Live fights before the main event on Friday fight night, and the 9pm start, are excellent- a better time to start the show, and a better way to show the action.

:TU:

But please, lets see some credible opponents and match ups.

:OhYes:

Embarrasingly bad opponents for Price and Jeffries though. Hope Sky have a word with Maloney for this.

I agree with you. I'd hate to see them abandon the idea just because tonight's live undercard has been shocking.

I get the feeling Frank is as disapointed as us at the opposition tonight, thats the difference between warren and maloney, i get the feeling maloney wants to and will find better opponents and is even slightly embarrassed himself.

However the format has been brilliant.

Perhaps- but their records are here and clear to see.

As former Olympians, they do deserve better opponents.

What about the main fight? Maybe it's my issue, but I just had no interest in watching it whatsoever.

Pricey's opponent had won more than lost (i think).

Well, 3-2, with two of those victories being against the same guy.

Yes, but it's boxing at a very very low level -similar in terms of quality to one of our unlicenced bouts in a room above a Blackpool pub (for example).

I am very sorry to all you boxing fans for the quality of Friday nights opponents if i had knowing there where that bad there no way we would have used them. We will not use Lavin opponents any more unless we can stand up their records. As for the title fight this was oder by the BBBof C.I have to take the full blame for the 3 opponents as i have the final word, all the boxers can do is go out there and fight who in front of them.

Top Post from Mr Maloney!!! :TU: :TU:

Its good and very humbling to see a promoter admit to a couple of errors of judgement concerning opponents - having said that its bloody tough get the right opponent for the right stage of a promising fighters career.

Very refreshing to see a promoter listen to the fans and respond too.

Very refreshing indeed.

Thank you for addressing our concerns Frank, and so quick too. :TU:

Yup, always nice to see a Promoter take the time to, at least, listen.

I would just like to add, in support of Frank and the other Promotors on the Sky platform, that Sky too have to take of share of the blame.
They have cut and cut the finances over the years.
The amount they pay a Promotor is significantly down on years past.
A budget is a budget.
These guys are business people as well as Boxing people.
They can't run shows at a loss - ot at least that has to be the aim.
By restricting the TV revenue, they have reduced the budget.
If you reduce the budget something has to give - often the purse available to the boxers.
Reduce the purse and what do you get ?
Well a quality of fighter that befits the budget.
Credit to Frank. He had no obligation to offer an excuse.
As for the top of the bill, Frank is right to say if the BBB of C sort the mandatory, he has to stage the fight.

You can not blame the board if two fighters turn up and refuse to FIGHT! Last night's fight ON PAPER looked great. The build up was good, the banter and trash talk pointed to a bit of a war. What we in fact got was a bloody awful wrestling match. I will admit the ref did not help but again he can only officiate what is put in front of him.

As for the budget of sky, I go to many many smaller shows where the only budget they have is ticket sales. Mostly the fights are very competitive and the boxers get far less of a purse than the lads last night. I do not accept the purse as an excuse. You do your research and get known fighters that will test your lads. The 3 lads that turned up last night were not fighters, what did the lads learn from their opposition last night - Nothing...

Frank

There are many UK fighters you could have used last night to test your fighters, I do admire you popping on here and trying to explain your reasons but you know better than any of us that fights like this only bring the sport down and give T.V executives more excuses not to fund the fight game going forward.

Taffy,
I wasn't blaming the Board mate, just clarifying that the match up was not one that Frank set up, but a mandatory ordered fight.
Nothing more, nothing less.
The old Promotor's dilemma - great fight on paper ..........
I also respect the points you make about competitive match ups - the purse point was not made as an excuse.
I think you will see from my post I'm not exonorating Frank, merely stating that Sky also contributed.
Sky now demand a Championship fight as the bill header for every show at a time when the fee has been cut by at least 50%.
It's not for me to respond on Frank's behalf, but he may take issue with you that there were several UK fighters that would have taken the fight - or been in a position to take the fight, considering Promotional ties - at the purse available.
We'll never know - but I wonder who the three UK fighters were, mentioned in an earlier post ?
I'm not campaigning on behalf of the Promotor mate, and to be fair to Frank he's stuck his hands up, but I maintain that Sky have contributed.
They want the quality of their product to increase and increase at a time they are willing to pay less and less.

We continue to watch because that is what boxing fans do. However, there is no chance of attracting a single fan with the mismatches that have ruined the sport during the last ten years - I grew up thinking that Duff and co were bad, but ten years of Eastern European doughnuts is killing the sport.
The promoters need to realise that modern fans are not as loyal or forgiving as the old school warrior fans - people want fights and they want them earlier in a boxer's career. Warren got it right with the Olympians in Newcastle and hopefully they will not go back to fighting Latvians/Bulgarians/Ukrainians.
Wigan recently refunded their travelling fans after a massacre...how long before a fighter like Price has to do the same thing?
I think 2010 will be a crucial year - the press will stick with Haye, Khan, Froch and Pacman and the other 500 odd boxers in Britain, including some great talents, will fall even further under the radar. The fans, if promoters are not careful, will vanish under the radar too because the time has come for competition.
Why do people think that Prizefighter gets such brilliant viewing figures? It's because it is competitive and that is really what all sports fans want.
Why do people think that thousands each week attend the 'other' type of boxing shows, the ones that operate quite legally but not under BBBofC rules? Competition is the simple answer.
Adios.
