Hatton vs Marquez

I strongly believe if Hatton does fight Marquez, we'll see the Hitman with the bit between his teeth again.

Hatton is a very powerful light-welter and if it's made at 140 then I can see Marquez succumbing to Hatton's superior strength down the stretch.

Many have written Ricky off, but personally i was impressed with how he out-boxed Malignaggi.

His struggles with Southpaw's is well documented (as well as his hellish camp for Pacman).

I think if he takes care of JMM in emphatic fashion, we WONT see a Khan fight.

Personally I'd like to see Hatton vs Bradley - it would be a glood blend of styles.

I think JMM's counterpunching style is perfect to hit Hatton a LOT with. whether he can hurt the bigger man enough to beat him is another matter but i think he would stop hatton late.

Five years ago, maybe, but Hatton is not what he was, Marquez would be to good for him.

Hatton, to win well.

People go on about Hatton not being what he was, which is true, however Marquez isnt either. Marquez has looked positively rubbish in his last 3 performances and although Hatton got KO'd by Pac-Man, it wasnt a sustained beating. Quick defeats dont tend to take alot of you, when compared to long drawn out drubbings ie Mayweather - Marquez.

(2) JMM got a drubbing off PBF?

i can't say i agree mate

It's a tough fight to call, Marquez has good counter punching skills and boxing skills but Hatton has strength and aggression I think Marquez would win countering Hatton and standing with him when he needs too. Marquez has enough skill and is calm enough to wait for Hatton coming in and catching him. I see it being a close but clear points win to JMM

isn't it looking unlikely?

marquez could perhaps do something different instead of getting fat and cashing in.

how about taking his titles back to mexico, vs someone like soto, who at home is more popular than marquez? some different approach, perhaps.

The long drawn out drubbing vs Mayweather highlighted Hattons limitations, he could not get one single clean shot off during the whole ten rounds.

The manner of the PacMan defeat spoke volumes, Hatton was way in over his head and got pounded from start to finish. Very few fighters will fear him these days.

im split on this fight. I dont want to see ricky continue his career, but on the otherhand, i would love to see marquez live.
If it did happen, i think marquez on points.

I think Hatton is a shot fighter, that makes ANY future fight very risky as his punch resistance has waned and the years of making weight then going on piss-ups has caught up with him, like we all said it would. If Marquez is still at the races and not too damaged off the Mayweather schooling then I think he will KO Ricky and end his career for good.

If the fight was 3 years ago - I wouldnt have given Marquez a chance.

Ricky has now been beaten badly twice - that will give any opponent confidence - yes yes I know those defeats were against amazing opposition - but even before those fights I honestly thought Ricky was going through the early stages of being a tadge weakened with regards to taking shots. No matter how good Ricky Hatton was he always took some shots coming in to work on the opponents body - he simply shook those shots off - Marquez is no mug and definitely likes a rumble - therein is my worry for Ricky Hatton.

A close fight at this stage - but the more I think of it the more I think the Mexican can win - of course on the strict condition he comes with ambition and wants to win instead of having one eye on the bank balance due to the inevitable impressive purse he will pick up.

The consequences of a Hatton loss if the fight were to happen are quite alarming !!!

A fighter of Marquez's quality always stood a chance. I think there is less left in his tank than Hatton's. Older - been through more wars. Hatton looked exceptional against Malignaggi.

Marquez has the skills to make Hatton look a little silly, always has. Question is, will he be able to sustain it against the bigger man.

Hatton can't hold a shot anymore. If this fight happens I think it would be better at a catchweight of 144. I don't think Hatton makes 140lb in a healthy manner anymore and has left some on the scales in recent bouts. At 144 he has a better chance of holding a few shots before being dropped. Marquez is a solid fighter who will land counter shots on Hatton and when he does he will hurt him. If Hatton could hold a shot he would be way to strong for Marquez and win an easy decision, but he can't, especailly at 140, at 144 it might be interesting though.

Recent BOUTS?

He was brilliant two fights ago.

His peformance against Malignaggi has nothing to do with his ability to take a shot. He didn't have to take a shot against Malignaggi. See what happens when Lazcano lands a clean punch on him, or Pacquiao, or Mayweather, or Collazo, or Urango. I didn't say he didn't look good against Malignaggi I said he can't hold a shot anymore. Pointing to the Malignaggi bout really doesn't mean much with regads to punch resistance.

x2. JMM is a highly skilled technician who is always willing to come through rough patches and dig in hard. I cant see Ricky beating him at his age, esp. after the KO losses and well documented boozy lifestyle between fights.

Ricky Hatton and his team in my view are taking the biggest gamble of his career thus far in my view by a long way.

Many people still view him as a fabulous boxer who has done incredibly well for himself and British Boxing - I certainly am in that section!!!

However - if he comes back - naturally the media will jump on it big time and there will be a huge fuss - but if he fights anyone decent I fear he will lose and then watch the media and public turn - we are a fickle lot.

Ricky has done so fantastically well - leave it just there.

Having re-watched both fights, I have to still stick by my original assesment. He looked poor against Diaz and was in trouble before turning it around and as for the Mayweather fight, he looked, slow , old and was subject to a beating. You cant, in honestly, say that the Mayweather fight was in anyway competitive, surely?

Just cant see the Marquez, who has showed up in his last few fights doing anything in this one. But I might be wrong :)

As CheckHook wrote above, the contracted weight will be key to the outcome of this fight. At 147, Hatton might be competitive. At 140, JMM will punish him and stop him late. As I've said since the Pac fight, though, I would prefer never to see Hatton in a boxing ring again.

Whilst I think the "weight" at which the fight is contracted at is worthy of discussion - however its Ricky's ability to take a decent shot which I am worried about.

I want Ricky to win - for me he is still the biggest name in boxing - I have consistently stated he has done fabuously well for himself and the sport in this county - but there is a "time" to walk away and for me that time for Ricky Hatton is now and he should concentrate on being a promoter which I think he will also succeed at.

well, i disagree he looked poor vs Diaz. he came under immense pressure from someone who is proficient at putting pressure on, fired back and gradually took over the fight.

and no i wouldn't say mayweather - jmm was competitive, nor did I. i just don't think that automatically makes it a 'drubbing', to me a drubbing = a fighter getting beaten so badly it should end his career or close to it.
