all i can say is that wlad is the better more proven against men closer to his own size. both men were beatable by smaller opponents.
so i consider wlad the favorite , at least he was not beaten by a lightheavy like cooney did , and did beat real superheavies such as thompson , mccline , austin , bostice , wolfgramm.

Think this would be a fun fight in the early going. Cooney's chin was pretty fragile but we all know if Cooney could land the left hook it'd be curtains for Wladimir. Cooney also had some pretty quick hands. If Gerry gets him it has to be early, as when the bout slows down and if Klitschko could establish his jab and distance, he'll eventually stop Cooney with right hands late.

Alternatively, either one could land a heavy blow & take the other out in the early going.

I like Klitschko's jab to be the determining factor. He beats Cooney.

Klitschko doesn't sit down on his shots in the early going, particularly when he's facing someone whose power he respects. It's why almost all of his knockouts vs top comp are past the 5th round. In fact the lone KO he has vs what could've been argued as a top 10 opponent before the 7th round was vs Austin. So if anyone is in danger of going out early, it's Klitschko.

I assume we're talking about the current prime Wlad K. here, because he used to be an early round killer but after he got his chin shattered the 2nd and 3rd times he slowed WAY down and started probing more at a much more relaxed pace.

Cooney comes out hot and freaks Wladdy out, rocking him a bit with grazing hooks, but Wlad quickly shuts him down with counter-rights followed by clinches to survive the early storm before beginning to establish the distance to set up his one-twos. Wlad eventually drops the hammer on Cooney and stops him with repeated right crosses around the 8th.

I like Cooney early. Cooney really had big league power and he started fast. Against Holmes he kept a good pace for more than long enough to overcome Wlad, brother Vitali would be a different story.

He was never an early round guy vs upper level comp. Look at his boring jab fests vs Botha, Schultz, McCline etc. He was always a cautious fighter but yes after Brewster I he became even more cautious.

Cooney was a strong puncher who could throw punches from different angles. With Klitschko's chin and the fact that Cooney is almost as tall he could get lucky early and knock the Russian out, but i think Klitschko would stay away. He would be patient and look for opportunities when Cooney was tiring. I think Klitschko would fight a smart fight and he has learned from past mistakes, fighting much better defensively.
Klitschko's not Russian, & this is a dangerous fight for him, any way you slice it.
