Really didn't think he would but it's not definite yet so...
He is also scheduled to appear on Irish chat show The Late Late Show tonight.

it is 2fm (irish radio station) that have been reporting it.
still nothing at all on the rte website which is funny since rte owns 2fm.
wont have long to wait until the press conference comes out.
bit surprising. thought it would be like ricky hatton where he would not have wanted to go out on a loss.

It will be a shame if he does retire.
If he put a few wins together he could get another crack at a World title.

rte news has confirmed it and they had a snippet of an interview with dunne.
dunne said he had achieved all of his dreams and ambitions.
there will be more about it later in the hour. it might be available to view the news on the rte website. sports news is normally between half six and 7.
ryan tubridy (host of the late late) has just been interviewed on 2fm about the late late tonight. said there will be a sports guest but did not say who. said someone had something to annonce. so it seems he will be on the late late.
that should be available to watch on the rte site as well.
heres a link to an article which includes quotes from dunne on the rte website. there is a small audio interview at the bottom as well

Dunne brought boxing back to the 'households' in Ireland and along with Brian Peters deserves a lot of credit for this. The fight against Cordoba will never be forgotten. Dissapointed to see him retire at 30 - thought he would have enough left in the tank for another crack but obviously he was the one doing the training camps and taking the hits in the head so he knows best. Wish him and his family all the best in his retirement.

My mother looks after his daughter, so when I say this I say this with honesty :-
He made a good life out of Boxing, got a lot of the rub of the green and made some great money out of lucrative sponsorship deals here that made him a household name - which will make him a few quid also in the future.
However, he was batting above his head and was not able to cope with any type of a decent fighter that had a good shot on em, every time I watched him at the 02 I always felt that he was on borrowed time.
He was lucky to win the belt.
Fair play to him though, not everyone can say they were champion of the world.
Brought a bit of joy to these parts

yeah, although he was very successful, he only really delivered once. vs cordoba, in that great fight. so he made a major contribution to a very exciting weight class, super bantamweight. i rate poonsawat very highly, higher than most on these boards, but the thai doesn't demolish anyone really good in 3 rds. that was a bad loss by dunne; not who he lost to, but HOW he lost. dunne is weak chinned, he has a lot of heart, and a wicked left hand. but he never ironed out that amateur mistake of holding his gloves up away from his head (like someone making fun of somebody with big ears). it leaves him so open, espeially when he backs up.
i knew he was done at 122. he looks like a skeleton at the weight. beautiful left hand boxer and one great world level win. i did wonder if he'd try his luck at 126. never felt that munroe had a chance of getting the fight, not when dunne was champ, and certainly not after dunne had lost his title by early KO.
right then, hopefully andrew murray has his career pushed forward a bit. a more technically sound fighter than dunne, for sure. but will he be able to capture the imagination, like dunne did, domestically?

Murray doesn't have the same charisma as Dunne. He's a bit quiet. There was always a great buzz about the Dunne fights. It's not the same with the other irish fighters, not even with Andy Lee home in Limerick city. Maybe it's just that Dunne was my favourite fighter.

Andy Murray is a gent but gettin chat outta him is like gettin blood outta a stone. It just doesnt come natural to him.

i think it doesn't help when the TV broadcasts show jim rock fights and other undercard fights, and show about 1 or 2 rounds out of 10, of murray's fights. i've had a few of the RTE broadcasts and this seems typical coverage for murray. how can anyone follow his career?

they showed his full fight against Fagan last weekend. You will probably be seeing a bit more of him now that Dunne is gone and the fact that he is moving towards a EBU shot.
edit: Jim Rock is retired nearly a year now

I think Dunne has made the right choice. He gave us a great fight with Cordoba. All the best, Bernard. Enjoy life!

least maloney can shut up about a munroe-dunne fight now.
surprised he's sacked it.
but he made a good wedge out of it.
he was always an accident waiting to happen at a decent level i thought.
but credit to him for winning that cordoba fight and surprising me big time.
didn't think he'd win a world title even with as many titles around as there are.
enjoy ya retirement bernard.

I was a Bernard Dunne supporter from before he turned pro so this is a very difficult thread for me to comment on as the journey has come to an end.
I'm not going to do a 1000 word analyis of his career, other can, and will do that. I just want to thank him for the roller-coaster ride he gave us, the great nights in America, the brilliant win over Pickering(when Esham was a real threat) the savage defeat to Martinez, the rebuild, the wonderful victory over Cordoba(when many on here were mocking his chances of victory) and finally the big defence that ended badly.
That is a career and a half, why risk his legacy by carrying on, getting older and losing more? Finish there, go and spend time with your family and let us remember the fighter that was Bernard Dunne, what a brilliant fighter he was!

course not.
but we all know he was a failure in america.
it started well.
then a slight raise in competition and he was struggling his way to pts decisions.
he done the sensible thing and went back to ireland.
still left america with his tail between his legs though.

he was quite popular in the States - managed by Sugar Ray Leonard and trained by Freddie Roach. When Leonards promotional outfit went pearshaped Peters seen a niche in the market for a popular Irish boxer and it was because of Dunnes reputation and Peters salesmanship that RTE decided to start broadcasting boxing regulary. He had offers in the States to stay over there.
On a different topic, a lot of people don't know that Dunnes career was nearly finished before it started because of a possible brain problem that was seen on a CAT Scan in the States after his debut. He even considered giving up the sport because of it but thankfully he was given the all clear.

What an arsehole!
Bernard wasnt a failure in the US, only for SRL folded and his missus wanted to go home then he would probably still be there. He was immensely popular in America.
However, I do know someone that was a failure in America.............
