The Commonwealth belt

I have been in London for the past month and I met up with a couple of posters the british board over there. I apologise if they have already posted this question but I was unable to find it.

In the UK the traditional route is English/Celtic - British - Commonwealth - Euro - World.

I tried explaining to them that Aussies do not really have a traditional route. They will go a for a state title, go for a Aussie title and then a IBF/WBO shitty regional belt. (not forgetting the OPBF belt)

The question I was unable to answer was why don't Aussies take the Commonwealth belt seriously?

EDIT: Sorry this is not a Aussie v Brit thing. It is because the Commonweath title holds a lot of clout with the big 4 organisations.

not sure but i think aussie fighters r finding it a bit easier climbing the ranks through other titles. that dosnt lessen the prestige of the commonwealth title

I imagine it has a lot to do with money and geography.

The problem with getting the Commonwealth Title is you have to go over to Britain to get it , fight their Champion with their referee as the only judge as well .
At least if we fight someone for a Regional Title on the local scene we stand a better chance of a win and also of a World Ranking.

CW titles have 3 judges.

Are they British judges or Australian judges because we have mainly Australian or New Zealand judges for our Regional Titles which gives us a better chance of a win.

If you have to fight overseas with their judges your better off fighting for a World Title just like Manny PACMAN did after he won the OPBF Title.

Asiku was the last Australian to hold a Commonwealth belt. He relinquished it.

Charles Adamu is Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champ.

"Boxrec" ranks him 110 in the World. That puts him behind at least 10 Australians.

because the commonwealth belt to em is useless people get that in britain if they cant get a british title shot and so carry that belt by beating africans. ive always reguarded iot as either a lesser english belt or and african belt

If you look at this bloke's record they might have a point, caveman. His record outside of Africa is pretty poor.

I can remember when the C/Wealth belt was huge, Fammo Vs O'brien at feather was a good example.
It's a shame really that it has little status down here.

The domestic scene highly rated English Super Middleweights over there aren't exactly beating world beaters. When we look at their records .So whats the difference if we have our Regional titles OPBF[WBC] IBF WBO and a list of other World Sanctioned bodies, as apposed to theirs being their Commonwealth title being no more highly regarded to us.

Don't get me wrong the Commonwealth Title is a good title i just wish our countries weren't so far away from each other it could be like the footy and the cricket.

Besides specific boxing politics, might it also be a factor that Aus is no longer as proud as it once was to be part of the Commonwealth? Isn't there a significant Republican mood among some?

Brute, Kevin Rudd needs you!!!

Such manipulation of statistics and twisting an arguements is a pleasure to read. You should be in politcs right now, Carberra awaits.

It looks like you have taken the effort to look up every CW champion to assess their Boxrec ranking, please do the same for the rest, then compare it to OPBF champion rankings.

I am shocked. I was brought up in boxing with the knowledge that the CW belt was a major milestone for a boxer hoping to advance to the World stage.

I can accept that our two countries are not a 1 hour flight away from each other, I feel that there is a Republican feel about some of the posts, but one thing I believe is that a Commonwealth Champion is worth double a IBF/WBO APAC champion or a OPBF champion.

Historically, and the big four rankings do not lie, the CW champion is considered a top 20 rankiing by all 4 major bodies.

There are Aussies whom I think would make major assults on this opportunity. Billy Dib is one fighter whom I think would set alight another tilt at the world stage with the CW belt.

Just asking: Would it have something to do with the emergence of Asian countries as boxing nations post-WWII. Meaning it's now cheaper and easier to get a South-Pacific or similar regional belt, thus making the CW belt a little redundant?

Just had a look at Charles Adamu's record and it apears the African dropped a pionts decision to Carl Froch in 2004 in England, what's interesting about this is it was judged solely by the ref. His last fight was also in England in wich he won the vacant title, this time with three judges.
