WBO heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders from South Africa has cancelled his title defence against challenger Lamon Brewster for Hamburg, October 18. Sanders asked Universum Box-Promotion to give him more time for preparation.

Sanders dethroned WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in March this year in Germany and hasn't fought since. The show in Hamburg's Color Line Arena on October 18 will still take place. It will see Dariusz Michalczewski's 49th fight as a pro in a WBO light-heavyweight title defence against Julio Gonzalez. If "Tiger" defeats Gonzalez, he will equal Rocky Marciano’s historic record streak of 49 straight wins.

Universum Box-Promotion has offered Sanders a new date for the Brewster fight on November 15.

Could be dangerous in a rematch with Klitchko if he gets confused and shouts 'fore' before launching one down the middle! :)

I'm getting a feeling of deja vu here - in the 1980's another slightly fragile South African won a version of the heavyweight title over a big favorite - Coetzee knocked out Mike Dokes - then takes on an American he's suposed to beat ( Greg Page ) and gets laid out.
Will history repeat itself? Wouldn't be surprised.....

Yes, Corrie blows up if he doesn't get an opponent out of there, but it's a big 'ask' for Brewster against the perenially underrated Sanders, who is a frightening athlete, played national league rugby in South Africa and is close to pro standard as a golfer.
Not a bad boxer either. I'd love to see him fight Tyson. Two of the best one-round fighters in the world going at it. It would be Hagler-Hearns all over again, only sloppier.

I like Sanders too bennie, I said when they matched him with Wlad it was a dangerous one to take - he came out like a freight train against Rahman before running out of steam.
But like you say, he's one of the most dangerous fighters in the world for rounds 1-3, though he did get clocked by Nate Tubbs early on.

I was looking forward to a Jones Jr match, just to see how Roy would cope in the first few rounds....

I actually like Brewester in this one. I'll never forget on the undercard of Lewis vs Morrison where Sanders faced Arthur 'Stormy' Weathers. It was Paul Dempsey who asked both McGuigan and Frank Maloney what they thought of Sanders' chances against Lewis, this was because of Sanders' elevated world rating at the time. Both McGuigan and FM laughed off Sanders and basically said that he was inept.

While it was perhaps wrong of the commentators to say this, it still had a touch of truth to it. Now I don't know much about Brewester, but I remember Danny Williams (when he was riding high in the WBC rankings) saying of all the prospect he most feared (including the Klitchko's) it was Brewester. Is own words 'he's got it all'.

With Sanders's poor stamina and dodgy chin, surely that all Brewster will have to do its run for a few rounds untill the old guy runs out of gas. Also, while I'm not denying Sanders doesn't whack, if Brewester's got a good chin perhaps he could survive a Sanders onslaught. I have my doubts about Wladimir's punch resistance, Brewester's may be better.

I go for Brewester by KO around the 9th.

Thank God Earnie Els didn't follow through with his plans to quit golf and try boxing......otherwise, Wladimir would have another dangerous Golfer to contend with!
