Unlicenced, sounds well dodgy. I've seen highlights of these type of shows, hell; they kick, bite, elbow the lot. Is it the type of show that Lenny McClean and Roy Shaw were involved in, run by gangsters like Joey Pyle.

Most of these shows are decent enough, there are plenty of white collar/semi pro bouts about and the unlicensed tag is just a name thrown about by detractors. Joe Pyle's promotions are actually excellent and are normally good matches where the rules are strictly adhered too. Steve Holdsworth referees them and Floyd Havard has recently been fighting on them, check them out on you tube.

Nah I dont think there are those kind of fights. They are proper boxing matches but not sanctioned by the BBBoC.
Back in August he fought a pre op transsexual called Rob Newbiggin and the MEN reporter James Robson gave it a lot of coverage and didn't seem to make the distinction between licensed and unlicensed.
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ ... kable_bout
Then I was walking around Ancoats about a month ago and saw a poster in a office window saying that he was having another fight again in the The Ritz Nightclub but I was only passing and didn't catch all the details.
And now this one up in Jeff T's territory!
Fair enough I don't pay Mr. Armstrong's bills and if he can earn a quick bit of cash beatin some bums then crack on but no matter how big a supporter of Gomez I am/have been you still wouldn't catch me going to something like this.

That is a pretty out dated view as far as I can tell/
As Coco says, Floyd Havard has been boxing recently on Joey Pyle Jnr's shows.
Whilst the boxing on display is fairly 'clean' in terms of adhering to the rules, the match making can be lax, to say the least.
In his latest fight former British champ and World title challenger Floyd Havard faced Walsall's Gary Groves, who as a pro only registered one win out of 11 contests.
The outcome was only to be expected:

For all their failings, the BBBofC would have never allowed this mis match to take place.
Still, cant blame the ex pros for looking to make some money...

Pre-op, I'd throw low blows on this freak, it's not as if he'll complain; since his intention is to lose his tackle. Newbiggin!

Nobiggin more like!

Havard, though he was facing a punchbag, looked pretty good. His jab was well sharp. I thought he was older than he is - he's 'only' 44, similar age to Hopkins - I remember him when I was young, though I think he retired early.
At least he's in good shape.

That is the Gomez vs pre op tranny fight. Gomez looks terrible. The tranny also has a bizarre tattooed corn roll look 'hair-cut'. Only in boxing. You couldn't make this stuff up.......

What are the medical facilities like? It's OK saying these shows are decent, but what if someone gets injured? And are these guys passed fit to box? Or is it just a situation that these a more or less public sparring sessions?

I put on white collar shows in north notts , so i can say that on my shows at least medical facilities are fine , although i can answer for everyone of course , i have a team of paramedics with full equipment , my mc is a rapid response qualified former police officer , i also have a few first aiders to look after the crowd in case anyone trips etc , and to keep the first aiders sharp they check all the boxers over after each fight and then alert the paramedics if they feel anyone needs attention , as happened in my last show when a guy broke his hand badly in the first fight of the night , which was part of a round robin tournament , so that fucked that up .
![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
, all fighters have a medical as they arrive at the venue , of course only the obviuos questionaire , weigh ins etc , some organisations say there looking at bringing in brain scan for pre fight medicals but we will wait and see on that , i personally had to ref the last show too as my ref pulled out a few hours before the show , and in a way gave me a bit of peice of mind as i knew id stop anyone who looked like they was done , wheras on some shows i always worry if the ref will stop it early enough if the need arrives , but the broken hand is the worst anyones been injured on any of my first 4 shows and ive not seen anyone hurt on any other shows ive been to with my fighters , ive very rarely seen any crowd trouble and my next one will be the first time i use proper doormen rather than just having girls collecting the tickets on the doors , and that is because im told someone threw a bottle during the last show , which due to me reffing i didnt see , i like to walk around the venue and talk to the public etc , if your nice with them they generally have the courtesy to be nice back , but im under no illusion that an idiot will appear at some point so proper security on next one . as far as gomez , any white collar promotor would get him fights if he asked as theyd see him as a cash cow if hes a good ticket seller , plus to have ex pros on a show gives that little more respect to your show , boosting your rep etc . , i have a former junior golden gloves champion on my books that never boxed after he left school but then started again with me at 28 years old , he wants to have a few fights then go pro , having him on my stable will be good for business for both him and me as hes a known calibre boxer locally . im probably just rambling on now so ill shut up , i was only meant to be answering a question about safety .

Speaking of unlicenced, the website: lennymcleandvd.co.uk , is selling fights between him and Roy Shaw. Has anyone here bought them, if so; are they good quality and worth the money.

Blackpool offers plenty of unlicenced boxing every Friday and Saturday night - outside The Tower.
