Let's Get Behind Frank Maloney to KO Nick Griffin

I guess most of you will know by now, but boxing promoter and friend of Boxrec's British forum is standing against Nick Griffin for the Barking seat in the next general election.
Frank is standing as the UKIP's candidate.
The BNP was only 27 votes away from finishing second in the seat last time out, but I reckon that Frank's just the sort of fella who could eat away at their vote.
http://j.mp/7MSbpi
Let's all give Frank our support, and hope he can deliver a knockout blow to the odious BNP and their snarling supporters.

Given that Nick Griffin is a Member of the European Parliament, surely he won't be allowed to stand as candiadte for the seat?
No-one else seems to do that.
Why, it's almost like a boxer getting a fight scheduled and signed and then pulling out of it late on to take a more lucrative fight.....
MEPs earn about £100 000 . Thats our taxes, of course- so why it acceptable for them to abandon the job?

Well, if he became MP for Barking, he would walk out on his MEP seat, so there would be no conflict of interest.
However, he became an MEP for some seat in the North West, and I think that they have every right to feel aggrieved that he's fighting for a seat in London when he should be representing their interests in Europe.
Meantime, the people of Barnet should ask how much he actually cares for their interests when he has no connection with the area and is representing in Europe an area hundreds of miles away.
Lenny wrote:God help Barking if these two are leading candidates to choose from?
No, all the major parties will provide candidates, too. The incumbent is Labour MP Margaret Hodge. I don't know who'll run for the Tories or Lib Dems. But given that the BNP finished in third, only 27 votes behind the Tories in second, and that Hodge was one of the MPs caught up in the expenses scandal, and that the BNP has become more popular over the last five years, you have to think that Griffin has parachuted in because he thinks he has a genuine chance of winning.

Oh I get that Carbo, but lets not pin our hopes on Frank Maloney, who when it comes to politics, is a very good boxing promoter

Well, that's fair enough, but at least Frank has the bottle to take him on.
Frank's generally -- I think we can all agree, whatever we think of his politics -- a top fella; Nick Griffin, we should all agree, is an odious little troll.
So, to paraphrase Chambers, COME ON FRANK!

Is Maloney only running to help try to stop the BNP getting a seat in parliament?
Or does he actually have a chance of winning?
Would he have a better chance of winning in another area?

Here is the result from Last years Euro Elections:
Barking and Dagenham
The Labour Party = 11,236 votes
British National Party = 6,941 votes
United Kingdom Independence Party = 5,285 votes
Conservative Party = 4,961 votes
Christian Party 'Proclaiming Christ's Lordship' = 1,759 votes
Liberal Democrats = 1,645 votes
The Green Party = 1,354 votes
English Democrats Party = 706 votes
No2EU: Yes To Democracy = 451 votes
Jan Jananayagam = 386 votes
Socialist Labour Party = 386 votes
Pro Democracy: Libertas.eu = 120 votes
Jury Team = 100 votes
The Socialist Party of Great Britain = 99 votes
Steven Cheung = 88 votes
Sohale Rahman = 66 votes
Yes 2 Europe = 53 votes
Haroon Saad = 36 votes
Gene Alcantara = 29 votes
Given that people are MORE likely to vote for UKIP, BNP etc in the Euro elections (or equally, more people are likely to vote for a main party Red or Blue, in a general election) it would be a MASSIVE surprise if Labour failed to win this.
Take into account that Labour we at their lowest in popularity in that Euro election, and there was also an element of "protest vote" and the nature of the ballot was proportional Representation, all this points to a clear Labour win in Barking.
What WILL be significant is BNP V UKIP head to head.
Here was Barking 2005
Hodge, Margaret
Labour Party = 13,826 votes. Elected
Prince, Keith
Conservative Party = 4,943 votes
Barnbrook, Richard
British National Party = 4,916 votes
Wickenden, Toby
Liberal Democrat Party = 3,211 votes
Jones, Terry
UK Independence Party = 803 votes Cleeland, Laurie
Green Party = 618 votes
Panton, Demetrious
Independent = 530 votes
Saxby, Mick
Workers' Revolutionary = 59 votes
1997
Hodge, Margaret Eve
Labour Party =
21,698 votes. Elected
Langford, Keith R
Conservative Party = 5,802 votes
Marsh, Mark J. P
Liberal Democrat Party = 3,128 votes
Taylor, Colin E
The Referendum Party = 1,283 votes
Tolman, Mark
British National Party = 894 votes
Mearns, Damien F
Pro Life Alliance = 159 votes

This is general question. Given the BNP were just some 27 votes away from finishing second last time out, what does that tell us?

Yes, but they were an absolute mile off finishing first, the only position that matters.
Information is above.

Do you think if either the UKIP or the BNP dropped out the other party might have a reasonable outside chance of winning, or at least making it somewhat close?

Not a good idea, just gives publicity to a plank in NG.
Hopefully the people have enough sense to NOT vote for the BNP.
Bloody Nuisance Party!

Potentially, but I think that it's more likely that most people who vote BNP or UKIP would rather stay at home than vote for the modern Tories.
The Tories just aren't right wing enough, or Euro-sceptic enough, to gather lost UKIP voters, who view the Cameron Conservatives as Tony Blair in disguise.
The BNP aren't really right wing as such. If you read their manifesto (and please do read it, because it's genuinely, and hilariously, bad), it calls for import and export tariffs, the renationalisation of many industries, British ownership of the rest, and a stated goal of full employment. Now, while export and import tariffs aren't necessarily the sole property of the Left, seizing the economy's commanding heights to put the means of production back in the hands of British workers, and aiming for full employment, certainly are.
Of course, fascism is a notoriously slippery ideology to pin as left or right, because it often takes policies from the extreme end of either spectrum, and different fascist parties have vastly differing policies -- comparing the Nazis and the Falangists of Spain and you will see very different ideas -- but ours, the BNP, is a left wing party with a sprinkling of nasty racism and xenophobia mixed in, which is why it picks up the old Labour working class which has been disenfranchised by Labour's shift to the economic centre, and is too fcuking pig ignorant to know any better than to accept racist ideas as some kind of solution to their crushing poverty.
And I can't see the Tories picking up any of those.
More realistically, Labour will regain the seat, but with a vastly reduced majority, Maybe down to 9,500 and second place will be a four-way race between the Lib Dems, Tories, BNP and UKIP.

So, Labour is going to win this seat and none of the others stand a chance?
If this is the case then does any of this Maloney vs Griffin stuff really matter?

No.
Looking at the election figures, it would appear that this is a clear cut victory for Labour all the way.
If the UKIP or BNP were to drop out, I feel the the votes "lost" by them would in essence be split between Labour and Conservative, or perhaps not cast at all.
There WILL be some "traditional" Labour seats that go to the Tory party, but Barking won't be one of them.

Yes.
Its not, realistically, a question of BNP winning, it's a question of the ammount of support they get- or fail to get.
If UKIP can present a clear political message that appeals to the electorate, then they will gain support.
Essentially, a strong support for UKIP and Maloney will send out a clear message - both to Labour and the BNP (and to the Tories too, of course) that people favour the UKIP agenda.
Likwise, if the BNP do badly, and get less votes than UKIP and the Tories, then it will be a notable defeat for Griffith and the BNP.
If, on the other hand, BNP happen to gain more votes than the Tories (who will surely win the general election as a whole) and UKIP then this is a notable victory for the BNP.

I can't see it happening. In the communities that the BNP is strong in, there are an equal number of Voters who will be against the BNP on all levels.
As such, the best method of defeating the BNP is simply to turn out and vote against them.
Add to this large blocks of traditional voters (Red and Blues), and the BNP won't have a chance.
Essentially, the BNP would only eveer get in as the result of massive voter apathy, and I don't think we would ever see that.
