I'm tired of the cliche that every fighter winds up broke. Here's a few who did well and I'm sure we can come up with lots more. Many I list are from Florida because that's where I live and I'm more aware of their cases.

Joe Jeannette - the tough black heavyweight managed his money well. He owned real estate, a taxi cab company and a boxing gym.

Rocky Graziano- the former champ died a wealthy man. He earned a second fortune as a supporting actor. owned restaurants and real estate.

Luis Firpo- The Wild Bull built up a cattle empire worth millions and owned big chunks of commercial real estate.

Max Schmeling- retired as top executive of Coca-Cola in Germany.

Marvin Hagler- is reportedly very well off, living in Europe and making a good buck as an actor in B-action movies.

Mills Lane- The former fighter and referee became a judge.

Skeeter Mclure- The former top middleweight became a high school principal.

Randy Clark- a former heavyweight prospect owns one of the largest plastering companies in Florida.

Robert Daniels- the former Cruiser champ owns several rental properties in Florida.

Johnny Sarduy- The former bantam main eventer is worth a good dollar being one of the most prosperous drywall and popcorn contractors in Miami.

Fillo Echevarria- who fought Kid Chocolate and Freddy Miller had a good life as a sportswriter, gym owner, promoter and businessman.

Frankie Otero- the former lightweight contender is a real estate appraiser and broker and owns rental properties.

Murray Gaby- who boxed as Marty Kaplan is an advertising and public relations executive and a first rate sculptor.

Jack Brazzo- a heavyweight of long ago, he retired from the ring to enter show bizz, and did well under the acting name of Jack Palance.

Vic Andretti- the scrappy former lightweight from the British Isles has restaurant investments and properties in both England and Florida.

Mark Randazzo- retired from the ring and owns an Italian restaurant in trendy Coral Gables, as well as two hair salons.

Kenny Klingman- Former Florida middleweight is a police lieutenant in Bal Harbor.

Pedro Carrasco- the great Spanish fighter invested his money well, becoming a wealthy man and was part of the European jet set being married to Rocio Jurado, a singing star.

These are just a few to get this thread going. Let's be positive. Boxing has helped a lot of people become disciplined and provided an income and a shot at fame. Let's honor those who triumphed beyond the ring.

Harry Harris, The Human Pin, was a Broadway producer after his boxing career.

Jose Torres -journalist and author.

Nino Benvenuti- a wealthy entrepreneur.

There's a guy named Jackson who used to be a fighter who owns a chain of convenience stores in the South called "Lil Champ."

Tommy Loughran was a Wall Street sugar broker after he quit the ring.

Don't forget Ray Leonard.

Although his hero Ali isn't doing too good...

I think ingemar johansenn did very well in his post championship life.

ditto for floyd patterson.

...and archie moore.....won't say he was as rich as some mentioned here, but by no means needed any handouts.

marciano would have been set for life. loaned money at high interest rates, had some failing business ventures but not as many as successful ones, and his name and fame alone were assets. really tragic that he didn't live longer to enjoy them.

max baer did okay..ironically, ancil hoiffman set up some good annuities that high living maxie couldn't touch and would start paying off when he reached his 50th year...which...alas..is when he died. so maxie was right after all in living for the moment.

joey maxim spent some of his later years driving a taxi in florida, but never complained. said he was too early for the big gates and actually had some investments and lived decentlyand was in good health.

the beau jack story is deceiving. while he had nothing left of his purses, the fact that he ended up as a "shoe shine boy" isn't as bad as it sounds. he had a big shoe shine stand in the fontenbleu (sp) in florida and had a lot of big big tippers (biggest was frank sinatra) as his regular customers.

jersey joe walcott....i don't think he'd be called rich, but he lived well and so did his family in his post fight years.

to me, though it doesn't involve money, the George Costner story is one of the most inspiring...too long to go into here, but check back and read some threads with have a lot of information about his triumph and will power in overcoming the highest of hurdles.

Foreman sold the rights to his grill to a Japanese manufacturer-distributor and is alledged to have made 97 million on the deal. George deserves an honorary PHD in business administration from some university...

Jack O'Halloran was in a number of films including 2
Superman's.
