Deptford’s talented but erratic Anthony Small defends his British light-middleweight title against mandatory challenger and fellow Londoner Sam Webb at York Hall on March 26.
Small, who won the title by stopping Matthew Hall in eight impressive rounds last year, comes off a hugely disappointing decision over the negative Thomas McDonagh in a defence in November. McDonagh can make anyone look bad but Small looked really bad as he trudged after McDonagh for 12 sleep-inducing rounds. Interestingly, Webb had looked better outscoring the same McDonagh six months earlier and, in 16 outings, has lost only to gutsy Wisbech trier Alex Stoda on cuts back in 2006. Blooded, strong, aggressive, hardworking and often tagged ‘The Ricky Hatton of the South’, Webb holds two amateur wins over Small - in desperately close bouts - and will prove a breath of fresh air after McDonagh. The popular Webb comes to fight, he comes to win.
However, this might play right into the hands of the quick, counterpunching, much-improved Small, who prefers his opponents in his face and carries the edge in skill and power. Webb, for all his strength-sapping attacks, is not a big puncher, not the most defensive-minded fighter in the world, and one can visualize Small’s sharp counters busting up the willing challenger. Webb has a chance, if he drags the champion into the later rounds. Small tends to fade down the stretch, where he gets scrappy.
Ultimately, Small, who also holds the Commonwealth light-middleweight title, has fought at a higher level in the pros and looks to have something to prove. He forces a stoppage around the ninth round.

Face-first Webb looks perfect for Small. Who is promoting Small these days? Someone needs to get hold of him and land him a fight of substance. I'm guessing he isn't the best ticket seller.

If I remember rightly Webb beat Small in the Se Divs

Small is the better fighter now, but if he fcucks about and doesnt get down to business Webb wins.

Small has got to be 100% business keep his work tight neat and tidy and work with a cool fury.

Then he wins.

Showmanship up to the apron is fine, but once in there just fight.
