I just did a quick 'Google' search and there are several links to confirm that he was indeed the first boxer to use a mouthguard.

Jacob Marks a dentist from the East End of London(England)is credited for inventing the gum shield in the early 1900's.
He took molds of various fighters mouths.Ted Kid Lewis was the first boxer credited for"Regularly" wearing one.
