Seven years in the making, the work of love of my dear friend Alfredo Bejar finally sees the light.

IMAGINING MINA
In 1962 a new talent arrived on the U.S. boxing scene. Mauro Mina had become one of the best light heavyweights in the world by fighting exclusively in South America. Now, just one more obstacle stood between him and international boxing stardom.
It had already been a long road for Mina who began life in a rural African-Peruvian community, was a child worker in the town of Chincha and struggled as a young man in Lima before becoming a professional boxer. As his career and fame progressed, he became the toast of the city, the hope of Peru and a national symbol in a fragmented society.
On the verge of becoming the first Latino light heavyweight champion -a category then dominated by U.S boxers- some of the same forces that had propelled him to the top would conspire against him.
Imaging Mina is a story-driven documentary. Dozens of people were interviewed and hundreds of archival sources consulted in order to learn about the era in which Mauro Mina lived, the obstacles he encountered, including racism, and the inner workings of the 1960s boxing business. The film includes segments on legendary U.S. pugilists including Eddie Cotton and Bob Foster --the “Yanquis”, as they were known-- who traveled abroad to seek better opportunies and who are just one of the many parts of this fascinating but forgotten chapter of South American and boxing history.

And look at the list of those he beat--
Bob Foster
Eddie Cotton (twice)

Henry Hank

Sonny Ray
Allan Thomas

It was a pretty green Foster, but it's still a nice name to have on your resume, if only for posterity.
I don't think the victory over Foster could be a true A-class success, given the maturity of the opponent, though.

Broncano,
Can you post the photo of Mina standing over a flattened Bob Foster?

Agreed, Bob Foster's name shines if one takes a quick glance at Mina's record.
However, if you are looking for A class success the two victories over Cotton certainly qualify. Cotton was ranked # 1 LH by Ring Magazine at the time of his first bout with Mina.
Gran, I will scan and post that picture tomorrow.

Naturally --- I wasn't implying Mina didn't have any A-level successes --- just wanted to point out I didn't think Foster could be counted as one, even though he would go on to be just that, & it's still nice to have a fighter of that sterling calibre in your, 'W' column at damn near any point of their career (even so, twelve fights is pushing it a bit).
No arguments from me & Mina's class as a fighter

For some reason the scanned images came out all dark and snowy. Until I get the scanner thing sorted out here are the pics I promised.
Foster on the canvas, notice they misspelled his last name as "Foxter"
An exchange in the middle rounds. Mina crouching and looking to punish Foster's body.

Another of the greatest triumphs of Mauro Mina was his K.O. victory over Goyo Peralta

This was a golden time for Peruvian boxing - when they had the money to bring over top class American and European opposition to packed houses in Lima. Those were the days indeed.

Is the film going to be out on DVD?

Excellent stuff!
Let's not forget that Mina also beat another fighter who was nobody's fool - Artie Towne.

Speaking of the Peralta fight, can anyone give a brief description of how the fight unfolded? Peralta is one of my favourite fighters and one of the toughest, iron chinned fighters I have seen, and I have often wondered how the heck Mina stopped the man, very impressive feat that was. I`ve got some footage of Mina as well that will be uploaded onto youtube soon, will bump this thread with the links once they are up.

On a sidenote, the actor Terrence Howard bears a striking resemblance to Artie Towne, its uncanny really.

I do color commentary for a Peruvian TV channel and they had these on a original master 3/4" tape. Sometime ago I shared these highlights at a known boxing torrent site.
