Joe Frazier -vrs-Dave Zygelwicz(1969)

April-22-1969 at Houston Texas for the New York State Title.
It only lasted one round but looks to me that Zygelwicz put up a better fight before being flattened by a left hook then what you generally read in some boxing books.

That is why its best to watch boxing and not read about it.
Thats atleast how I found things.
You can read something and go away with an impression
of a bout, then watch it yourself and scratch your head
as to how the writer drew those conclusions or why they
painted the fight in such a way.

What I recall about this fight is how Dave tried going toe
to toe with Frazier and did a good job at tagging Frazier
with some of his own blows.
You get an appreciation as to how well Frazier hurts the
body though.
Though short lived it was a fun bang fest.

Don't left hook with a left hooker, I guess the saying goes.

Was this bout televised live?
If so on which television station?

Now that's a fight that was finished in state of the art fashion! What a murderous hook he had! And kudos to Dave attempting to go to the body early, and it does look like he moved Joe back with a body shot in the very early going. But that plan just aint sound against Joe!

No.

This '69 fight was in the middle of Joe's true peak, which was from '68 to late '70, imo.

Looks like the announcer could have known the right way to pronounce Joe's last name.

Wonder whatever happened to Ziggy? He sure got nailed by Joe's left.

George Foreman(still an amateur)did a 3 round boxing exhibition with Chester Walton on the undercard of this fight which was in his hometown.
I wonder if that was taped/filmed?

i loved ziggy and his wife fran.great people true hippie bikers.

ziggy was a crude brawler who was not afraid of a damn thing
his lung problems and lack of endurance is why he said he went at frazier with everything he
had early.

born with asthma....later on in life developed copd
the earlier stages of lung problems were already an issue
ziggy was winded after running a mile and sparring
was nearly nonexistant

I wonder if Joe knew that? Seeing as Joe was one of the best cardiovascular champs ever, he must have known that was going to be a short trip to the canvas for Dave.

According to Earnie Shaver's autobigraphy,WELCOME TO THE BIG TIME,after Shavers had won the national AAU ,he recieved a mysterious phone call asking him if he would like
to box Foreman in the 3 round exhibition under the Frazier-Zygelwicz fight.
They offer him 500 dollars with one promise that"George must win".
"Sorry I cant do that" said Shavers over the phone.
Then we cant use you said the voice and then there was a dial tone.

:oo He won a 12 rounder once and went 10 rounds at least ten times in his career - winning all but two.
