Just watching the preview show.

Bruno 18-0-0 (18)

They are looking for someone who won't fold as soon as he gets hit...

Interesting footage of Bruno sparring with Leroy Caldwell in Lawless' gym above The Royal Oak pub in Canning Town.

"My lords, ladies and gentlemen, we now come to the main and final event of the evening. This is an international heavyweight contest of 10 rounds, 3 minutes each round. Presenting from Wandsworth, London, Frank Bruno <thunderous applause> and from Chicago, in the United States, Floyd "Jumbo" Cummings."

Bruno controlled the first 2:59 of the opening round from centre ring with his left jab and the occasional right hand.

Cummings kept out of danger and every now and then launched a swinging punch to test the waters.

Right on the bell Cummings made one of these exploratory attacks with quite startling results.

The right hand landed high on Bruno's head and he was gone! There was another (glancing) right hand and then the bell rang. Jacobs the referee, got between them. Lawless flew across the ring and led the completely dis-oriented and limp as a rag doll Bruno onto his stool.

(Those fellows that come in here arguing that Bruno had a great chin and it is was only fatigue that did him in ought to have a look at this)

I'd like to see that one. I talked to a guy who fought Jumbo. He also fought Pinklon Thomas and Witherspoon. We talked a bit about Jumbo and he laughed about some sports writers who wrote that Jumbo couldn't punch. He said "anyone who thought Jumbo couldn't punch would have to think Pinklon Thomas and Tim Witherspoon couldn't punch either."

I shall get onto my scoring for this bout asap.

Got the DVD ready.

Galt,

The same experts that say men like Cummings could not punch
sit idle ringside with the comfort of never having done nor
risked a thing athletically. Yet they profess to be experts on such
matters, because they sit around agreeing with one another.

From memory, in this fight Jumbo lands some good shots, Bruno
is not the chinny princess that the UK press seem to label him at
times. I mean the lads that fell him are not exactly pillow fists now
are they ?

Round 1.

Bruno works behind the jab nice. Stalks Jumbo, who is backing away
and staying low. Occasionally he throws the big wold bomb that misses.

Last instances of the round..and boom ~!!!

Jumbo lands a shot that all but KOs or sends Bruno down. Thirty seconds
earlier and who knows ?

Bruno is on queer street, and wobbles back to his corner.

I am saying 10-10 ??

Hard one because the only thing Jumbo did was land that beauty at the
end, and it was right at the end. But the 2.59 prior was all Bruno.

It was far from fatigue that wobbled him. It certainly was a
flush, hard and disruptive to ones sensors punch that sent
Bruno into fairy mary land.

How to score that round?

I'd agree on 10-10.

Round 2.

Jumbo comes out hard, aggressive and hungry for that KO.
He lands right after right, wild and vicious, they land, but
still Frank stands. For over a minute Bruno takes Jumbo's
best, but on wobly legs, he mounts a come back, behind
a jab, his right now missing.

Jumbo finds a home for his over hand right agains in the
later stage of the round, and even thumps some left hooks
home. Bruno manages to lead behind his jab, but he is still
shell shocked.

Bruno's longest round no doubt. Good conditioning, a lot of
pride and discipline see Bruno survive this round.

10-9 Cummings ( I am tempted to make it 10-8, but Bruno
was not rocked, nor did he go down, and he did fight back
at points.)

Round 3.

Cummings looks to land the wild over hand again, but this
time Frank is more cautious and stays behind his long jab
and the occasional right or safe combination when he has
Jumbo against the ropes.

The round is all Frank. He is boxing nicely and is thumping
his shots home securely....or is he?

Bruno 10-9.

Round 4

Again it is all Bruno. Behind his jab, with the occasional right.
Jumbo is on the ropes often, he is wild and desperate. His
over hand right and the occasional leaping left are all he has,
though he lands some rights, they seem to have no effect
on Bruno now.

10-9 Bruno.

Round 2

They manage to get Bruno into some sort of shape to come out for Round 2.

Cummings throws everything but the kitchen sink but his punches don't have anything like the effect of the single right hand in the 1st. And, lots of them are missing, in his excitement to finish it.

As the round progresses you can see Bruno start to get back his senses and interestingly Cummings starts to blow a bit.

Cummings round. 10-9

Round 3

Bruno looks to be almost fully recovered.

Cummings, on the other hand, is going downhill fast! He seems to have used up whatever he had in the way of energy in the 2nd round.

Bruno is back to poking out that ramrod jab and the occasional big right hand. He's doing well for a bloke who was unconscious on his feet a few minutes ago.

Cummings mounts a couple of big swinging one-two attacks but Bruno now knows what to watch out for.

Bruno - 10-9

Round 4

Bruno is now breaking his man down behind that hard left jab.

Big Frank is still robototic, stiff-legged and with his head stationary as a nice target, but Jumbo has shot his bolt. His sporadic attacks aren't worrying Bruno at all.

Bruno - 10-9

Round 5

Cummings launches a three punch attack as the bell starts the round but the punches are too slow and crude to trouble Bruno now.

The rest of the round is all Big Frank. And not only are his punches landing with inceasing regularity, they are now starting to hurt Cummings.

Cummings has not given up; he intends to earn his pay (unlike some of the imports Bruno has faced); he gets through with one useful right hand but it has no visible effect on Bruno.

Bruno - 10-9

Round 6

New territory for Bruno.

Much the same as the previous round. Bruno pressing forward, Cummings trying to tie him up or catch him with what are, frankly, very crude shots.

Frank is getting some rounds under his belt.

Bruno - 10-9

Round 7

Just when it looked like Bruno's punching power wasn't quite as effective as had previously been suggested, he got through with his best right of the night which shook Cummings. A few seconds later he landed with an even better one and Jumbo was down and badly hurt. He got up but couldn't maintain his footing and Jacobs waved it off.

Collins, thanks for doing this thread.
Jumbos manager at the time of that fight, runs a little restaraunt about a mile from my house.
Mickey is his first name, I dont remember what he said his last name is. I dont remember him from the gyms in Chicago.
Anyway, we talked about this fight and I seem to recall him saying that he thought the ref waved it off too soon.
Ive never seen the bout. What are your thoughts on the stoppage? too soon? Or right on time?

I remember Jumbo occasionaly coming and working out at the old CYO gym in Chicago. I was an amateur.
The dude was enormous. Looked like a weight lifter thats for sure. I think hes back in the joint now.
I never talked to him. Never got to know him at all.

Hi expug.

No, I don't think it was stopped prematurely. Jumbo did seem to want to go on and remonstrated a little with the ref. But he was only gonna get hurt if allowed to continue.

Yes, Cummings looks massive. And all solid muscle.

I'll put the fight up on Youtube when I get in tonight and then you can have a look and give us your thoughts.

Thanks Collins.
I will look forward to checking it out.
Its funny that I dont remember this fight getting much press back here in Jumbos home town.
The last time I saw him fight I think was when he bit Reynaldo Snipes on the shoulder on National Tv.
Maybe the press soured on him a bit after that.
Jumbo made a name for himself, I would say, when he belted out a local guy by the name of George Mostardini.
George had some ability and was being brought along. I think Ernie Terrel was promoting him.
Its a little bit before my time, but I think Cummings knocked him out. From that point on Cummings started to make a little name for himself. Get bigger fights.Of course, he had the draw with Frazier a little after.

Incidentaly, thats the same George Mostardini who fought an exhibition bout with new champ Leon Spinks at Chicagos Ampitheatre in 78.
The bout ended early because of a melee between Mostardinis contingent and Spinks' security detail.
That security detail was led by none other than Mr T who was literaly THROWING people out of the ring.
Another great moment in Chicago boxing history  .

I scored the remainder the same as you Collins.

Cummings was wild and erratic, and Bruno worked
behind that lovelly long and thumping jab.

Collins, thanks for posting that video. I had never seen Jumbo fight before. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it. Will the Bruno - Caldwell sparring session be included?
