Brian Magee faces...who?
Brian Magee faces...who?
First we were told it was Glenn Catley challenging Brian Magee for the IBO title on October 4 in Belfast, then Canada's Syd Vanderpool.
I think we all knew those fights were never going to happen.
Sure enough, Magee now faces an unknown Argie by the name of Omar Gonzalez, who outpointed a 47-year-old Roberto Duran in 1999, but was stopped in six by Mads Larsen a couple of fights later in Denmark.
Since the turn of the new century, he's boxed five times, two of them losses.
I think we all know this fight is definitely going to happen.

Marking time fight for Brian.
Depsite his realtively few professional engagements it is time he steps up the level of competition, he has the requisite skills.
This kind of unknown argie is going to do his career no good. Glenn Catley would have told us the most about Magee's future. Vanderpol would have made for an ugly maul fest.
I hope the opponent is changed for a third time.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but Vargas fought the older brother FITZ VanderpoolDIRT SUGAR wrote:I had to LMAO when I saw Vanderpoorexcuseforafighter's 'open letter' calling out Joe Calzaghe, when he had performed so miserably against Vargas. The guy's nothing better than an average European title challenger.
It would have been kind of weird to call out Calzaghe, after just being blown out at light middle
SYD Vanderpool is 34-2, one loss coming on the hands of Hopkins on points. His problem is his inactivity.

Whaaat! Matchroom match him tough against Thysse last time out, then talk of a biggie next (shades of Ricky Hatton), and now he might be fighting a man who had to plead for a fight with Matt Macklin in the Boxing News.TerribleTerry wrote:I am now hearing that Andrew Facey, originally planned to fight LIGHT MIDDLE Macklin, is being offered as a sacficial lamb to Magee.
If this is true it stinks.
I know how Bob Arum feels.

Facey suffered a broken jaw against Hague. He deserves some kind of crack for beating Gilbert Eastman last time out and snapping the unbeaten run of Matthew Tait, but it's a long way down the potential challengers list from Syd Vanderpool to Andrew Facey.Dutch Windmill wrote:I saw Facey getting blown out by Damon Hague. His hands-down defense and so-so chin are a bad combination. He got some skills though.
He's a natural middle, this fight would prove shit for Magee
I'm a bit disappointed, both Catley and Vanderpool would have been excellent fights.
Sorry to disagree.
Omar Gonzalez is far from unknown outside of England.
From what I've seen of him on tape, he would be an even bet to beat Catley.
I would also give him a good chance against Vanderpool.
One of his recent losses is a disqualification, which he later reversed.
The other was to the German bright prospect Jürgen Brähmer, who could possibly inherit the 168lb title from Ottke.

Looks like he was too dangerous for Magee as well.Blue wrote:Sorry to disagree.![]()

Well Magee did fight former WBO titlist Miguel Jimenez, and managed to drop him, something that guy(Italo-Welshman, he slaps a bit with his punches, forgot his name)
I have Gonzalez' fights with Mads Larsen and Brähmer. He's a tough sob, but more the kind of guy that gives you a very good fight, but does not pull of the upset.
As for Brähmer, he´s serving 2.5 years since October last year, so will be out in early 2005 at the latest, maybe earlier if he conducts himself well behind bars. He can really make some noise in the division, but everytime he racked up a couple of good wins he got in trouble with the law again.
Though I liked what i've seen of him. Anyway more talented than Haussler and Veit together

Why is Brahmer continually getting in trouble with the law?Dutch Windmill wrote:Well Magee did fight former WBO titlist Miguel Jimenez, and managed to drop him, something that guy(Italo-Welshman, he slaps a bit with his punches, forgot his name)

Jesus! Brahmer joins the list of 'Who needs him in your rear view mirror', along with Jack Johnson, Salvador Sanchez, Mike Tyson (although he might offer you his car), and Leon Spinks.Dutch Windmill wrote:He's currently doing time in jail for a road rage incident. I felt that Magee's handler's decision to bottle the Brian Barbosa fight said more about the TRUE measure of Magee than ANY of his mediocre showings before and after.
Seeing what that great lump Dodson did with Barbosa, really showed me how little faith they must have in Magee.
Technically - he has enough skills to progress.
Ambition?
Guts?
Heart?
Fighting Spirit?
Possible contender for the Johnny Nelson - "Fight starts in ten minutes - switch off NOW!" award IMO.

Yeah, that Barbosa situation really damaged Magee's reputation and every time they appear to be deliberating over an opponent in the future people are going to ask questions.
It's a shame because getting a win over the guy beat Starie was a good move in the right direction but this debacle has put him right back again.

If you remember, he was coming off his best win (Liendo?) before bottling the Barbosa fight.Goz wrote:Yeah, that Barbosa situation really damaged Magee's reputation and every time they appear to be deliberating over an opponent in the future people are going to ask questions.

Now he comes off the back of Jimenez and Thysse and then?................
He's doing a classic two steps forward and then three back.
