That's an exaggeration, Ted. In Britain alone I'd say he achieved more than Alex Arthur, Silky Jones, Nicky Cook, Glenn McCrory, even Herbie Hide who is more famous due to being a heavyweight, but look at his world title record more closely...

So if he's not even top 5 worst world champ from the UK, he wouldn't even be close in international terms. Santana, as the OP suggested, must be THE absolute worst.

x3, Luis Santana may have won the title in pretty wrong circumstances, but he was a much better fighter than Carlos Maussa.

Add French human punching bag Hacine Cherifi to that list, for some reason he managed to get a decision over Keith Holmes

Good call.

Despite a glittering amateur career - he just couldn't muster it.

Personally a lot of these unheralded people who get a title for 1 or 2 fights, then lose it again dont really count in my book, despite being technically world champions.

Amir Khan, he beat the man who Khan claimed was the worst world champ around.

Gavin Rees.

He is a decent domestic fighter and should be a lightweight or maybe even super-feather but the fact he was WBA champ at light welter is crazy.

x2 - the man was a fornicating embarrassment.

Maussa and Urango were pretty terrible. Michael Bennt was shocking.

I see Michael Bennt's name on here a couple of times, but seeing as he went to a champions backyard and beat him inside a round i wouldn't call him a bad champion.

Ok so he lost to Herbie, but because of injuries suffered in that bout he never boxed again.
So we didn't get to see if he could of come back into a championship level again.

Ottke? why? he defended like 20 times. He got 2 controversial wins but he KOed Mundine, beat Byron Mitchell fair and square, beat Brewer, and lots of others. He would have lost to Kessler and Calzaghe, but in no case he was the worst champion.

Strong case could be made. Sledon is best remembered for the way he lost to Tyson! However, I do feel that is exagerrated some-what. The first Knock-down was hardly anything, but Seldon clearly gets hit cleanly with a left hook for the second knock-down!

Maybe he could & should have put up more of a fight but he was hit cleanly so the second knock-down was conclusive!
