I can't think of any weaker mandatory challengers at World level.

Have there been any?

Mario Veit maybe he was very poor

after last nights defeat Salita is now the 19th best Light Welterweight in the USA

I honestly don't think I have seen or heard of a worst mandatory challenger, I wouldn't even bet on him in a WBU or IBU title fight.

Veit - he was unreal.

A huge, chiselled, intimidating super bum.

A wazza wet dream of an opponent.

I dont know if he was a Mandaory but i remember Looking up Bobby Gunn just before he was down to fight Tomasz Adamark and thought how could he be fighting for an IBF World Title be rated 25 odd in USA and 100 odd in the World......

The African guy that Scott Harrison stopped in about 30 seconds. I think Harrison swung, missed and knocked him out with the wind from his punch.

Who was that Naseem victim "Lawal" I think it was who went very quickly, was he a mandatory or just normal WBO fodder?

Think it was Naz's first or second defence.

I think he knocked him down with the first punch and stopped him about 20 seconds later if I remember rightly

Salita might have been bad, but lets be truthful.... how much worst than Gary Lockett or Michael Jennings.

in fairness stu, we will never know how good salita was or is, he got caught cold just like khan against prescott, viewers watching khan for the first time would have said the same about him.

first round KO's look awfu, but if the first KD hurts you bad, you dont have time to recover against a decent finisher, which khan is.

jennings and lockett were as bad, without doubt, we get a bit rose tinted as regards our own 'domestic' class fellas.

As said. Salita wasn`t as bad as he looked last night .. he just got caught cold by a guy who is always a very fast starter - with fast hands.

Veit beat Jurgen Braemer, so he obviously wasn't that bad.

Samuel Kebede, his performance that night was very weird to say the least.

What is interesting is that after a 3 year layoff(starting from the loss to Harrison) he goes and beats Mihaita Mutu at Lightweight. Mutu has a points decision win over Barry Morrison, where he looked very good and also a stoppage win over Young Muttley.
He then got stopped by Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2 rounds but put up a better fight than he did against Harrison.

Veit wasn't that bad, he was a bit vulnerable but technically he was a good fighter and has wins over Braemher, Brewer, Mock, Kabary Salem and several guys like Antonio Brancalion(who fights Nathan Cleverly for the European title in his next fight). He even managed to fight an even fight with Denis Inkin for 6 rounds while past his prime, before getting stopped.

Salita is definitely worse than Veit. Did Enzo Maccarinelli have any mandatories ?, what about that awful New Zealander, Azzaoui ?

i remember naz boxing said lawal he ko'd him in 30 seconds he was piss poor he was very lowly ranked at the time

I've seen enough of Salita to know whilst he aint world class, he would mix it at domestic and possibly European title class. I'd tip McCloskey to beat him, but he could hang with anyone lower ranked than him domestically.

Salita vs Jennings would be a damn decent fight.

Wasn't Richie Wenton, a slightly passed it Wenton, fought Barrera for the vacant WBO Super Bantam title.

Yes I completely agree, he conducted himself admirably throughout.

He's had such a tough life, boxing was his saviour, and then he found religion. I do have the feeling that he is so focused on the boxing that I hope he has a great support system now. He's been a long time mandatory, a long time dreaminig of this -this defeat is catastrophic... and I hope it doesn't have and other consequences.

I was just hoping that he would conduct himself okay in the ring, not get embarresed - ship a brave points loss or something and at least look at a way of coming again,

Perhaps another thread title could read "Which fighters have been more protected than Salita?"

He has basically been protected by Bob Arum from day 1, Arum of course seeing a good marketing opportunity re. the Orthodox Jew angle and making sure that Salita doesn't ever have to have a hard fight all the way to the top. He was a New York Golden Gloves champion and learned his trade on the city's tough amateur circuit so he's obviously got ability - he should have built on that but has completely lost his way.
Now he's got to go back and rebuild, but fight tough fighters instead of back to the usual sub-standard opposition. Now we'll see if he really wants to be world champion.

Fana is actually a half decent fighter who has beaten Ali Funeka and Malcolm Klassen.
