Am in the market for a new pair of gloves, just for training on bags & pads.

I'm not looking to spend hundreds on a pair of goatskin Reyes, just something comfortable and durable will do.

Previously I've had a pair of cheapo Protec 12oz, which were great, fitted perfect and cushioned well. I've also tried some Everlast which I found to be a funny, not-natural fist, shape. Ditto for a pair of Twins I got from Ebay, didn't feel comfortable at all.

Anyway, just wondering if any experts out there could help me out in narrowing down the selection a bit..

- what weight would you recommend, for bags/pads? (12oz, etc?)

- any particular brands come highly recommended?

- any particular brands to avoid?

The best gloves going are Winning for my liking followed by Cleto Reyes, then Grant!

But if you want something cheapish and decent try Geezers Palace, i've had a few pairs of them and they seemed to be pretty decent!
They do a fair few designs which are similar to Reyes and Grants!

i BOUGHT SOME bbe 16oz gloves from eBay for £20 which were fine. Personally wouldn't go below that for bags and pads.

A couple of mates swear by J-Mos VIP brand.

I'm saving up for Hyabusa's which are supposed to be Reyes quality for less wallet damage.

Gloves to be honest come down to how you feel with them.
What's good for Emerson may be shite for Tyrone, for instance.
However I would always go with the adage "you only get what you pay for"
There are no shortcuts with gloves mate.

Bag - bag mitts protect the hands better.

Sparring - grants are great but they hurt the wallet, everlast are meant to be terrible unless you buy the professional ones were are supposed to be decent, Cleto's are suppose to be very good aswell. I have Fairtex's and I like them and would recommend them. 16oz is the minimum weight you should be using for sparring and pad work.

I bought 14oz Reyes 15 years ago, still use them regularly(bag included) and they are still like new. They are prob cheaper now, cost me 130 quid then. Normally your 40 quid ones will give you 2 years maximum, Reyes are for life. If you are half serious about training the more expensive one pay for themselves over time, feel great and protect your hands.

the pug brand are the same as reyes ( copied) but cheaper just google pug athletic

Winning are by far the best, then cleto reyes. If you're able to order from the states Ringside are good gloves for their price.

Custley there like a cheap Cleto Reyes and quite cheap plus durable and comfy

lemarrs 14oz and pug16oz, reyes overated and too expensive

Reyes are fantastic gloves IMO and keep their shape.

I have 12 oz and 16 oz VIP gloves. had them about 4 years, never had a problem with them.

Not sure what gloves to best recommend but i can tell you which one's not to buy.......Don't buy Lonsdale gloves and don't buy from sportsdirect.com either!

I bought a pair of 12 oz Fight Gloves, that claimed on the packaging were suitable for regular boxers who require a high performance gloves for intensive training. They are on permanent offer at 70% off from £44.99 to £13.49. Seems a good deal but the gloves are utterly t*ss.

They literally fell apart after the 4th time of use, both gloves opening up....so we're talking after no more than 48 rounds on the bags. And when i took them back and tried to get an exchange Sportdirect.com refused as i'd not kept my receipt(which i'd thrown after the gloves were ok after the first gym session) Apparently i should keep the receipt indefinetly!

I also emailed Lonsdale and they didn't even have the common courteousy to reply. The gloves are made in India now and are obviously just mass produced crap.

So i'd steer away from Lonsdale products if i were you.

Ringside gloves are good too

Winning, I've a pair for four years and they great. Expensive though.

I`ve had a set of McGurk bag gloves for the last couple years. Very well made and the padding has stayed on the knuckle very well. They were not the cheapest in the McGurk range - I think I paid about £30-40 - its best to pay a bit more if you want them to last longer than a couple months.

Recently been doing different bag work and have been using the lonsdale fingerless bag mitts .. so far pretty good.

was gonna start a new thread but might aswell dig this one back up..so Im led to believe the Cleto Reyes are the classic punchers glove and grants are the hand protectors but some also say the glove makes no difference its all if your are a puncher you are a puncher and the glove is not going to add any more power or "solidity" rather, to a punch.

are there any new brand of gloves which are considered more of a punchers glove in the modern day and why is it that the biggest punchers p4p in the world today dont use the Reyes glove?i could be totally wrong but golovkin and kovalev use grant gloves dont they?

Well OP, if you bought, used and liked the 12oz Protec why not buy another pair?
I like Reyes myself but the people posting that Reyes last forever must never actually hit a bag or pad with them, 18 months or so is about right with regular use and perfectly good value.

I must have tried and tested nearly every glove on the market by now and now go back to Reyes each time I need gloves. Like someone else has said, they dont last forever but they do have a good lifespan.

For me.... (If I never had a budget)
Soft Bags: 8oz Reyes (Velcro)
Harder bags or pads: 10, 12 oz Reyes
Sparring: 16oz Winning

More realistically:
Pads and Bags: 12oz reyes
Sparring: 16oz fighting sports

I didnt like Grant gloves even although they look great as I always hurt my thumb in them which never happened with any other gloves. I dont like Winning gloves in smaller sizes, having only tried velcro fasteners of this brand i dont find that they feel comfortable or snug around the wrist. Reyes gloves in smaller sizes are fantastic, especially 8oz but they are only really useable on really soft bags due to the very little hand protection offered. As the Reyes go up in weight I gradually begin to dislike them more and more to the point that I sold my old 16oz Reyes sparring gloves after only wearing them a few times. I found they went too far up my fore arms compared to other gloves. I have tried someone elses 16oz wining gloves which I liked but my own 16oz gloves are a brand called fighting sports which are amazing gloves. I have never tried fighting sports in smaller sizes but would be pretty confident in saying that they would be good. Rival gloves in 10/12oz are also really good, there is however a huge difference in quality between their cheaper and more expensive gloves.

Like others have said, you get what you pay for.
Maybe go into a shop and try various gloves with your handwraps on. I have learned the hard and expensive way that one brand of gloves isnt perfect for all.
