You know other then the one round against Ken Norton which was on HBO,
I think that the only Cooney fights that have been available on youtube for the public to see for years are his three loses seen over and over on youtube.
Which distorts his fighting career just having to watch if thats all thats available to see on youtube.
How many of his 31 professional fights were televised or filmed?
On which networks?

Some sellers have these early fights on vhs.but I wonder if they were locally televised or taped from audience.

Young was definitely on CBS Sports Spectacular and I think Lyle was too. George Chaplin was also on the networks, I'm not sure which one. I think it was one of Fox's offerings.

I had read that Gil Clancey wanted a tune up match before Cooney fought George Foreman in 1990.
It was also reported as an "unlicensed tuneup"
using 8 oz. gloves and no head gear.
Cooney won the decision.

You are right.Apparently it was shown nationally on ESPN on next day tape,with commentery by Gerry Cooney.

I saw the Cooney-Chaplin fight on TV.

The stoppage by the ref was garbage.

There was no reason for the fight to be stopped.

Chaplin was a good fighter, his two robbery losses to Greg Page were as bad as it gets. It was probably Cooney's best win. There is a lot of sentiment now that Cooney is underrated and could of would of, etc...

I have no resentment towards Gerry. He is a genuine nice guy and very proactive in looking after other fighters and trying to implement new measures to help all fighters.

He just wasn't very good and while they may have rushed him, he may very well have lost before he got the huge fight if they didn't.

Tommy Morrison > Gerry Cooney, I think that says it all.

Edit: Not sure what happened there, I responded to a post from Brutu.

Cooney had a big fan base from Long Island.His profesional debut was against Bill Jackson/KO1/ February 15.1977 at the Sunnyside Gardens Queens NYC.
I wonder how many of his early fights may have been recorded by fans from Long Island who had video cameras in the audience and perhaps
the vhs tapes are just still sitting in a shoebox in someones closet next to their platform shoes(like perhaps a lot of other fights of other boxers).

I know of two fights Cooney had ( "won") that were fakes set up before they took place.

When you want to bring along a fighter like Cooney, the first rule is you don't let him in there with anyone who can punch as you are bringing him up.

You also get a string of 'fighters' who don't train full time and will run out of gas after 5-6 rounds. And have them fight him in 10 round fights.

That's the way it's done.

The last time I saw a clip of that was about 20 years ago.
Cooney was pounding him against the ropes and knocked Lyle out of the ring and I believe broke one of Lyle's ribs in the process.

Lyle was clearly past his best, much like a Mercer was
against Klitschko or a Moore against Ali, but in any case
the body shot that Cooney landed on Lyle was savage
and extremely hard and well placed. I can not imagine
too many men taking that and having fight left in them.
