Racism blamed for Khan's exit (written by Kevin Mitchel)

So, Amir Khan is leaving allegedly and going to America to join Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, possibly making his American debut against the flash New Yorker Paulie Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden in April. Well blow me down with one of pit-a-pat Paulie's feather-juiced jabs – and take a bow, the boo-boys.

The move, confirmed yesterday, has much to do with the fact GBP's Richard Schaefer and Top Rank boss Bob Arum have been hanging around Hollywood like a pair of thumb-sucking talent scouts the past year, getting in the ear of Khan and his boxing guru, Freddie Roach, at the trainer's Wild Card gym.

Khan has gone with Schaefer because the smart guys at Golden Boy and their rich friends at HBO also promote David Haye in America, and have worked with Ricky Hatton. Both of the Brits are good friends of the world light-welterweight champion. One of them might yet fight him – and how neat a deal would that be for Golden Boy and HBO: Khan v Hatton in Las Vegas, with both fighters part of the promotion.

There is no escaping the fact, though, that Schaefer's job has been made easy by the small crew of British bigots who have taken against Khan, for no apparent reason other than their lack of anything resembling a brain – and I mean that collectively, because they might just be able to build one between them.

Khan has been telling us for a long time he has grown disenchanted with these people. It is why he has fallen in love with America. Over there, living quietly and comfortably in the Californian sunshine, he is accepted without question by the fans – black and white Americans, Filipinos, Mexicans, all of them. And, whatever anyone, including his father and Warren, say to the contrary, the racists here who cat-call him from the cheap seats and spill out their bile anonymously across the internet have a lot to answer for.

If these comedians hadn't waged such a disgusting campaign against a fine young man of considerable boxing skill, a shy boy who was a national hero at 17 when he came home from the Olympics with a silver medal and almost single-handedly revived amateur boxing in this country, he might have stayed. He at least might not have been so easily tempted to leave.

People who have never met him said he was full of himself, that he'd forgotten his roots. They were the ones who cheered when he was knocked on his backside by Breidis Prescott, which pretty much sums up their mindset. Those of us lucky enough to spend time with him know all this to be a nonsense. Amir Khan is probably the nicest sportsman in Britain. Except now he is leaving.

Warren will say – and, indeed, has said – that the anti-Muslim thing was blown up out of all proportion. Maybe. But Frank wasn't on the end of it.

When Khan spoke to us before the Dmitriy Salita fight about his frustrations with the punters who attacked his faith and colour, he probably did go one quote too far. For him to say he would have been a world superstar if he were white only gave ammunition to the baiters, who claimed he was arrogant. But it was a shot from the heart. There was no spin on it. Khan is that kind of man, honest and straight.

Now he really is going into the lion's den. It is a long time since a British fighter invaded America by actually going to live and fight there. Terry Downes did it. To a lesser extent, Nigel Benn and Lennox Lewis did it. Audley Harrison tried it, and bombed out. Naseem Hamed said he was going to do it, and didn't. A long time ago, the likes of Ted "Kid" Lewis and Jack "Kid" Berg did it. Now a young Anglo-Asian kid from Bolton is doing it. Wish him luck.

He will miss Warren's guidance, but he has Roach to talk to. The trainer is a pretty wise owl and he will look after Khan's chin as much as his ring career better than anyone over there I can think of.

All of this looks tough on Frank. Save your tears. He's made plenty with Khan. Besides, maybe one day Warren will get Khan back over here to fight Kell Brook. Now what a homecoming that would be.

They will be blaming racism for Khan's loss to Prescott next! Its ridiculous!

I'm not saying Khan has not suffered racial abuse, nor am I condoning it, but you can't play the race card all the time!

Kinell.... is anyone that arsed about Khan leaving the UK? We moaned for years that Hatton and Calzaghe didnt make the move to fight the best, now Amir is doing so "we" moan too.

Im glad he's gone, and the likes of Salita wont be gracing our shores again. not because Iw ant to see the back of Khan, but simply because we've a far better chance of seeing him fight in competative matches, against the best.

Oh, and if the race thing is such a big issue then Amir is in for a shock as in my very un informed opinion the good ol US of A is worse than the UK for racism and bigotry.

How about arrogance and jealousy as being major factors in the "hate" as well, sure his race and his religion(which quite frankly is just like any other religion - a load of tosh - nazi-like mind control - hate stirring and all that bollocks) are factors in it but don't forget this lad was a big star 5 years ago, has the British public turned into a bunch of bigots overnight or something?

So, to escape the racism in Britian, Khan is moving to the USA?

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

What a load of old cobblers.

Sure, I'm certain there are people out there who hate Khan because of his skin colour and they are indeed, moronic, but then again I have also heard racial insults coming from those who come out specifically to support Khan when he fights.

Whatever, Khan's real reasons for moving to the States is money, exposure and the fact he trains there.
Great move for him I think.

Amir khan is going to fight for the no.1 promotional outfit on the planet probably on hbo with arguably the best trainer in the world guiding him.He is about to realise his and every boxers wildest dreams by earning more cash than he ever could over here and headline goldenboy/hbo shows in vegas, new york etc why does racism have to play a part in his decision? If you were fighter who would you rather fight for warren or goldenboy?were would you rather live bolton or california?Rather fight in a half empty m.e.n or msg?
It was probably an easy decision to make without racism playing much part in it.

I am the wrong side of fifty and have been watching boxing for over 30 years.
With my hand firmly on my heart, I can say, without any doubt at all, that Khan's fans from his own ethnic background, and his own faith, are the most racist sect I have ever come across.
The filth and bile emanating from their mouths at times has to be heard to be believed.
My son is 15.
He has grown up around boxers all his life, and has seen the impact of a multi culteral gym first hand from tender years at Wincobank.
In 2005 he went with me and sat up close at Khan's debut.
As young as he was (11), he looked at me and rolled his eyes, listening to the garbage being spouted by the Asians - supposedly there to support Khan.
I will not even recite the topics being yelled about - let's just say f**k all to do with boxing.
Let me make it clear.
I do not defend in any way shape or form, the morons who use boxing and Khan in particular to run their own racist agenda.
Having said that I will not sit back and allow Khan to blame our racism problem for everything.
Look closer to home young man.
Not only are you escaping the racists that you allude to, unkowingly you have done yourself a great favour by separating yourself from certain elements of your own race and religion, doing the exact same thing.
Good luck to you - but please no more of this crap about why you are going.

Macho,
Khan is letting them say it, dross paper or not.
Anyway I ain't gonna post on this thread again.
If ever there was a charge of bringing the game into disrepute Khan is guilty.
My blood is boiling - Racism driving him away my arse.

Well when they cracked down on the football, the louts had to find somewhere else and I guess boxing is where they went, but to be honest it's nothing new in boxing is it? We had the infamous riot at the Minter v Hagler fight, Tony Sibsons fans were a rowdy lot I believe too and loads of others.

I think there are a minority who cheered for Prescott cause of his colour, I think there is a bigger percentage who cheered for Prescott through jelously of his earnings etc and being perceived as the "golden boy".

There's been a section waiting for him to fall since he turned pro - not to do with his skin colour. Similarly, but on a greater scale as there is with Degale.

Yeah, it's about racism and bigotry, not the fact that the guy is a complete tit. And I used to like him.

But equally a lot of the British Asian community are fans of Khan and harbour no racial prejudice- like people of any colour or creed, they just come to see him fight.

BIGMARK wrote:i dont blame Khan for leaving because what ever he does he gets a hard time. For me the hate was more to do with him being promoted by frank.w and not about the fighter himself. Yes he can come out with the odd stupid comment but for me the way he came back from what was a huge defeat deserves kudos. I feel Khan will fight anyone and those who say he is dodging fighters is having a laugh as its not him that makes the fights. I was shocked he was booed at MAB but like most i dont feel racism is behind the move but only him wanting to closer to his trainer and wanting to be the best. Yes he may of been given more press and earned more than other fighters who may of deserved more but that once again lies at the feet of his now ex promoter who did a great job promoting him with the exception of the PPV which was a Fuk up IMO.
yeah we can all support him now can't we.

fanclub applications into bigmark's spanish offices by the end of the month it is then. :OhYes:

Oh and I suppose the dollars of GBP didn't tempt him?

Khan seems to have forgotten he is the most (over-) hyped British fighter of his generation...He went PPV earlier in his career than any other british fighter...he has garnered endless press coverage far and above his achievemnets.

Kevin Mitchell is extremely pro-Khan because Khan fits the Grauniad political agenda so perfectly....

Khan should stop crying and be thankful for the amount of money he has received off the British public, as well as the frankly excellent job Allegedly has done with him....

There is more hate among Asians than there is from White British. Indians hate Pakistanis and vice versa. Most of us who dont like Khan have reasons other than race for doing so. I think when Khan had his first few fights he was very popular so what happened to change that, hes always been Asian. It has F All to do with race and culture there are other reasons that turned many fans against him.

This I completely agree with, both because it mirrors my general feelings about Amir & also it explicates what happens when normal people -- who aren't thinking in terms of PR & image & bollocks like that -- talk to a journalist.

I think that Khan is mistaking alot of the racism just for dislike.

First - there are racists - its part of life - but just because he is of a certain ethnic orgin - does not make him a special victim - white British people can be victims of racists as well.

Alot of people just dislike him - because of his cocky arrogant - love himself vibe - and the disrepect he showed solid pro fighters like Jon Thaxton - before Khan had done anything of significance as a pro.

I was watching the fight - when Presccot knocked him out - and I was with someone watching the fight in a bar - and he was throwing "w**ker" signs at the TV screen at him not because he was racist - but because he was pleased that the big head had been exposed.

Khan has rebounded well from the Presccot defeat - he took it well - and I like him a bit better after that - he matured a bit.

But Khan is just disliked because he is a big headed celebrity boxer - and people resent what he stands for.

For those who just dislike Khan because he is of a certain race - then shame on them - racism is petty and childish - hating on someone just because they are gentically different than you - pathetic.

But Khan is just milking the race card I feel.

Khan dosent help himself when he says comments like

"If I were White I would be a Superstar by now"

A ridiculous big headed comment to make - from a paper champion boxer.

that sort of thing is what these articles should be about. Speculating about the sport, potential match ups, etc.

The problem with the wankbag press is that they seem keen to do "lifestyle" angles, looking at "social factors" etc, tend to forget about the sport itself. At the end of the day, I'm a fan of boxing- I like to see boxers box each other in well made competative matches, and I'm interested in journalism that focuses on the sport itself.
