Stan Ward is a name that pops up a number of times on the records of some of the top Heavyweights of the early 1980's. Looking at his record he seemed a fringe contener who lost against the top guys.

About ten years ago I came across a copy of The Ring from the mid 1970's which had Stan Ward written up as a bit of a prospect. Has anybody here seen him fight? What was his fighting style etc?

I think I heard somewhere that he is now a High School teacher can anybody confirm this?

Stan Ward was a fringe top ten guy who had
real good power, but was a little heavy on his feet, and
not blessed with great hand speed. He generally did
better against sluggers then boxers. In his prime he
had his jaw broken badly while sparring against
Jeff Merritt "I think" which set him back a few years.

OK I must be confusing the two, but your still wrong about Ali.

I dont know who Ernie Shavers is but I do know who Earnie Shavers is.

the correct name was Earnie Shaver.....he finally got the name Earnie accepted, but gave up on the Shaver and added the s, seeing it was a losing battle.

in the late 70s ward last a split decision to ron lyle, who was subsequently KOd in 2 rds by journeyman lynn ball.

any recollections of ward v ron lyle, people?

If I remember correctly Boxing was not even Stan Wards first profession..

He was also a high school science teacher in Sacramento

I bet he didn't have many disipline problems in his class

Ward also fought Greg Page and Mike Weaver

ANYBODY have recollections of what happened in wards fights with greg page or ron lyle?

I heard on another thread he returned to teaching after his ring career was over. Someone out there must know for sure.

If I remember correctly Ward fought rising prospect Greg Page in 1981 Page jabbed the slower Ward silly for six rounds.. Stan's eye balloned up and he didn't answer the bell for the seventh

You say that Tiger Williams beat Holmes (nonsense...Williams declined after losing the Holmes fight the same way Jones declined after fighting Ali.) jeff simms broke his jaw- ward was good- he was avoided by 6 rds fighters and had to start taking 10 ers just to stay busy- he beat some good guys right off the bat and then had trouble getting fights- he became a part time fighter, basically, accepting many bouts on short notice.

i remember stan ward and i have a few of his fights on tape.
stan was a stepping stone for any real contenders.
not a bad fighter but far from a real contender.
