Just wanting some opinions on his record?

He was an extremely resourceful, and capable fighter, who dominated a very good field of fighters. He sported an unusual cross-arm defence and exerted a steady draining pressure on his opponents. He wasnt an enormous hitter [despite his record], and took fighters apart with careful accurate punches. I dont believe he was unbeatable at any point in his career though, as he displayed much the same ability throughout.

Archie Moore was an incredible fighter, one of the best of all time. He had power, speed, boxing ability, good game plans, and he was an excellent finisher. He also had loads of heart.

If you put a search engine with Archie's name you can probably dowload a lot of articles and data on his career. I do it often and it works for the lesser known lights. I ran a search engine on Fred Askew and found he's even run for office in his home turf. Try a search engine on Archie.

You don't think Moore was an enormous hitter?!

did archie fight in australia because of world war two?
it seems odd because basically all of his early fights were in the united states.
i am sure someone here can fill me in on this subject.

Archie Moore always claimed that he learned the secret to weight loss from a native Australian medicine man. But, of course, with Archie everything had to be taken with a bit of skepticism.

He returned to San Diego from Australia before the war with Japan started.

Enrique, it might interest you to know that Archie Moore ran for the San Diego City Council in the early 1960´s.

i don't mean to be picky here, but he fought in australia in 1940 and ww2 started in 1939 and went to 1945.

i think that bit about the aboriginal eating technique may well be true.

traditional aboriginals were very resourceful regards their diets.

i am correct too.
world war two went from 1939 to 1945.
just because america wasn't involved doesn't mean i am wrong.
in any encyclopaedia it will say 1939 to 1945.

anyway i am australian how much do you know about australian history?

yes i am aware archie moore was an american.

but i dont know anything about american history as i am not american so therefore i assumed that what was meant was that ww2 started in 1941 which it did not.

i obviously misinterpreted the previous comments, so don't worry about my ramblings.

I think he was a great hitter in the sense that he could systematically break up a fighter with well timed blows, but as a lightheavyweight he didnt have the raw one-punch power of say a bob foster, or even a michael spinks.

Ole Archie always claimed to have been born in 1916 while his mother cited 1913 as the date. The earlier date makes sense if its true that Mickey Walker sparred with or saw Archie sparring in the late twenties.
Either way Moore was undoubtedly one of the all time greats ...during the forties he fought everyone from middle to heavyweight, including many that others wouldn't face such as Eddie Booker, Jimmy Bivins, Holman Williams, Ezzard Charles and Harold Johnson. As late as 1962 Archie managed to get a draw with Willie Pastrano ....who 13 months later beat Harold Johnson for the lightheavy title. Archie always said that he thought he may have beaten Marciano if he had come into the fight a little lighter.
When you consider that Moore was either 39 or 42 when he fought Rocky his performance seems pretty awesome.

Something about Archie Moore that has been lost in time is that he was the first boxer to wear the longer style trunks. For better or worse, his trunks often came several inches below his knees....and this was in the late 1950´s.
