national p.a.l 2009
i need help understanding the meaning of the national p.a.l? a group of us went last year it was my first time going and someone that i know won the national. pal but then we went to the state pal and he lost! would he still be considered #1 in the nation? and my other question is why is the national pals being held first and not the state pal. isnt supposed to be the best of every region not just any body?
Re: national p.a.l 2009
The National PAL is an open-entry tournament. Some states have State PAL tournaments, but it is more about being a fundraiser and providing competition than anything else. Someone from a state with such a tournament can speak to it more. The National PAL is held in late summer/early fall as it was in 2009. If a local tournament is held at the end of the year-2009 or the early part of the next year-2010 (winter) those tournaments will be preparing the boxers for the National PAL held in the fall of that year - 2010. A boxer can lose at the local level and still go to the National tournament and win. It happens with other tournaments too. Sometimes a boxer loses in a local or regional tournament and because the winner can't go for whatever reason, the second boxer goes as an alternate. Sometimes the alternate then goes to the National tournament and wins it. It has even happened with the Olympic Games. Buster Mathis defeated Joe Frazier in the 1964 Olympic Trials. Mathis was injured and Frazier was sent as the alternate and he went on to win the Gold Medal.

BTW - this is off topic, but think about the fact that we had 3 Olympic Gold Medalists all from USA battling each other for the World HW Championship in the 1970's - Muhammad Ali (1960 Olympic Champ), Joe Frazier (1964 Olympic Champ), and George Foreman (1968 Olympic Champ).

Re: national p.a.l 2009
No, I won't be there. I currently do not have any elite caliber JO's. Good luck to your son and you at the NSG. I will most likely be at a lot of senior national tournaments this year - NGG, USA Championships, NPAL, and probably some international competitions.BEAST21 wrote:ok good to know im very new at the usa amateur im from tampa fl and i have a son that just started he has 12 fights his 13yrs 139lb and we are going to the national silver gloves. this is our second time going to a national tournament. we went to the pals in san antonio tx he lost against kareem martin in the final. are you going to the silver gloves next week?? if you are look for me and my son our name is mark reyes sr. and jr. thanks for your help!!

In answer to Beast - California has a State PAL tournament just for the sake of having it. It doesn't advance to any other tournament. The National PAL is a ranking tournament that is part of the system USA Boxing uses to determine the US rankings. Since USA Boxing goes by a points/number system, winning the National PAL does not guarantee a #1 USA ranking.
You can contact Rocky Garza at the Oxnard, CA PAL. His number is 805-385-8256. You can also contact them, probably, at www.oxnardpalboxing.com. Good luck. Let me know what happens. Can anyone tell me how i can get or who i have to call to get the video of the finals and semis of the national pal in san antonio?!
