sparking the prospect

always the promoters nightmare, and always generates a huge amount of ringside gasps amongst the knowledgeable gathered fans.....but occasionally, a prospect is cold clocked by a journeyman.

i know we have had numerous arguaments over the years as to what the role of the journeyman should or could be, personally i think its wrong for the likes of peter buckley to enter the ring with absolutely no intention of winning....but hey..thats for another day.

ive been ringside at a fair number of fights over the last 10 years or so, and also seen many many bills on tv, but, there is nothing like a prospect being put on his arse and/or counted out after being tagged by the supposed journeyman. utmost respect to these fellas, that turn up with little or no hope of winning, against the potential star...then they wipe the smile off the promoters face.

here are a few examples of what i mean. anyone remember anymore? im sure there are loads. what is the biggest shock you have seen? obviously the loss that vinny mitchell accumulated the other week is an example too.

mal rice tko2 v patrick halberg
mal rice tko1 v petr horacek
alvin miller ko1 v danny percival
tony booth tko4 v scott landsdown

David Kirk from my neck of the woods defeated a 13-0 Matthew Hatton.

He didn't spark him, but he trained for once and took the fight seriously.

'Kirky' has fought everyone - Witter, Webb, Saunders, Cox, Brook, Thirwall, Hatton, Theophane, Woolcombe, Amar, McIntrye, Barnes, Wright, Lynes, Jennings, Magee, Earl, Minter, etc etc.

I wouldn't call Booth a journeyman, as such. He did take tough fights, but he also fought and won on a regular basis, too. I think at one point he was the British profesisonal boxer who had won the most fights.

...

On another note, does it seem that British journeymen are being used less nowadays?

Maybe it's just because there isn't as much boxing on.

Not a British prospect - but Omar Sheika vs Tony Booth will be one I will always remember..... Sheika was hyped as the next tyson with Rooney in his corner.

I know we cannot consider Carl Thompson a journeyman (I don't want to bring up that recent thread again).... BUT - it was quite big news in Wales when he upset Nicky Piper. Nicky was receiving a fair amount of attention, and Carl was 9-3.

Are you obsessed with this guy losing? Has it made your pants a little more wet knowing that he picked up an award for prospect of 08-09 at the LEBA the weekend (as I'm sure you obviously know, hence the thread and your posts on the Vinny Mitchell thread). Interesting to see Jason Cook got KO'd in the 1st by Trevor Small....But Cook then went on to win the European title.

There was a heavyweight in the 1990s from Reading called Keith Fletcher and in his 12 or so fights upset the applecart a few times. he wasn't big for a heavyweight and always had a shaved head - I remember him beating some Scandinavian prospect but he caused quite a few upsets.

Today - Pavel Dogovs - the guy who beat David Hannah on points a few months ago - he is on a roll with upsetting the applecart! This is one Latvian who can fight - we probably won't see him again over here. :geek2:

Willie Bilan from Fife was a really good amateur and Tommy Gilmour had high hopes for him after signing him.
After winning his first couple of fights he was knocked spark out by Alex Spitko on the undercard of a Kevin Anderson fight.
Was a pretty sickening KO and Bilan has never really bounced back from it.

now you are getting on my tits, the thread is about journeymen who spark out a prospect, vinny is a prospect, he got stopped by someone who could be classed as a journeyman, i suggest you take off your mitchell tinted specs and come up with some more examples like others have done, peel down your vinny mitchell posters, throw your vinny mitchell coffee cup in the bin, and take your vinny mitchell watch to the menders, the second hand has come off !!

mark krence was 1999 ABA cruiserweight champion, the boxing butcher was about 6ft5 inches tall, a decent operator and steady technician and was 20-1 (points loss to audley harrison after shaking audley to his boots !!) when he came up against konstantin prizyuk, an easter european with a very mediocre record of 8-8-1. prizyuk weighed 2 stones less than krence and it was one of those 'formality' pieces of matchmaking........the result..

krence was counted out in the 6th round, i remember this being a big shock at the time.

Fearless Franny Jones lost KO1 Stuart Elwell.

jones was being lined up for the British at the time and Elwell, although 7 and 0, had not, and still has not scored a single stoppage win. Chief support to a Hunter European defence at the Winter Gardens.

it put jones plans back about 18 month culminating in a shot at Anderson's British crown following 5 wins (4 by KO) including a 5th round KO in Dublin over Neil Sinclair.

Elwell went on himself to get a shot at Kell Brooks British crown, which kind of makes Matthew Hatton's gripes of being "overlooked" look like a pile of old sh*t in my eyes.

he said that himself and its what happens when you go for a big shot early and leave yourself open. Plenty of non-punchers have scored upsets like this.

Darren Dyer, who remembers him?
He was a Commonwealth games gold medalist and touted for big things.
In his 2nd fight he was beat by Del Bryan , who of course went on to win various titles.
This was seen as a learning fight for Darren, then after a couple more routine wins he was matched with Kelvin Mortimer 6-7-1, the result was a 1st round KO for Mortimer.

Dyer did box on , and had some good wins. His rematch with Del Bryan was a cracker.
The one fight that i always find suprising is when Dyer was matched with Jorge Luis Maysonet, who if nothing else could punch as hard as anyone. Dyer lost in 2!
