easily gone either way

Agreed. People chuck the phrase 'robbery' around far too easily in my opinion. Except when they are mucking about and are pretending to be a Chineseman saying 'rubbery' which can be quite funny depending on your current state of sobreity.

That's the thing that 12 round fights have increased, quite often the last 3 championship rounds of a 15 round fight would make the decision a little clearer but now 2 very fit young men can battle out 12 evenly contested nip-and-tuck rounds.

And IMO Brodie-Jorrin falls into that category. Sure it's fine to say you thought Brodie nicked it but robbery it was not.

It's like when people say Mercer was jobbed against Lennox Lewis. How can you be 'jobbed' in a 10 round fight when you clearly lost at least 4 rounds? That means you had to clearly win the other 6 or you don't have a case and even that is still a close decision!

By the way, chucking peanuts in the air and catching them in my mouth is one of my only talents, I'm really good! We should have a contest sometime.

Good posts. The knockdown in the 10th cost Brodie dear on the cards it seemed, but Jorrin would have won anyway, given the two scores of 115-112 and 116-112 in his favour (the third was all even at 114-114). So it was a strange one. Brodie seemed to be controlling the fight, but he made the huge mistake of not really stamping his dominance on it. Judges hate that. They hate to see a fighter fighting as if he's holding something back. The same thing happened to Marvin Hagler when he challenged Vito Antuofermo for the world middleweight title back in 1979. Hagler boxed as if HE were the champion and, like Brodie, held his own throughout without really stepping it up. It cost him the title. The judges made it a draw.
There's still still a feeling among many judges that a challenger has to TAKE the world title. Really grab it. Brodie and Hagler didn't do that, though Hagler learned his lesson. When he did rip the world title from Alan Minter, he subsequently defended it as if HE were the challenger.
Brodie has also learned in my opinion. I'm expecting him to beat Chi in October.

Another example of a fighter who fought like he was holding something back: Lennox Lewis in the first fight with Holyfield. We all know what the outcome was of that.

Exactly. Most who have known me for a few years on these forums will know I'm a Lennox fan but again I didn't feel this was a robbery.

What was scandalous was the scoring of the round (the 5th I think) that Eugenia Williams gave to Holyfield when he was getting walloped, now that was controversial, but in general the fight was fairly close and Lennox didn't grab it with both hands.

Although IMO the perception of Holyfield as champion going into that fight was entirely unjust, Lewis was the linear champ so if anything the notion of a champion going into that bout should have been dispelled beforehand.

Robbery???

IMO Brodie just nicked it but a good argument could be made for either fighter, but it was no way a robbery for me watching it live on TV.

Haven't seen the fight for a long time, I think I scored it for Brodie by 2 rounds. Brodie won, but it was a quite a close contest. Some of the things McGuigan was saying i.e "Jorrin won cause he's the nationality as Sulliman" was a bit rediculous.

Another fight that I encourage people to watch again is Leonard vs Hearns II, widely acknowledged as one of the worse decisions ever (even admitted by Leonard in BM). However, I actually have watch the fight quite a number of times (sad I know, but as a Student it beats Trisha! - except for when Kirkland Laing was on it). My score is now consistent a draw, and actually being fair to Hearns (scoring the last round 10-9 to leonard, when it could have been 10-8 ).

Hearns was hurt in the 5th (which was a 10-8 round) and did next to nothing for the next 5 rounds. He dominated early, but Leonard was in control of the middle and late rounds (barring the 11th).

On fight in which I often thought that some crooky went on in the scoring was Benn vs Eubank II, the draw was fair in my opinion. But 2 of the judges gave Benn the last 2 rounds otherwise Eubank would have won. However, these were two of Eubank's best rounds. Something was wrong with those cards, although I feel the overall result was correct - as did McGuigan.

Good stuff, I love your accounts and your little stories (for want of a better word) in your post. Keep it up.

I scored it by a round to Brodie but i suppopse a draw could have been fair, i never liked Jorrin anyway he was always a hometown champ for me. And by the way McCoy congrats on the peanut catching! i can do it with Maltesers, does that count?

Jack 'Daniels' Trickett is a classic. I love listening him slur his words in the Sky-TV interviews. I once went to Belgium with Jack when Najib Daho challenged Jean-Marc Renard for the European super-featherweight titrle back in the 80's. Jack was great company. One of boxing's characters.

Man, you like McCoys posts AND Tom Jones?

This could be the start of a great friendship :)

Thanks for the kind words Stu
