Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
I have watched this bout, and felt it was close.
I went away thinking Johnson won.
BUT>>>
I have not scored it. I shall do this as some homework
in the coming days.
From what I recall it was a real Hagler-Leonard sort
of thing, where some who favour the forward movement
aggression would go for Harold, and those that liked the
pecking almost pre Ali, Ali style would favour Willie.
BUT... I shall re watch and score it.
It was an enjoyable fight from what I do recall however.

Some observations.
Willie clearly won the last round:

It's always been seen as a controversial decision yet the crowd loved it as exhibited by the applause.
He was a slick fighter.
Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
I shall do it as an open scoring thread :)
Like the one Collins and I are doing for Cummings v Bruno
Round 1.
Both fighters are in the ring, the announcer is about to
introduce other fighters in attendance.
Don Dunphy is doing the commentary.
Eddie Machen, Jackie Fields, Maxie Rosenbloom, Joe Louis, and
current HW champ Sonny Liston, who dwarfs Patrano and
Johnson when he shakes there hands, are all in attendance.
....
Pastrano gives up ground early, Johnson works behind his jab,
they tangle in the corner, but nothing clean lands.
Again Johnson follows and leads with his jab while Pastrano
backs up. They tangle on the inside, both active though nothing
lands clean.
Pastrano backs up but is effective with his double jab, Johnson
stalks behind his own jab, landing the occasional left hook behind
it.
Pastrano's flicking jab is replied by Johnson's right hand to his body
on a few occasions.
Johnson 10-9
Round 2
Starts of much the same, Johnson lands his own nice double jab
early. Johnson is finding a home for his right hand to the body
as Pastrano moves away behind his flicking jab. Pastrano has nice
head movement and is able to slip Johnson's jab.
After a real exchange of jab's, Johnson flurries his way into Pastrano
who ends up on the ropes, after taking some clean, though not
hard shots.
Pastrano lands some jabs, then runs. Johnson lands a nice left
hook, right cross as a counter.
Johnson flurries in an attempt to trap Pastrano, but Willie has
good movement and is able to stay on his bike.
The jabs are exchanged by both men, Pastrano blasts in with a
right hand lead and lands it, but it does not bother Johnson who
returns a left hook as it lands.
Pastrano backs away and pecks, Johsnon flurries and gets inside,
both exhange and stay active while clinched.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 3
The round starts of much the same as the other two, Johnson
coming forward behind his jab, as Pastrano works backwards
behind his.
Pastrano lands a nice left hook under the chin of Johnson,
and backs away with a clean landing double jab.
They continue to land jabs, Johnsons seeming harder as he
comes forward, where as Pastrano looks for the double.
Each time they come together, they both flurry, though Johnson
lands good body shots on the inside.
Pastrano comes forward after the break in the clinch, and misses
as he is off balance, Johnson lands a nice left hook high and follows
up, cleanest series so far.
They again continue to exchange jabs in the same manner, Johnson
forward, while Pastrano backs away.
As they come together at the rounds end, Johnson lands a combination
body shots and nice head blows.
Johnson 10-9
Notes so far.
pastrano is basically landing only jabs, his double jab, when he throws
it is effective.
Pastrano can parry and slip Johnson's jab well.
On the inside Johnson seems to win each time. He has thrown the more
clean landing right hands, and hooks. He is landing good body blows.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 4
Willie is starting to step in with the jab and even lands a nice
left hook. Johnson comes in and opens up with a flurry as he
has Pastrano against the ropes, who manages to escape nicely
with a good counter. Johnson lands a nice right hand over the
jab as Pastrano backs away.
Both men cover a good distance of the ring as Pastrano lands
more jabs, backing away. Johnson is just short on landing his.
Johnson is eager to engage Pastrano, but Willie just wants to
move and peck away. Both men exchange jabs, some landing
most glancing at best. Pastrano lands a combination that gets
the crowd excited, though Johnson still stalks forward.
Johnson bores forward to throw some combo's but every time he
is close, Pastrano clinches and awaits for the break.
Pastrano 10-9
It is a close round, but I have awared it to Pastrano becuase his
jab was more consistent and landed more, Johnson is throwing less
to the body now.
Round 5
Early on here Johnson keeps Pastrano at range enought to land some
good and glancing blows. Pastrano has good headmovement and slips
most, but some do get through. Pastrano gets his back to the rings centre
and starts moving away..again.
Johnson lands a light though clean right hand lead, he is also more effective
with his jab against the fleet footed Pastrano. Johnson steps in with a good
combo and all land, nice right hand to the jaw at the end of the series.
Johnson is coming forward behind the jab, Pastrano is less active. Pastrano
steps in to throw a burst, but is countered mid sentence by a nice Johnson
right hand.
Pastrano is back on his bike behind his jab and starts to find Johnson's head
with it. Though Pastrano is landing his jabs as he runs, Johnson throws a nice
left hook-right hand to the head of Pastrano that catches him, though Pastrano
stays mobile.
Pastrano is able to flick more jabs home, Johnson lands a right hand counter over
the top nicely. He also replies to a left to the body, that lands just south of the
belly. Johnson slams a right hand into Pastrano's skull that throws him against
the ropes. Johnson roughs Pastrano up on the inside towards the end
of this round.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 6
Pastrano is backing away behind a less effective jab, Johnson
is able to land a sequence when he is close enough, focusing
the shots to the body. Pastrano clinches to avoid the blows,
it is clear that he does not want to go toe to toe with Harold.
The ref warns Johnson again for low blows, but none are
THAT low, though he is throwing his flurries to the body, every
time Pastrano is close enough.
Half way in, Johnson lands a good one two with a right hand crashing
into Pastrano, Pastrano tries to clinch, but Johnson bursts some body
shots while still in range. Even landing a nice left hook to the jaw
as Pastrano keeps trying to press the clinch. Good upper cuts and
inside blows thrown by Johnson, each landing on the desperate to
tie his man up, Pastrano.
Pastrano lands some jabs, three in a row, but Johnson presses forward,
he times a counter well and lands another right hand hard on Pastrano
followed by some body blows. Willie backs away and disengages again.
MOre jabs are exchanged by both men, Johnson mixes in some hard body
blows as replies to Pastrano's jab.
Johnson has started to land on the body again and is able to counter
Pastrano's jab.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 7
Again Johnson follows the ever backing away pastrano,
each time he is in range or Pastrano is against the ropes
Johnson rough's him up with spurts or combinations.
Though now, early on Pastrano is not throwing too many
jabs or anything in return.
Pastrano about a minute in starts jabbing, lands OK, but
Johnson gets in close and roughs Pastrano up with his
short blows.
Johnson lands a hard fast and furious sequence 2 mins in
after Pastrano stays immobile. Pastrano flee's after the flurry
has landed.
Johnson really roughs Pastrano up on the inside, working the
body nicely. Pastrano is just clinching, never once returning
fire or eager to engage Johnson at this range.
Pastrano did little this round, and on the inside Johnson has
landed well and a lot to the body. At the end of each round
both men have tapped gloves and shown a good deed of
respect to one another.
Johnson 10-9
Round 8
This round begins with both men picking off one another at
long range, Pastrano even threw a right hand. It is Johnson's
jab and right to the body that is the more consistent hitter.
After a minute, the jabs start scoring again by each men.
Pastrano lands a stiff jab, and shortly after a left hook to the
body on Johnson, but not much else so far in this round.
JOhnson again starts to close the distance and land more shots,
he bangs the body and finds Pastrano's chin.
Another Johnson round.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 9
Johnson lands a right lead to the body early, but Pastrano's
jabs are finding a home now. Johnson is unable to land, and
those he does hit with are glancing at best. Early on Pastrano
is able to stick nicely behind his jab.
A left hook to the body by Johnson as a counter to a Pastrano
jab, is followed shortly by more of Johnson roughing Pastrano
up on the inside.
Johnson lands some nice jabs to Pastrano's nose, who is now
struggling to land on Johnson. A good left hook near the back
of Willie's head, while Pastrano is off balance is scored by Johnson.
Johnson is landing hard jabs on Pastrano, who is moving away,
but not returning any thing. Johnson lands a lovely jab-left hook
followed by a right hand, though landing clean Pastrano dances
away and avoids any further contact.
Johnson is able to slip Pastrano's jab and counters well. They mix
it up, both landing glancing blows, but Johnson is the more effective
at this range. Pastrano retreats after each engagement.
They each trade jabs, after a few light contacts Johnson finds the
range and lands a right hand, and then bursts a volley into the
backs to the ropes Pastrano. Pastrano shows his skills as a defensive
fighter as he avoids most of them, and stays mobile while against
the ropes. At close range though Johnson owns him and really roughs
him up.
Pastrano throws and lands the first right hand in awhile for him,
but Johnson blasts some left hooks back at him for his efforts.
Dunphy calls this one the best round of the fight so far, but
it is again all Johnson.
Johnson 10-9
I really can not see how this is considered a close fight, it is in
no way a Hagler-Leonard affair. Pastrano is throwing and landing
maybe 15 jabs a round, and if he throws anything else it is very
rare. Pastrano does move well, and has good defensive skills, but
Johnson is still landing.
I wonder if the later rounds see's Johnson slow up and Pastrano
take the lead ??

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 10
The round begins much the same as the others, Pastrano moving and
landing his jab well. He does score with a long range left hook, though
glancing.
Johnson is able to flurry and work the body any time they are in range.
Pastrano is mroe active, but still just off the jab. Johnson is just following
now, though he does manage to work near and bang away at Pastrano's
body and lands a right on the jaw. Pastrano slips and gets moving again.
Pastrano lands some more jabs, throws some right hands and lands them,
his best round thus far. Johnson is able to trap him on the ropes and send
some of his own shots home.
Near the end of the round Pastrano lands a right on the sdie of Johnson's
face, but now on the inside Johnson bangs away again.
Pastrano's best round, but having said that it was not definitive. Johnson
has slowed up.
JOhnson's work at close range has to account for something over all,
every time he is in range he throws 3-6 shots and nearly all land.
Pastrano 10-9
Round 11
JOhnson comes out more active with his jab, doubling up on it. He throws
Pastrano's timing of with his early activity, though he is unable to land
clean on the fleet footed Pastrano.
It is a much more active Johnson now who is working his jab nice, landing
the occasional left hook and right to the body. Willie is doing his best to
slip and parry, but some get through.
When Pastrano does jab, Johnson is able to pick them of with his right hand,
Johnson is leading nice and landing well. Pastrano has done little so far, near
half way into the round.
Johnson sends a nice right hand lead over Pastrano's shoulder, it lands but
pastrano keeps sliding away.
The last round see's Johnson landing his jab to the head and body, while
Pastrano occasionally returns fire. When on the inside they clinch waiting
for the ref to step in, Johnson is less active on the inside now, but he has
found with an active jab he can nullify Pastrano's offensive at long range.
Pastrano throws a combination or two at the end of the round, none land.
Johnson 10-9
So far Pastrano has run a near marathon going backwards, and besides his
jab has not thrown much else. And even then I can not imagine his punch
stats for jabs landed being all that impressive.

landing his jab well. He does score with a long range left hook, though

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 12
The round opens with both men exchanging jabs, Johnson landing a
right lead. Pastrano is able to land a nice left hook while both are
on the inside.
Most of Johnson's jabs send Pastrano's head backwards, whereas
Pastrano's seem to have a limited impact on Johnson who continues
to come forward.
Pastrano is in and out with his boxing some more and has some effective
shots land. He scores a left hook on Johnson, but Harold replies with a
rushing flurry and sends some hard nuggety right hands into Pastrano's
body and head.
Past the half way mark, pastrano is more effective with his jab, doubles
with it some more. Johnson lands some of his own, and even tries for
the right hand lead.
Pastrano lands a nice left hook as a counter to a Johnson jab.
Pastrano is sticking and moving some more, Johnson finds his body with
the right hand, and once again is able to land some hard though short
range shots on the inside.
The last moments of the round see's Johnson land a right high and a
left hook into the chest, Pastrano throws the occasional jab.
Pastrano landed the more crowd friendlier shots, but over all did little
over the course of the round. I shall award it to Pastrano, but again
it was a close round.
Pastrano 10-9
Round 13
The round opens with each man exchanging jabs, Johnson going to the
body with his right. Then johnson is able to land a hard right onto Pastrano,
Willie does a weird chicken dance as he does his best to stay standing.
Pastrano holds, then moves back, Johnson lands a left hook right on the
jaw, but Pastrano fights back and starts to roll to avoid Johnson's hard
shots. Pastrano has really impressive recovery. He returns fire though with
limited effect.
Pastrano goes for his backwards run again, Johnson stalks behind his jab,
Pastrano is ineffective with his defensive shots as Johnson comes in. Pastrano
man hugs as he tries to recover.
Pastrano is on his bicycle again, Jonnson lands some more, gets a right hand
onto pastrano. Willie clinches, holds on.
Johnson lands a right hand from the outside on Pastrano's face. Willie clinches
again.
Pastrano starts to pop his jab back at Johnson. Both exchange fire with the
left hand, but Pastrano looks like his legs are solid again as he dances away.
Johnson gets another right hand on Pastrano's head, but WIllie hugs Johnson.
Johnson comes forward again, but as Willie tries to clinch, Johnson is able to
get in some good blows on the indise.
The round ends with both men mixing jabs up, Johnson just missing a high right
hand.
You could almost make this a 10-8 for Johnson.
BUt... Ill say

left hand, but Pastrano looks like his legs are solid again as he dances away.
BUt... Ill say
Johnson 10-9
Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Round 14
Round opens with Johnson....again..coming forward and Pastrano
giving up ground. Johnson throwing rights to the body or head,
left hooks to the body. Pastrano throwing some jabs. And then
clinching when Johnson is in range.
Johnson comes forward, Pastrano side steps and lands a nice left
hook to JOhnson's chin. Very nice motion.
From it Pastrano presses the clinch, while Johnson tries to punch
and work at close range.
After some more movement, the clinch again with johnson throwing
on the inside to the body, as Pastrano does his Ruiz-esque game.
Pastrano is backing up with no return fire, Johnson is following him
and manages to land a right hand over the top.
Johnson lands another right hand behind a soft jab, Pastrano slips
away, avoiding any exhcnage.
Johnson tries for another combo, but Pastrano clinches again.
pastrano tries a double jab, and jives about a bit, but JOhnson puts
him on his heels with a hard left hook to the body.
Besides the sexy side step left hook, Pastrano did little besides
run and clinch this round.
Johnson 10-9
Round 15
Pastrano looks tired in between the round. Dundee has to work his
magic to get a KO win for his boy...or does he ??
Pastrano is a little more aggressive, works his way into a clinch.
They enchange jabs, Johnson throws a short right hand, nothing to
special.
Pastrano lands a jab, they close in, Pastrano looks to clinch, but
Johnson busts free with a combination ending with a left hook.
After a few jabs, they end up in the clinch again after a minute of
action.
Pastrano's jab is back, he is landing it nicely when he throws it. Johnson
is just a tad short with his own.
Pastrano throws some right leads, and turns south paw as he did much
earlier in the fight, though brief.
Pastrano is sticking and moving, Johnson rushes in and is less effective
with his mauling tactics on the inside, though he does get some of his
leather into Pastrano's body.
Pastrano is back to his double jab, it is hitting Johnson well. Johnson
attempts a right hand counter to it, but nothing meaty with it.
Pastrano jabs and grabs, they clinch, but Johnson attempts to punch himself
free while clinching.
Johnson tags Pastrano with another right lead on the cheek, while Pastrano
backs away and works on the run with his jab.
Pastrano attempts a right hand, but misses, they exchange near the ropes as
the fight comes to a close. Johnson sinks some good shots into Pastrano's
body, but Pastrano attempts a flurry.
The round comes to a close. A better round for Pastrano, though close. I shall
give it to Willie.

Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
I have it
146-139 Johnson.
A clear cut Johnson win.
I was being as fair to each fighter as I could. I gave some
close rounds, two I think, to Pastrano.
This was a clear cut robbery !
Johnson deserved a rematch at the very least. I will do my
best to upload this fight online. And those that doubt
my scoring I really would appreciate for myself, how you
guys saw it.
This was not a Hagler-Leonard fight, where I scored it for
Leonard. Becuase Pastrano did not even flurry or land any
hard or flush shots like Leonard did in that fight, he seldom
threw more than his jab. And even then, he did not have
that many land.
I would love to see the punch numbers on some of these
early fights.

I'm going to have to watch this later.
I've always loved Willie Pastrano.
How could you not?
{After being knocked down by Jose Torres, the ref asks "Where are you & what's happening?"}
"I'm in Madison Square Garden, getting the sh1t kicked out of me!"

I don't know why people find it unfathomable he could have beat Johnson. Boxers rarely saw that kind of movement.Datsue wrote:I'm going to have to watch this later.

I'm not as detailed as you but I thought Willie fought a smart fight.

I dont find it unfathomable that he COULD beat Johnson,
He just Did not.
I would love to see how you scored the fight ThatONe.
Even just your round by round score ?
So we could compare how we felt each round played out
and perhaps you could let me know why you felt Pastrano
won the majority of the rounds.
Thanks again

Well, you don't suppose the crowd could have been pro-Willie, do you?
Johnson was robbed.
Re: How Did You Score Harold Johnson -Willie Pastrano?
Robinson, this is a sincere question-no motive attached.
You, I think are an active fighter, I a 52 year old coach/Judge at amature level. How da hell do you find the time/energy to do the (excellent) analysis you did on this fight?-and other stuff.

Where has ThatOne gone ?
The fight is on YT for all to see and he has not given us his score...
all he has said is that Pastrano won....
I have read that Willie won too, does not mean I saw Willie win.
