Last One Standing

On the back of his recent controversial elimination on Fox 8's "The Contender" - Australian champion boxer Junior Talipeau is bringing a new format of boxing to Australia - "The Last One Standing".
The NSW Combat Sports Authority, the governing body, has sanctioned a pilot of the new concept to be held in Sydney on 23 April. For the pilot, eight welter-weight (under 66kg) boxers will compete in one night, in an eight man eliminator consisting of a qualifying round, semi-final and final.
The winner of the eliminator "the last one standing" will win $10,000. It is expected that prize money going forward will be substantially higher to suit the calibre of fighters.
"As a boxer, I know how hard it is to break into the industry at a professional level. The Last One Standing (LOS) concept will be used as a platform to increase the profile of up and coming boxers and each fight will go on their professional boxing record. With this concept we will look after our boxers - we will profile them and we will pay them well" says Junior.

I like it.
Reminds me of the old UFC, Pride tournaments in MMA.
And it's like the super six tournament currently at SMW, just condensed to suit our shorter concentration timeframes.

they have been doing this in kick boxing derivitives for ages....also the UK has had the same thing on Prizefighter (i think that's the name). They fight for serious money over there.

Hmmm... I am now rather sceptical. How can they expect you to buy tickets without knowing any of the fighters!?!

perhaps they could put in Lwelters, like Ganoy, SWills, etc....just a thought

The concept is on trial, because of NSW mandatory 5 clear days break between fights.
Fair few welters reside in other States as do light & super welters, so until it's known who suffers the cost of travel & accommodation it's hard to tell how many will be interested.
I'd say the one's that hold OZ & Regional title will probably give it a miss.

i also believe he will dominate the tournament,
i honestly believe that no Aussie Welterweight/Lwelter can beat him, i see Ganoy beating Prospect Lenny Zappa,

They'll end up scraping together whoever they can get I reckon, just like The Contender.

with all due respect, its not really the best way to teach an up and comer how to fight. would create bad habits maybe.
but for reasonable boxers that don't expect to go too far anyway it would be entertaining.

that's exactly who it should be aimed at Buster. Good Regional fighters. It would be entertaining with the right mix.

The K-1 has been doing this successfully for years with heavy weight kickboxers. It has developed into a global 'Grand Prix' circut, culmanating in the annual grand final in Japan. The K1 has been known for its excitement, unlikely match ups (If you want to stay on the circut and earn the big bucks, you don't have the right of refusal) since its inception some 17-18 years ago.
From 2000-2003,I think it was, a promoter did an annual last man standing (eight man knock out) tournament with the best australasian middle weight kickboxers, Daniel Dawson, Shane Chapman, Wayne Par etc. This was some of the best kickboxing I had seen since, and maybe including, the halcyon days of the early nineties. The short, action packed fights and increadable match ups of genuine champions made for an entertaining night out that was big on value and short on dissapointment.
If this is managed right, we all get behind it, there's enough money on offer, and local boxers start worrying more about having a crack and less on getting a loss or two then this can only be good for local boxing. There is enough talent in the major weight divisions in the south pacific region to make this work. The format is simple, a number of fighters are offered transport, accomadation and a little bit of appearence money, as well as the fight experience and exposure of course, with the winner recieving, say, $15 000-$20 000 and possably aprize for second place.
The keys to this are going to be good promotion, good management, enough prize money to lure good fighters and, of course people getting behind it. It has been very successfull for kickboxing and it could help local boxing immensely.

Tarack solack(sp) did it well. Getting off topic, jwp was robbed in one of those tournaments by zambidis. Also, my mate beat Zambo in one of those. One of the few blokes ever to do so.
Sorry to get off topic
